Scallion white is mashed into a paste, spread on a silk sleeve, warmed, and applied to the anterior fontanelle before bedtime.
Rehmanniae Radix Preparata (Shengdi), Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin), Gardeniae Fructus (Zhizi Ren), Paeoniae Radix Rubra (Chishao), Curcumae Radix (Yujin), with Imperatae Rhizoma (Maohua) as a guide. Decoct in water, add fresh juice of Plantaginis Herba (Cheqiancao), and take slowly.
Gardeniae Fructus (Zhizi Ren) and disordered hair (burnt to ash) are ground into powder together and insufflated into the nose.
Ancestral prescription for epistaxis: Use Shenxiong Wan, taken with Maohua decoction.
Xi Jiang Yue (Poem):
If a child has nasal congestion, wind-cold has its own root causes; wind-strike results in long-flowing clear rhinorrhea, while dry cold-heat involves convulsions. Clear rhinorrhea should be dispersed with Schizonepetae Spica (Jingjie) and Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng); dry heat-fire requires internal treatment, using Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin), Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian), Gardeniae Fructus (Zhizi), and Phellodendri Cortex (Huangbai) together, guided by Scallion and Ginger to restore balance.
Sudden epistaxis is caused by accumulated heat in the five zang organs; blood overflows into the nose following qi ascent. Treatment focuses primarily on cooling the blood. Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui), Paeoniae Radix Rubra (Chishao), Rehmanniae Radix Preparata (Shengdi), Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin), unprepared Gardeniae Fructus (Sheng Zhizi), Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao), Moutan Cortex (Mudanpi), Platycladi Cacumen (Baiye), and Imperatae Rhizoma (Maogen) are decocted and taken.
The mouth is the orifice of the Spleen, and the lips correspond to the Spleen internally.
Pediatric thrush (E Kou): White debris fills the tongue surface inside the mouth, resembling a goose's beak. This is fetal heat, most severe in the Heart and Spleen, manifesting heavily in the mouth. Internally administer Liangjing Wan (Cool the Agitation Pill). Externally, use saliva from the goose's mouth; wrap a clean finger in silk, insufflate Baoming San (Life-Preserving Powder) into the mouth. This is also called kou chuang (mouth sore).
Kou chuang (Mouth sore): Red sores cover the entire mouth. This is due to thick congenital constitution and overly warm nurturing, causing accumulated heat in the Heart and Spleen to steaming upward, forming mouth sores. Internally administer Liangjing Wan. Apply water from grinding Di Ji [37] (a specific herb/preparation) to coat all sores, and apply Yilian San (One-Chain Powder) externally.
For the above two conditions, if Liangjing Wan is ineffective, Xixin San (Wash the Heart Powder) is miraculous.
Kou mi (Oral candidiasis/mucosal erosion): Sores and ulcers cover the entire mouth. This is heat transferring from the Bladder to the Small Intestine, with obstruction in the diaphragm and intestines, manifesting upward as oral erosion. Use Daochi San (Guide Out Red Powder) to clear Small Intestine heat, and Wuling San (Five-Ingredient Powder with Poria) to clear Bladder heat. The main formula is Daochi San combined with Wuling San.
If kou chuang does not respond to cooling medicines, it indicates deficiency of Liver and Spleen qi, with floating deficient fire uncontrolled. Treat with Lizhong Tang (Regulate the Middle Decoction). Externally insufflate Guigui Mo (Cinnamon Bark Powder).
After vomiting and diarrhea, if mouth sores appear, it is also due to deficient fire. Lizhong Tang is the primary treatment.
When a child has swelling on the upper palate resembling a hanging abscess, this is named zhong e (heavy palate). It is formed by spleen and stomach carrying heat, where qi and blood fail to converge. Prick to remove bad blood, internally administer Liange San (Cool the Diaphragm Powder), and externally insufflate Bixue San (Green Snow Powder). For mild cases, administer Liangjing Wan.
When a child drools from both cheeks, eroding onto the chest, this is named zhi yi (stagnant chin). Saliva is the fluid of the Spleen, and the mouth is the orifice of the Spleen. Due to spleen and stomach deficiency-cold failing to consolidate fluids, saliva exits the mouth and erodes the cheeks. Wenpi Dan (Warm the Spleen Pill) is indicated.
Frequent puckering of the mouth in children indicates disharmony of qi. The lips correspond to the Spleen, and qi is generated by the Lung. Spleen deficiency fails to nourish the Lung (the child element). Therefore, tonify the Mother (Spleen) to harmonize qi; Yigong San (Extraordinary Merit Powder) is used.
Puckering of the mouth, blue complexion, and excessive crying in children indicate pain below the umbilicus. Lizhong Tang is the primary treatment.
Newborns with umbilical wind causing mouth puckering and abdominal swelling are difficult to cure.
Children urgently wanting milk but unable to suckle have heat in the Heart and Spleen. Xiehuang San (Drain the Yellow Powder) treats this.
