Pulse: The pulse of plague (Wen Bing, epidemic febrile diseases) has no fixed name; it varies according to the meridians involved. If the pulse is forceful before sweating, or if it is deficient and slow, life will be endangered. When everyone suffers from similar symptoms, it is Tian Xing Shi Yi (seasonal epidemic infectious disease).
Bixie Dan (Evil-Expelling Pill): Tiger skull bone (2 liang), Cinnabar (Zhusha), Realgar (Xionghuang), Orpiment (Cihuang), Aristolochia debilis (Guijiu), Elaeagnus multiflora seed (Wuyi), Aralia cordata branch (Guijian), Veratrum nigrum root (Lilu) (each 1 liang).
Grind the above into powder, mix with refined honey to make pills the size of a bullet. Place one pill in a pouch, tie it on the back—left side for men, right side for women. Alternatively, for those prone to illness, burn it indoors; all evil spirits and pathogens will dare not enter.
Also treats women having sexual intercourse with ghosts/spirits.
Wuwen Dan (Five Plagues Pill): Treats seasonal epidemics, Shanghan fever, and various malaria fevers.
Scutellaria baicalensis root (Huangqin, associated with Fire, becomes the Sovereign herb in Wu-Gui years), Phellodendron bark (Huangbai, associated with Water, becomes the Sovereign herb in Bing-Xin years), Scutellaria baicalensis root (Huangqin, associated with Metal, becomes the Sovereign herb in Yi-Geng years), Licorice root (Gancao, associated with Earth, becomes the Sovereign herb in Jia-Ji years), Perilla leaf (Zisu), Cyperus rotundus rhizome (Xiangfu) (above each 1 liang; double the amount by 1 liang for the Sovereign herb corresponding to the current year).
All seven ingredients are used raw. Process them into powder on the Winter Solstice. Decoct 3 liang of Polygonum multiflorum stem (Jinwen Dahuang) in thick water, remove dregs, and boil down to a paste. Mix with the herbal powder to form pills the size of a bullet. Coat with Cinnabar and Realgar powder, then apply gold foil. Take one pill per dose, ground in cold water and swallowed. It is extremely effective.
Puji Xiaodu San (Great Benefit Detoxification Powder): Treats Da Tou Wen (Big Head Plague).
Scutellaria baicalensis root (Huangqin, 2 liang), Scutellaria baicalensis root fried with wine (Huangqin, 2 liang), Tangerine peel (Chenpi), Polygala root (Xuanshen), Raw Licorice root (Sheng Gancao), Szechuan lovage rhizome (Chuanxiong), Burdock fruit (Shuniuzi), White silkworm (Bai Jiangcan), Cimicifuga rhizome (Shengma), Bupleurum root (Chaihu), Kudzu root (Gegen), Mint (Bohe), Angelica sinensis root (Danggui), Rhubarb (Dahuang), Ginseng (Renshen, 3 qian), Forsythia fruit (Lianqiao) (each 5 qian), Isatis root (Dalan Gen) (if unavailable, use Indigofera tinctoria leaf/Dianhua).
Grind all into fine powder, mix with refined honey to make pills weighing 2 qian each. Take one pill per dose, chew thoroughly, and swallow with plain cooked water to induce sweating. If pills are unavailable, take 1.2 qian of powder and administer as above. If not cured, take another dose. The goal is sweating; avoid exposure to wind. If swelling recurs due to wind exposure, take medicine again; healing occurs when the outer skin layer peels off. Avoid sour, cold foods, and lamb, chicken, fish. Also avoid sexual intercourse.
If winter should be cold but is instead warm, plague will erupt in spring; treat with Renshen Baidu San (Ginseng Rescue the Damaged Powder).
Ersheng Jiuku Wan (Two Sages Saving Pain Pills): Treats Shanghan and plague; usable regardless of whether the disease has transmitted through meridians.
Polygonum multiflorum stem (Jinwen Dahuang, 4 liang, mixed with wine, steamed, dried), Ziziphus jujuba seed pod (Yazao, 2 liang, preferably pig-tooth shaped).
Grind both into powder, mix with water to form a thin paste, and make pills the size of mung beans. Take 50-70 pills per dose, swallow with cold mung bean soup. The goal is sweating.
Renshen Baidu San (Ginseng Rescue the Damaged Powder): Universally treats seasonal plagues.
Notopterygium rhizome (Qianghuo), Angelica pubescens root (Duhuo), Peucedanum root (Qianhu), Bupleurum root (Chaihu), Szechuan lovage rhizome (Chuanxiong), Aurantium fruit (Zhike, pith removed), Platycodon root (Jiegeng, radix removed), Poria (Fuling), Ginseng (Renshen) (all equal parts), Licorice root (Gancao, half dose).
Cut into pieces. Take 1 liang per dose, add 3 slices of ginger and 1.5 cups of water, decoct until 0.8 cup remains, and take warm. Alternatively, grind into powder and take with boiling water. This medicine treats Shanghan plague, Fengwen (wind-warmth), Fengxuan (wind-dizziness), limb pain, aversion to cold with high fever, stiff neck, and painful eyes. It can be taken by both elderly and children. It is indispensable in Lingnan smog-miasma regions, during plague outbreaks, for people with much wind-phlegm, or those living in damp lowlands suffering from Hong Kong foot (gout/paralysis). Take continuously for 3-5 doses until symptoms cease. One variation adds a small amount of Mint.
If spring should be warm but is instead cool, dryness stagnation will erupt in summer; treat with Da Chaihu Tang (Major Bupleurum Decoction). (Formula see Shanghan.)
