Pulse: For leukorrhea (vaginal discharge) and Bengzhong (sudden heavy uterine bleeding), the pulse is often floating and weak; a deficiency and slow pulse indicates a favorable prognosis, while a full and rapid pulse indicates severe illness.
Benglou (uterine bleeding that is either sudden and heavy or prolonged and scanty) differs according to whether it is recent or chronic, and whether it is excess or deficiency. If it begins with damp-heat, detoxification and heat-clearing are appropriate. Use Coptis Rhizome (Huanglian), Scutellaria Root (Huangqin), Phellodendron Bark (Huangbai), Rehmannia Root (Shengdihuang), and Polygonum Multiflorum Stem (Puhuang). The above herbs are coarsely crushed for one dose, decocted in water, and taken on an empty stomach.
Treatment for uterine bleeding in women. Women over forty who experience excessive grief may suffer from chest oppression and urgency, scorched and elevated lung lobes, obstruction of the Upper Jiao, and heat qi stagnating in the middle. Consequently, blood flows recklessly causing bleeding, yellowish complexion, and emaciation. It is crucial not to administer drying and heating medicines. Since heat in the blood causes reckless flow, initially treat with Huanglian Jiedu Tang (Coptis Decoction for Detoxification), followed by Liangge San (Cool the Chest Powder) combined with Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) for regulation, which yields effective results.
If the condition persists and belongs to deficiency-heat, nourishing blood and clearing fire is appropriate.
Wenqing San (Warm-Clearing Powder): Treats continuous menstrual flow in women, or flow resembling bean curd dregs, mixed with five colors, sallow complexion, stabbing pain in the umbilical and abdominal regions, alternating chills and fever, and persistent benglou.
Ingredients: Angelica Sinensis Radix (Danggui), Paeonia Lactiflora Radix Alba (Baishao), Prepared Rehmannia Root (Shudihuang), Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome (Chuanxiong), Coptis Rhizome (Huanglian), Scutellaria Root (Huangqin), Phellodendron Bark (Huangbai), Gardenia Fruit (Zhizi) (each 1.5 qian).
The above herbs are coarsely crushed for one dose, decocted in water, and taken on an empty stomach.
If the condition has persisted for a long time and belongs to deficiency-cold, warming and tonifying is appropriate.
Yimu Tang (Motherwort Decoction): Treats uterine bleeding in women.
Ingredients: Angelica Sinensis Radix (Danggui), Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome (Chuanxiong), Paeonia Lactiflora Radix Alba (Baishao) (stir-fried with wine), Prepared Rehmannia Root (Shudihuang) (stir-fried with ginger juice), Scutellaria Root (Tiaohuang), Tangerine Peel (Chenpi), Cyperus Rhizome (Xiangfu) (steeped in vinegar), Donkey-hide Gelatin (Ejiao) (stir-fried with clam powder) (each 1 qian); Motherwort Herb (Yimucao), Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome (Baizhu) (deprived of rhizome) (each 1.5 qian); Scrophularia Root (Xuanshen), Polygonum Multiflorum Stem (Puhuang) (stir-fried) (each 0.8 qian); Licorice Root (Gancao) (0.4 qian).
The above herbs are coarsely crushed for one dose, decocted in water, and taken on an empty stomach.
Wuhui San (Five Ashes Powder): Treats unceasing bleeding progressing to uterine hemorrhage.
Ingredients: Lotus Pod Shell, Yellow Silk, Human Hair (Xueyu), Carbonized Grass Dust (Baicaoshuang), Palm Fiber.
Each ingredient is burned to ash. Add stir-fried black Gardenia Fruit, stir-fried black Polygonum Multiflorum Stem, ink, and Dragon's Blood (Xuejie). Grind all into a fine powder and mix into decocted medicine for ingestion. Alternatively, refine honey to make pills, taking fifty pills per dose, delivered with clear rice soup.
Secretly Transmitted Empirical Formulas for Treating Uterine Hemorrhage:
Formula 1: Use dry black donkey dung ground into coarse particles. Place in a jar, burn to produce smoke, and let the woman suffering from hemorrhage sit above it to inhale the smoke. After a long time, it will heal itself.
Formula 2: Burn Jingmo (Beijing Ink) until the smoke is gone, grind into powder, take two qian, delivered with yellow wine.
Formula 3: Burn Guanzhong (likely referring to a specific herb or part, contextually ambiguous but kept as name) to retain its nature, grind into powder, mix with yellow wine for administration.
