The ear orifice belongs to the Kidney channel, and the area anterior to the auricle (pinna) belongs to the Shaoyang channel. There are five types of ear diseases, all caused by excess Qi in the Kidney channel with hot Qi rushing upward to the ear, causing body fluids to stagnate and transform into pus or clear fluid. There are also cases of deafness caused by water entering the ear during bathing. Internally administer Manjingzi San (Vitex Fruit Powder), and externally apply Longgu San (Dragon Bone Powder).
For sores appearing before and after the auricle that exude and fail to heal, Huangyao San (Yellow Herb Powder) is the primary treatment.
Redness and swelling beside the ear indicate heat toxicity. If not treated urgently, it will inevitably develop into a large carbuncle. Externally apply Fudu San (Toxin-Dispelling Powder), and internally administer Xiaodu Yin (Detoxifying Decoction).
Sudden deafness is caused by Qi blockage; Tongqiao Wan (Orifice-Unblocking Pill) is the primary treatment.
If insects enter the ear, pour in clarified oil to expel them. Additionally, rub two knives together near the ears; the sound of grinding will cause the insects to exit.
Roast snake slough until blackened but retaining its properties, grind into powder, and insufflate into the ear for excellent efficacy.
Man Jing Zi (Vitex Fruit), Gan Cao (Licorice Root), Gan Ge Hua (Kudzu Flower), Sheng Ma (Cimicifuga Rhizome), Chi Shao (Red Peony Root), Qian Hu (Peucedanum Root), Sang Bai Pi (Mulberry Root Bark, stir-fried), Mu Tong (Akebia Caulis), Mai Dong (Ophiopogon Tuber), Sheng Di Huang (Rehmannia Root), Chi Fu Ling (Poria with Red Heart), with Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger) and Da Zao (Jujube) as guides, decoct in water and take orally.
Long Gu (Fossilized Bones), Bai Ku Fan (White Alum) each 3 qian, She Xiang (Musk) a small amount, Huang Dan (Lead Tetroxide, calcined) 2 qian, Yan Zhi (Vermilion/Carmine) 1 qian, grind together into fine powder. First wipe dry the pus with cotton, then use a bamboo tube to insufflate the medicine into the ear.
Huang Bo (Phellodendron Bark), Bai Ku Fan (White Alum), Hai Piao Xiao (Cuttlefish Bone), Hua Shi (Talcum), Long Gu (Fossilized Bones), in equal parts, grind into powder. For moist conditions, apply dry powder externally; for dry conditions, mix with pig bile and apply externally.
Use Lv Dou Fen (Mung Bean Powder), quantity unrestricted, or grind beans into fine powder, mix with light vinegar, and apply to the swollen area. Change when dry.
Qiang Huo (Notopterygium Rhizome), Fang Feng (Saposhnikovia Root), Huang Qin (Scutellaria Root), Lian Qiao (Forsythia Fruit, remove heart and grid), Jie Geng (Platycodon Root), Gan Cao (Licorice Root), Ren Shen (Ginseng Root), Chuan Xiong (Ligusticum Rhizome), Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis Root), Chai Hu (Bupleurum Root), decoct in water and take orally.
Grind Ci Shi (Magnetite) 1 qian into powder, mix with She Xiang (Musk) 5 li, grind together to form pills the size of a date pit. Wrap in cotton and insert into the ear. Also, take a piece of rusted iron, soak in hot wine, and hold in the mouth; within a moment, Qi will become unblocked.
Xijiang Yue poem states: Commonly, water flows from the ear, drying and hardening over time making it difficult to clear. Although bi er ting (ear discharge) is not ominous, one must fear the formation of pus which causes pain. Treatment focuses on dispersing Shaoyang wind-heat and attacking Kidney damp-heat. Hong Mian Shan Xue (Red Cotton Eel Blood - *Note: likely a poetic/metaphorical term for a specific herbal remedy or symptom description in this context*) can eliminate pus; the formula selection is clear.
