The reason why the Six Channels (Liu Jing) are distinguished into Hand and Foot Yin-Yang is that the Foot channels serve as the root, while the Hand channels serve as the branch. For instance, the Foot Jueyin Wind-Wood Liver channel and the Foot Shaoyang Ministerial-Fire Gallbladder channel are interior-exteriorly related and located in the same region; the Foot Taiyin Damp-Earth Spleen channel and the Foot Yangming Dry-Metal Stomach channel; the Foot Shaoyin Sovereign-Fire Kidney channel and the Foot Taiyang Cold-Water Bladder channel, all are closely adjacent. As for the Three Yin and Three Yang Hand channels, they are quite distant from one another. Generally, the Foot Yin-Yang channels originate from the Earth, with fixed positions; the Hand Yin-Yang channels emulate the Heaven, undergoing constant changes. The Foot channels represent the standard measure, while the Hand channels represent the gauge of variation. The body remains constant while exhausting change, thus termed "Qi Du" (Extraordinary Measure). The principles of Qi Du and Chang Du (Standard Measure) are identical.
The Foot Jueyin Liver pulse is located at the Guan position on the left side, presenting as Xian (Wiry), fine, and long; the Foot Shaoyin Kidney pulse is located at the Chi position on the left side, presenting as Chen (Deep), Ru (Soggy), and Hua (Slippery); the Foot Taiyin Spleen pulse is located at the Guan position on the right side, presenting as Chen (Deep), Ruan (Soft), and Huan (Moderate); the Foot Shaoyang Gallbladder pulse is located at the Guan position on the left side, presenting as Xian (Wiry), large, and Fu (Floating); the Foot Yangming Stomach pulse is located at the Guan position on the right side, presenting as Fu (Floating), Chang (Long), and Se (Choppy); the Foot Taiyang Bladder pulse is located at the Chi position on the left side, presenting as Hong (Surging), Hua (Slippery), and Chang (Long); the Hand Jueyin Pericardium pulse is located at the Chi position on the right side, presenting as Chen (Deep), Xian (Wiry), and Shu (Rapid); the Hand Shaoyin Heart pulse is located at the Cun position on the left side, presenting as Hong (Surging) and slightly Shi (Excess); the Hand Taiyin Lung pulse is located at the Cun position on the right side, presenting as Se (Choppy), Duan (Short), and Fu (Floating); the Hand Shaoyang Sanjiao pulse is located at the Chi position on the right side, presenting as Hong (Surging), San (Scattered), and Ji (Urgent); the Hand Yangming Large Intestine pulse is located at the Cun position on the right side, presenting as Fu (Floating), Duan (Short), and Hua (Slippery); the Hand Taiyang Small Intestine pulse is located at the Cun position on the left side, presenting as Hong (Surging), Da (Large), and Jin (Tight). These constitute the pulse bodies of the Six Channels of Hand and Foot Yin-Yang. Regarding their waxing and waning, the principles of transformation do not cease; their movement and subtle shifts correspond to Heaven and Earth. The warmth of spring becomes the heat of summer; the severity of autumn becomes the cold of winter; the dynamics of the four seasonal changes respond in the pulses, which are known as the pulses of climatic arrival. Thus, the *Yao Lun* states: When Jueyin arrives, its pulse is Xian (Wiry) [another version says Chen (Deep), Duan (Short), and Shu (Rapid)]; when Shaoyin arrives, its pulse is Gou (Hooked) [another version says Jin (Tight), Xi (Fine), and Wei (Micro)]; when Taiyin arrives, its pulse is Chen (Deep) [another version says Jin (Tight), Da (Large), and Chang (Long)]; when Shaoyang arrives, the pulse is Da (Large) and Fu (Floating) [another version says occasionally Shu (Sparse), occasionally Shu (Rapid), occasionally Duan (Short), occasionally Chang (Long)]; when Yangming arrives, the pulse is Duan (Short) and Se (Choppy) [another version says Fu (Floating), Da (Large), and Duan (Short)]; when Taiyang arrives, the pulse is Da (Large) and Chang (Long). Although the original and arriving pulses reveal their forms, one must further deduce the interaction and transformation of the Six Qi, Nan Zheng (Southern Administration) and Bei Zheng (Northern Administration), Si Tian (Governing Heaven) and Zai Quan (Presiding Earth), and whether the Shaoyin pulse should appear or not. As explained in the *Yao Lun*, those governed by Yi-Geng, Bing-Xin, Ding-Ren, Wu-Gui (Metal, Water, Wood, Fire transformations) are called Bei Zheng (Northern Administration). With Shaoyin in the Zai Quan position, the Cun position does not respond. Those governed by Jia-Ji (Earth transformation), where virtue flows through the four administrations, akin to a patrol residing facing South and North, are called Nan Zheng (Southern Administration). With Shaoyin in the Si Tian position, the Cun position also does not respond. If in Bei Zheng, Jueyin is in Zai Quan, then the Right Cun does not respond; if Taiyin is in Zai Quan, then the Left Cun does not respond. If in Nan Zheng, Jueyin is in Si Tian, then the Right Cun does not respond; if Taiyin is in Si Tian, then the Left Cun does not respond. In cases of non-response, reversing the diagnostic method reveals the truth; this is the standard measure. Responding when one should not is called "Tai Guo" (Excess); responding when one should not is called "Bu Ji" (Deficiency); both are caused by external pathogenic influences. Therefore, to know whether the Shaoyin pulse should respond, one must understand that Sovereign Fire is the beginning of all things' sustenance. This discussion applies to a year; if deduced meticulously, it should be applied to days. The subtle principles cannot be ignored. If the yearly master harms the Zang organs, one must naturally gauge and treat them. If one cannot infer from one case, no further explanation will be given.