Formula 4: Use juice from thorn buds mixed with child's urine and wine for ingestion.
Formula 5: Use three qian of dried lacquer and one qian of Trogopterorum Excrement (Wulingzhi), grind into powder, and deliver with yellow wine.
Formula 6: Burn persimmon cakes to ash, take two qian, deliver with plain boiled water.
Formula 7: Stir-fry cotton seeds until yellow, mix with equal parts of Licorice Root and Scutellaria Root, grind into powder. Take two qian per dose on an empty stomach, delivered with yellow wine.

Take two qian per dose on an empty stomach with yellow wine. Or make pills with rice paste, size of paulownia seeds. Take fifty pills per dose on an empty stomach with vinegar water.
Formula 9: Treats persistent leakage. Burn Sophora Fruit (Huai Zi) to retain its nature, grind into powder. Take three qian on an empty stomach with warm boiled water to stop bleeding.
Formula 10: Treats benglou with divine efficacy. Dry human hair from boys, small peach red seeds (unlimited amount). Grind into fine powder, deliver with yellow wine.
Formula 11: Treats unceasing menstrual hemorrhage. Burn dog skull bones to ash, sift finely. Use good non-ashy yellow wine: one bell of wine uses one part ash; two bells use two parts ash; three bells use three parts ash. If bleeding does not stop, continue drinking seven bells of wine using seven parts ash. This is highly effective.
A woman suffered from benglou, with a yellow or reddish complexion, frequent pain in the waist and below the navel, fatigue in the four limbs, restlessness, and heat sensation. Before menstruation, she experienced chills and fever, and a binding sensation in both hypochondria. This was caused by spleen and stomach deficiency, sinking of primordial qi, and downward pressure from ministerial fire and damp-heat. She was treated with Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) added with Saposhnikovia Root (Fangfeng), Paeonia Lactiflora Radix (Shaoyao), and stir-fried black Phellodendron Bark (Huangbai), concurrently taking Guipi Tang (Restore the Spleen Decoction), resulting in recovery. (See Internal Injury chapter for Buzhong Yiqi Tang formula, and Forgetfulness chapter for Guipi Tang formula.)
A young woman suffered from leakage of foul blood, irregular menstruation, or sudden unceasing hemorrhage, discharging large amounts of watery fluid, or persistent leukorrhea. All were due to irregular diet and labor-induced injury; or pre-existing heart qi deficiency leading to heart fire attacking the spleen. Symptoms included lethargy, desire to lie down, fatigue, shortness of breath, and急促 breathing. The spleen governs nourishment of the whole body. When spleen and stomach are deficient and pericardium fire attacks, leakage and irregular menstruation occur. Moreover, spleen and stomach are the root of qi, blood, yin, and yang. One must remove dampness, clear heat, and suppress wind, allowing earth qi to expand to overcome dampness. As stated: "When fire is constrained, release it." Use Buzhong Yiqi Tang removing Tangerine Peel, Codonopsis Root (Renshen), and Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome (Baizhu), adding Atractylodes Lancea Rhizome (Cangzhu), Libanotis Root (Ben), Saposhnikovia Root (Fangfeng), Notopterygium Rhizome (Qianghuo), Angelica Dahurica Root (Duohuo), and Vitex Fruit (Manjingzi).
Supplementary Formulas:
Chubai Tang (Tree-of-Heaven Bark Decoction): Treats unceasing benglou.
Ingredients: Tree-of-Heaven Bark (Chubai Pi) (i.e., Ailanthus Root Bark, two qian, astringes blood), Dried Scutellaria Root (Kuhuang), one and a half qian, clears heat and cools blood); Prepared Rehmannia Root (Shudihuang) (one qian, nourishes blood); Angelica Sinensis Radix Head (Danggui Tou) (one and a half qian, stops bleeding); Sanguisorba Root (Diyu) (one qian, consolidates blood); Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome (Chuanxiong) (one qian); Paeonia Lactiflora Radix Alba (Baishao) (wine-fried, eight fen); Rehmannia Root (Shengdihuang) (seven fen); Long Earth (Fulonggan) (one qian); Mugwort Leaf (Aiye) (stir-fried, six fen).
The above herbs are coarsely crushed for one dose. Use two zhong of water and one spoonful of vinegar, decoct until eight fen remains. Take on an empty stomach. Bleeding will stop after three to five doses.
