The Lung is the Huagai (Canopy) of the five Zang organs, from which the Qi of all vessels is derived. It moves blood vessels, guards and nourishes the Zang organs, and irrigates the skin and hair. If management is improper, causing Qi and Blood to become chaotic, Feiwei (Lung Withering) and Fei Yong (Lung Abscess) will result. Although all five Zang organs can suffer from Wei (Withering) and Yong (Abscess) syndromes, this text discusses only the Lung because the Lung belongs to Metal, its number completes at Yang Jiu (the extreme odd number), its position is highest, and it is the leader of the five Zang organs, making it prone to these diseases. Therefore, it is discussed separately; for other internal abscesses and the five Weiyings, refer to other sections. Furthermore, since this disease often presents with dyspnea and cough, it is listed under the Phlegm-Fluid Dyspnea and Cough category.
