Whenever the tongue swells, there must be "Jin Chong" (a pathological entity described as a worm-like growth under the tongue) beneath the tongue, resembling a mole cricket or a silkworm lying down, with distinct head and tail; the head is slightly white. It can be cauterized with a red-hot iron wire, after which it will naturally dissipate.
To treat sudden swelling and hardness of the tongue, which rapidly obstructs the throat and causes suffocation leading to death.
Take equal parts of Baicaoshuang (Soot from burning hundred herbs) and Shiyen (Rock salt). Mix with Jinghua water (well water drawn at dawn) and apply to the tongue. After a while, the swelling subsides and recovery occurs.
To treat She Nu (bleeding from the tongue). (Formula see section on Teeth Treatment)
To treat Shanghan (Cold Damage) where heat-toxin attacks the Heart, causing the tongue to protrude more than one cun.
Take Meihua Pian Nao (Borneol) in any amount.
Grind into fine powder. Sprinkle one "yi" (approx. 0.5-1g) onto the tongue. If not healed, sprinkle again until cured.
To treat deficiency of Heart and Spleen, contraction of Wind-Cold, resulting in a stiff tongue unable to speak. (Formula see section on Various Winds and Stroke Treatment). Add Jingli (Juice of fresh leaves of Vitex trifolia) for decoction and administration.
The ears are the external manifestation of the Kidney. The Kidney stores essence. When Kidney Qi is substantial, essence ascends to connect with the ears, allowing hearing of the five tones with clarity. If over-fatigued, essence leaks out, causing buzzing sounds in the ears. When the meridians of Hand-Taiyang (Small Intestine) move reversely causing deafness, it is due to fullness of qi in the ear. Generally, deafness caused by qi reversal is relatively easy to treat, whereas deafness caused by essence depletion is difficult to cure with medicine. Since the syndromes differ, the treatments vary accordingly.
Furthermore: The ears are the manifestation of the Kidney; the Kidney is the gathering place of the Zong Mai (Grand Vessels), and its qi connects to the ears. When Kidney Qi is peaceful, one hears the five tones clearly; when Kidney Qi is imbalanced, deafness ensues.
Treatment for deafness is invariably effective.
Take Shichangpu (Rhizoma Acori Tatarinowii, one cun), Badou (Fructus Crotonis Tiglii, one seed, skin removed), Quanxie (Scorpio, one piece, toxicity removed).
Grind into fine powder. Mix with Congxian (juice of green onion) to form a pill the size of a date pit. Wrap in cotton and insert into the ear.
To treat Kidney-deficiency deafness, or wind-pathogen invading the collaterals, causing empty ringing in the ears.
Take Roushou Rong (Cibotium Barometz / Cistanche Deserticola? Note: Text says Roucongrong usually Cistanche, but context implies补肾. Standard Roucongrong is Cistanche deserticola. However, strictly translating name: Roucongrong (Herba Cistanches), soaked in wine, sliced, dried); Shanzhuyu (Fructus Corni, soaked, steamed and dried); Chuan Qianghuo (Rhizoma et Radix Notopterygii, rhizome removed); Lurong (Cornu Cervi Pantotrichum, scorched to remove hair, sliced, quenched in vinegar seven times, processed with water); Fuzi (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata, roasted, skin and navel removed, each 1 liang); Quanxie (Scorpio, toxicity removed, 27 pieces); Shexiang (Moschus, one yi, added freshly).
Grind into fine powder. Form pills using refined honey, sized like paulownia seeds. Take 70 pills per dose, increasing to 100 pills. On an empty stomach, swallow with salted wine or salted water soup.
