Xijiang Yue (Poem):
When children fall ill, fever arises; one must know the root cause. External contraction of Wind-Cold causes tidal heat; internal injury from diet causes irritability. Vomiting, diarrhea, malaria, dysentery, sores, and scabies; Bian Zheng (metamorphic eruption) and smallpox resemble burning; bone-steaming and body heat gradually become consumption; all treatments must be distinguished clearly.
If it is external contraction of Wind-Cold, with red face and aversion to wind and cold, Xing Xing San (Awakening Powder) is excellent; if cough is present, Can Su Yin (Ginseng and Perilla Decoction) shows efficacy. Internal injury from diet can be purged; add San Huang (Three Yellows) formulas for Spleen accumulation; add Ji Sheng Wan (Collection-Sage Pill) for peace; do not let Spleen deficiency become difficult to reverse.
For vomiting and diarrhea, Wei Ling Wan is best; for red-and-white dysentery, use Xiang Lian Wan (Costus and Coptis Pill); for malaria patients, resolve pathogenic factors first before calming malaria (*Note 9*); for sores and scabies, use Hu Ma Wan (Sesame Pill) powder. Bian Zheng is a common condition in children; do not recklessly use decoctions or pills. If encountering smallpox, consult a specialist; Ji Sheng Wan (Collection-Sage Pill) specifically treats Gan Ji (accumulation due to malnutrition) and soft bones.
When treating heat, Do not mistake sweating and purging methods; mistaken sweating or purging harms the body. If sweating should have been used but purging was applied, fullness and obstruction invade; if purging should have been used but sweating was applied, convulsions may settle. This is only because the exterior-interior differentiation was unclear, causing early death of the child. The condition is indeed hard to grasp; proceed cautiously, using Wei Ling Wan (Stomach-Calm Pill) and Ji Sheng Wan (Collection-Sage Pill).
