The head and neck area of infants should remain cool throughout the four seasons. Whenever head heat is observed, it indicates the presence of pathogenic factors; Bao Long Wan (Dragon Embracing Pill) can be administered prophylactically.
If an infant's fontanelle is swollen with exposed blue veins, this is due to heat in the umbilical region; Xie Qing Wan (Drain the Green Pill) is the primary formula. If the fontanelle is merely swollen without vein exposure, it is caused by internal heat causing Qi to rush upward, resulting in swelling. The treatment should focus on clearing heat and dispersing wind; Xie Qing Wan or Bao Long Wan are indicated.
If an infant who was previously healthy suddenly exhibits a soft neck, this is due to liver heat generating wind; Xie Qing Wan is the primary formula.
A sunken fontanelle results from prolonged illness leading to deficiency of the Zang-Fu organs; the Qi fails to ascend, causing the fontanelle to sink like a pit. Shen Ling Bai Zhu Wan (Ginseng, Poria, and Atractylodes Macrocephala Powder) is indicated. If the condition has progressed to malnutrition (Gan syndrome), Ji Sheng Wan (Collected Sage Pill) is indicated.
An open fontanelle that fails to close indicates a deficiency of Kidney Qi, a condition known as "Jie Chu" (Splitting Skull), which is a severe disease. Internal administration of Di Huang Wan (Rehmannia Pill) is recommended, along with external application of the Fontanel Sealing Method.
After prolonged illness, if the neck becomes soft, it signifies the collapse of the Tian Zhu Bone (the cervical spine supporting the head), which is a critical condition. Massive tonification of Qi and Blood is required; Ba Wu Tang (Eight Substance Decoction) is indicated, taken with powder of Jiang Can (Stewed Silkworm).
If an infant exhibits a soft neck immediately after birth, it is due to insufficient fetal Qi; Di Huang Wan is indicated.
(Procedure for Fontanel Sealing Method): Process Da Nan Xing Zheng (Large Star Arisaema Rhizome) by roasting until charred, grind into powder, mix with rice vinegar, apply onto silk fabric, warm it, and paste it over the fontanelle. Continue until the fontanelle closes.
The black part of the eye belongs to the Liver; the white part belongs to the Lung; the pupil belongs to the Kidney; the two corners belong to the Heart; and the eyelids belong to the Spleen.
Redness inside the eyes is caused by accumulated heat in the Heart Meridian attacking upwards; Dao Chi San (Guide Out the Red Powder) added with Huang Lian (Coptis Rhizome) and Fang Feng (Saposhnikovia Root) is indicated (see Jing Men for the formula).
For treating infantile red eyes using ancestral methods, Liang Jing Wan (Cool the Agitation Pill) is administered with decoction of Ju Hua (Chrysanthemum Flower).
Yellowish discoloration inside the eyes indicates Spleen heat; Xie Huang San (Drain the Yellow Powder) is indicated. Swollen eyelids are treated similarly.
Frequent blinking of the eyes [34] indicates wind in the Liver. Any disease, whether new or chronic, can draw out Liver wind. Since the eyes belong to the Liver, when wind enters the eyes, the sensation is like wind blowing from all directions, which the infant cannot tolerate, hence the blinking. Xie Qing Wan is indicated (see Jing Feng Men for the formula).
Fixed gaze (staring straight ahead) indicates heat in the Liver. Heat entering the eyes obstructs the sinews and vessels, binding the two corners of the eyes and preventing rotation, resulting in fixed gaze. Xie Qing Wan is indicated for both conditions.
When an infant is born with closed eyes, it is due to fetal heat. Internal administration of Sheng Di Huang Tang (Fresh Rehmannia Decoction) is recommended. Externally, Dan Cao (Gentian Root) decoction should be used to wash the eyes seven times a day; delay may damage the eyes.
Redness and ulceration of the eyelids shortly after birth occur because the infant was not cleaned thoroughly during delivery, allowing filth to stain the corners of the eyes. This leads to persistent redness and ulceration of the eyelids. Zhen Jin San (True Gold Powder) is indicated.
In cases of prolonged coughing in infants, if the eye sockets appear purple-black as if injured, and the sclera is red like blood, this is called "Xue Yan" (Blood Eye). Yu Ye Wan (Jade Fluid Pill) is administered internally, combined with external patching therapy.
If an infant loses vision after some time since birth, it is called "Que Mu" (Sparrow Eye/Night Blindness), caused by Liver deficiency. Di Huang Wan is used for treatment, taken together with pig or sheep liver.
After smallpox or chickenpox, if a membrane forms in the eye, Gu Jing San (Grain Essence Powder) is indicated.
In infants suffering from febrile diseases, if the eyes are photophobic and prefer darkness, this is due to Wind-Heat. The treatment should resolve wind and clear heat; Qing Yang San Huo Tang (Clear Yang Disperse Fire Decoction) is indicated.
After vomiting and diarrhea, if there is a white membrane in the eyes causing them to remain closed, and the eyes lack luster or spirit, the condition is difficult to treat.
