A son of a man surnamed Lu from the Yuehu area in Ningbo. In summer, he followed a group of children into the river to fish. His Yongquan (Kidney 1) acupoint on the sole of the right foot was touched and bled profusely, with blood loss amounting to a dou (a traditional unit of volume). After a long time, from the knee to the dorsum of the foot, it felt as cold as ice, with spasms and tension in the tendons and vessels. That leg had become useless, requiring a cane for movement. His relatives and friends were my neighbors, so they consulted me for treatment. I said, "The leg has been disabled for over two years; how can it be cured?" However, upon careful consideration of the cause of onset, it was due to excessive blood loss leading to malnourishment of the tendons and vessels. This acupoint belongs to the Kidney Meridian, and was further invaded by Cold-Dampness. Therefore, I used Yanghe Decoction (Warming Yang and Resolving Toxins Decoction), removing Baijiezi (White Mustard Seed), and adding Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Root), Yiyiren (Coix Seed), Niuxi (Achyranthes Root), Mugua (Chaenomeles Fruit), and Danggui (Angelica Sinensis). I advised him to try this regimen. I instructed him to take it continuously for forty doses without changing the prescription. I did not dare to promise efficacy. However, after fifteen doses, his foot became warm; after thirty doses, the tendons relaxed, and his gait gradually returned to normal. Originally, Yanghe Decoction is a formula for treating Yin Abscesses (Yin Ju). Here, it was borrowed to unblock the meridians and nourish the blood, supplemented with herbs that relax tendons and expel dampness. The chronic ailment was suddenly cured. Matters in the world generally require reasoning based on principles and should not be treated with such rigidity.
Mr. He, in his thirties, suddenly suffered from heart pain, which sometimes led to syncope. He urgently summoned me for diagnosis. His lips and face were cyanotic. He held his chest tightly with his hands, unable to speak due to severe pain. The pulse at the left Guan and Chi positions was tight; the Cun position felt like touching a blade (indicating a wiry and tense pulse). The right hand could not be palpated due to his pressing on his chest. I said, "This is Zhenxin Tong (True Heart Pain). If it occurs in the morning, death comes in the evening; if in the evening, death comes in the morning. Even if Lu Dan and Bian Que were reborn, they could not save him." Shortly thereafter, he indeed passed away.
Prior to this, Mr. Zhao Zhong suffered from intermittent twitching and pulling sensations along the meridians of his left cheek and around the ears. I cured him, and he remained well for three years, with only occasional minor recurrences that responded well to regulation. In the winter of the Jichou year, his pulse at both Chi positions was wiry, slippery, and hollow (Kou). He had frequent urination, painful and difficult urination through the urethra, and insomnia at night. I said, "This is caused by Hyperactive Yang in old age. The gentleman has a strong constitution and is over eighty years old, lacking wives or concubines, leading to frequent stirring of Ministerial Fire, resulting in dribbling urine. As stated in the Neijing: 'Endless thoughts, unfulfilled desires, and mental wandering outside' lead to spontaneous seminal emission (Baiyin). Therefore, I used sweet-cool yin-nourishing medicines, assisted by Zhi Mu (Anemarrhena Rhizome), Huang Bo (Phellodendron Bark), and Che Qian Zi (Plantago Seed) to drain Kidney Fire. After several doses, he gradually stabilized. Now he says it happened again in January. I frankly explained the cause to him, saying, 'This condition cannot be cured by medicine alone. When the fire stirs, you must silently recite the Six Healing Sounds (Liu Zi Jue) to restrain it. This is the supreme medicine.' The old gentleman laughed loudly but did not answer, and the illness subsequently healed itself.
This is treating a heart-related disease with a heart-related remedy. Advanced age with abundant fortune and overflowing vital energy; witty remarks bring joy. (Commented by Songqiao)