If summer should be hot but is instead cold, cold stagnation will erupt in autumn; treat with Wuji San (Five Accumulations Powder). (Formula see Zhonghan.)
If autumn should be cool but is instead rainy, dampness stagnation will erupt in winter; treat with Wuling San (Five-Ling Powder). (Formula see Zhongshu.)
Da Tou Bing (Big Head Disease) is caused by damp-heat located at the highest peak (head).
Niubang Qinlian Tang (Burdock Scutellaria Coptis Decoction): Treats accumulated heat in the upper body, causing swelling of the top of the head, face, or rising from behind the ears. Commonly known as Da Tou Wen (Big Head Plague); also treats smog-miasma.
Scutellaria baicalensis root fried with wine (Huangqin, 2.5 qian), Coptis chinensis rhizome fried with wine (Huanglian, 1.5 qian), Platycodon root (Jiegeng, 1.5 qian), Forsythia fruit (Lianqiao), Burdock fruit (Niubangzi, separately ground), Polygala root (Xuanshen) (each 1 qian), Rhubarb (Dahuang), Schizonepeta spike (Jingjie), Saposhnikovia root (Fangfeng), Notopterygium rhizome (Qianghuo) (each 3 fen), Gypsum (Shigao, 1.5 qian), Licorice root (Gancao, 1 qian).
Cut one dose, add one slice of ginger, decoct in water. Sip warm liquid slowly after meals. Divide one cup into 20 doses. Keep the medicinal effect in the upper body; do not let food follow immediately.
Neifu Xianfang (Internal Palace Immortal Formula): Treats swollen neck Big Head Disease and Hamawen (Toad Plague).
White silkworm (Jiangcan, 2 liang), Turmeric rhizome (Jianghuang, 2.5 qian), Cicada slough (Chantui, 2.5 qian), Rhubarb (Dahuang, 4 liang).
Grind all into fine powder, mix with ginger juice to form a paste, and make pills weighing 1 qian each. Adults take one pill, children take half a pill, mixed with honey water. Cure is immediate.
Another Formula: Treats Big Head Plague with swelling of the face, neck, and nape.
Use 3 qian of Fujian Indigofera tinctoria leaf (Dianhua), one cup of distilled liquor (Baijiu), and one egg white. Mix well and drink. Cured shortly thereafter; swelling subsides. This is a divine formula.
Hamawen (Toad Plague) belongs to Wind-Heat; treat with Fangfeng Tongsheng San (Saposhnikovia Unblocking Supreme Powder). (Formula see Fengzhong.)
When entering a patient's home, one must avoid their pathogenic qi to prevent infection. This is a benefit physicians must know. Apply Realgar powder inside the nostrils, or sesame oil, which is also excellent. Then enter the home calmly. For male patients, foul qi exits from the mouth; for female patients, from the vagina. When sitting or standing opposite, identify the direction. Since the qi comes from a specific source, insert a paper strip deep into the nose to induce sneezing, which is ideal.
Taicanggong Bixie Dan (Grand Master Tai Gong's Evil-Expelling Pill): In palaces or houses long unoccupied, accumulated dampness easily invades humans. Prepare this in advance and burn it to avoid harm. It is especially suitable to burn during summer months to dispel plague and scatter pathogenic qi.
Atractylodes lancea rhizome (Maozhu, 1 jin), Curcuma phaeocaulis rhizome (Taiwu), Coptis chinensis rhizome (Huanglian), Atractylodes macrocephala rhizome (Baizhu) (each 0.5 jin), Notopterygium rhizome (Qianghuo, 0.5 jin), Szechuan lovage rhizome (Chuanxiong), Aconitum carmichaelii lateral root (Caowu), Asarum root (Xixin), Lithospermum root (Zicao), Saposhnikovia root (Fangfeng), Angelica pubescens root (Duhuo), Ligusticum wallichii rhizome (Ben), Angelica dahurica root (Baizhi), Cyperus rotundus rhizome (Xiangfu), Angelica sinensis root (Danggui), Schizonepeta spike (Jingjie), Gastrodia elata tuber (Tianma), Cinnamon twig (Guangui), Nardostachys root (Gansong), Kaempferia galanga rhizome (Sansha), Dried ginger (Ganjiang), Ephedra stem (Mahuang), Ziziphus jujuba seed pod (Yazao), Peony root (Shaoyao), Licorice root (Gancao) (each 4 liang), Musk (Shexiang, 3 fen).
Grind all into powder, mix with date flesh to make pills the size of bullets. Burn one pill per use.
In the spring of Bingxu year of the Wanli era, I resided in Daliang where plague erupted severely. Scholars and commoners died frequently, spreading through neighborhoods, even wiping out families. Symptoms included headache, body pain, aversion to cold with high fever, red and swollen head/face/neck, sore throat, and confusion. This occurred because winter should have been cold but was hot; people contracted abnormal qi, which erupted as plague in spring and heat disease in summer. Named Da Tou Wen (Big Head Plague), it is a severe heat syndrome. I released a secret formula named Ersheng Jiuku Wan. Yazao opens orifices and releases the exterior; Dahuang purges fire and unblocks the interior. One dose induces sweating; one sweat brings cure. Truly an immortal formula. Day and night, doors were blocked and streets filled; I had no time for social calls. Countless lives were saved. Those with strong constitutions responded perfectly; for the weak, I first used Renshen Baidu San. Mild cases cured immediately; if not, Niubang Qinlian Tang achieved full recovery.
