Malaria is caused by the accumulation of phlegm-turbidity above the diaphragm. Wan Yi Wan (see General Treatment for formula).
Yuan Hua San: Treats pediatric malaria.
Powder the root of *Genkwa Flos* (Daphne Genkwa), use 1-2 fen per dose, and 3 fen for a three-year-old child. Take one egg, remove the top, insert the powder, mix well, seal the opening with paper, wrap externally with wet paper, and roast in ash fire until cooked. Chew and swallow.
Tian Ling San: Burn the calvaria (*Calvaria Humana*) to retain its properties, grind into fine powder. Take 5 qia per dose, mixed with yellow wine, which stops malaria immediately.
Xiao Pi Wan: Treats malaria mass (*Mai Mu*), fluid retention forming masses, and hard pain in the abdomen and hypochondrium.
Ingredients: *Genkwa Flos* (roasted), Cinnabar (equal parts).
Grind the above ingredients into fine powder, make pills with refined honey, size like small beans. Take 10 pills per dose, delivered with jujube decoction.
Zhu You Ke Method: Treats persistent malaria. The incantation states: "I come from the East, met a pool of water on the way, a dragon in the water has nine heads and eighteen tails. I asked what it eats, it only eats the malaria ghost." Recite the incantation once, blow onto a fruit, recite seven times and apply. Have the patient stand facing east at dawn before chickens and dogs make noise, eat the fruit, then sleep peacefully in a quiet room. Avoid fruits, vegetables, meat, and hot-natured foods. This method is effective in 80-90% of cases and can save lives where medicine is unavailable. "Fruit" refers to peaches, apricots, jujubes, chestnuts, etc.
A child previously suffered abdominal pain due to food stagnation and took harsh purgatives, later developing malaria that manifested every late afternoon. I diagnosed this as sinking of Yuan Qi. I proposed treating with Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang. The family did not believe me and indiscriminately used heat-clearing and digestion-promoting agents, worsening the previous symptoms, leading to poor appetite and diarrhea. I prescribed Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang in the morning and Yi Gong San added with Dang Gui in the evening. The child recovered after more than a month.
Another child experienced chills followed by fever every noon before midday, resolving shortly after. Use Liu Jun Zi Tang added with Pao Jiang, made into pills the size of Euryale Seed (*Qian Shi*). Take one pill per dose. The condition stabilized after ten days or so. (See Supplemental Tonification for formula.)
Cough is caused by wind pathogen invading the Lung.
Shen Su Yin: Treats pediatric colds in all seasons, fever and headache, cough with wheezing and urgency, copious phlegm-saliva, nasal congestion with heavy voice, thick sticky sputum, as well as internal injury combined with external contraction causing all types of fever and wheezing cough.
Ingredients: Perilla Leaf (*Zi Su Ye*), Tangerine Peel (*Chen Pi*), Peucedanum Root (*Qian Hu*), Platycodon Root (*Jie Geng*), Pinellia Tuber (*Ban Xia*, stir-fried with ginger juice), Poria (*Bai Fu Ling*, peeled), Kudzu Root (*Gan Ge*), Bitter Orange (*Zhi Ke*, bran-fried) [all equal parts], Licorice Root (*Gan Cao*), Ginseng Root (*Ren Shen*) [use half amount of the above two], Aromatic Pennywort Rhizome (*Mu Xiang*) [a little].
Cut the above herbs, add three slices of fresh ginger, decoct in water, take after meals. If there is excess in the Lung with pathogenic factors, remove Ren Shen, add Scutellaria Root (*Huang Qin*), Mulberry Root Bark (*Sang Bai Pi*), and Apricot Seed (*Xing Ren*).
Shen Hua San: Treats cough with fever, wheezing, and hemoptysis.
Ingredients: Ginseng Root (*Ren Shen*), Trichosanthes Root (*Tian Hua Fen*) [equal parts].
Grind into powder, take 5 fen per dose, mixed with honey water.
Honey Pear Lozenge: Treats cough with wheezing and urgency.
Take one sweet pear, cut carefully without severing completely, fill with honey inside, wrap in dough, roast in ash fire until cooked. Remove the dough wrapper and eat the pear to cure.
Another Method: Treats pediatric phlegm obstruction in the throat with wheezing and urgency. Take one seed of Croton Fruit (*Ba Dou*), remove shell, pound into paste, form one pill, wrap in cotton, insert into the left nostril for males and right nostril for females. Phlegm will drain down and the condition will resolve.
Another Method: Treats tidal fever and phlegm-cough due to Cold Damage (applicable to males, females, and children).
Ingredients: Turmeric Tuber (*Yu Jin*) [3 qian], Gypsum Fibrosum (*Shi Gao*) [1 liang, sifted].
Grind together into powder, take 2-3 spoons per dose, delivered with clear tea.
A child contracted wind-cold, presenting with cough and fever. After taking exterior-releasing agents, wheezing and sweating worsened. I diagnosed deficiency of Spleen and Lung Qi and intended to tonify with Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang added with Schisandra Berry (*Wu Wei Zi*). The family did not believe me and self-administered Er Chen Tang, Mulberry Root Bark (*Sang Bai Pi*), and Bitter Orange (*Zhi Ke*), resulting in convulsions and phlegm obstruction. Finally, using the previous prescription added with Uncaria Hook (*Gou Teng*), the child recovered.
