The brain, akin to the Yin and Yang of the heavens, utilizes thirty-six small neural glands (corresponding to the Thirty-Six Heavenly Stems in Daoist cosmology) within the brain to receive electromagnetic waves from the sun, moon, and stars. These converge to form ten central nerves of the brain. In Daoism, these ten central nerves are called the "Ten Heavenly Stems" (Shi Tian Gan), and their convergence point is named the Ren Mai (Conception Vessel). Located on the anterior aspect of the human body, there are three hundred and sixty-four nerves corresponding to the three hundred and sixty-four days of a leap year in the lunar calendar. It governs the small blood vessels of the systemic arteries and veins, possessing functions such as memory, phonation, color discrimination, speech, and the generation of intelligence.
The cerebellum, akin to the Yin and Yang of the earth, utilizes seventy-two small nerves of the cerebellum (corresponding to the Seventy-Two Earthly Fiends in Daoist cosmology) to receive electromagnetic waves from underground water, fire, and wind. These travel via the Yongquan acupoint (KI1, Springing泉) at the sole of the foot to the Huiyin acupoint (CV12, Meeting of Yin) where seventy-two Yuanjue points reside, then proceed through the spinal cord to the cerebellum to gather as the Seventy-Two Earthly Fiends. These converge to form twelve peripheral nerves of the cerebellum. In Daoism, these twelve peripheral nerves are called the "Twelve Earthly Branches" (Shi Er Di Zhi), and their gathering point is named the Du Mai (Governing Vessel). Located on the posterior aspect of the human body, there are thirty-one pairs of nerves corresponding to the approximate number of days in a month, further subdivided into three hundred and sixty-five small nerves corresponding to the three hundred and sixty-five days of the solar calendar. These enable free movement and action of the limbs.
Therefore, the terms "Heavenly Stems" and "Earthly Branches" derive from the interaction between the electromagnetic waves of the sun, moon, and stars, and the electromagnetic waves generated by water, fire, and wind within the earth and the human body. The Ren Mai and Du Mai circulate and interweave around the anterior and posterior aspects of the body, similar to electrons orbiting an atom or the moon orbiting the earth. When the nerves of the cerebrum and cerebellum cooperate and circulate, the blood vessels and nerves of the entire body remain active. Thus, individuals practicing Qigong and Zen meditation who can unblock the Ren Mai and Du Mai can enhance the input of heavenly and earthly electromagnetic waves, regulating breath and nourishing life to prevent illness. Modern imaging scans reveal that in healthy individuals, the convergence points of the Ren Mai (Ten Heavenly Stems) and Du Mai (Twelve Earthly Branches) are clear and lubricated like dewdrops, especially in advanced practitioners. Conversely, in patients, these points resemble frozen water; in critical cases, they are solidified like ice.
From birth, humans are influenced by postnatal factors such as respiration, emotions, diet, climate, and environment, prompting various physiological adjustments for adaptation. This meridian circulation, constituted by the currents of the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches forming the Twelve Primary Meridians, Fifteen Luo Collaterals, and Eight Extraordinary Vessels, which return to the Five Zang and Six Fu organs, is named after the Shang Dynasty version of the *I Ching* (Book of Changes), known as *Gui Cang* (Returning to Storage). The Twelve Primary Meridians, divided into six Yin and six Yang, undergo periodic changes in qi and blood current strength and decline according to cycles of hours, days, months, solar terms, seasons, years, decades, and sixty-year periods. This represents a stage-wise adjustment of potential levels. This continuous circulation of current, resembling mountains, is named after the Xia Dynasty version of the *I Ching*, known as *Lian Shan* (Connected Mountains). This describes the Yin-Yang circulatory operation of the Five Zang and Six Fu organs and the Twelve Primary Meridians after birth, analogous to the hexagram stacking phenomenon in the *I Ching* (see Figure 3).
The fluctuation of potential levels (strength, weakness, high, low) in the six Yin and six Yang Twelve Primary Meridians follows the cyclical hexagram phenomena of Yin-Yang meridians associated with the Heavenly Stems (Jia, Yi, Bing, Ding, Wu, Ji, Geng, Xin, Ren, Gui) and Earthly Branches (Zi, Chou, Yin, Mao, Chen, Si, Wu, Wei, Shen, You, Xu, Hai) across time scales from hours to sixty years. This constitutes the main theme of TCM physiology.
For instance, from birth to age ten, the Qi of the Hand and Foot Shaoyang Sanjiao (Triple Burner) and Gallbladder meridians prevails; from eleven to twenty, the Qi of the Hand and Foot Yangming Large Intestine and Stomach meridians prevails; from twenty-one to thirty, the Qi of the Hand and Foot Taiyang Small Intestine and Bladder meridians prevails. The flow of Yang Qi ends at thirty, marking the cessation of physical growth and development. From thirty-one to forty, the Qi of the Hand and Foot Shaoyin Heart and Kidney meridians prevails; from forty-one to fifty, the Qi of the Hand and Foot Taiyin Lung and Spleen meridians prevails; from fifty-one to sixty, the Qi of the Hand and Foot Jueyin Pericardium and Liver meridians prevails. The flow of Yin Qi ceases at sixty. From birth to sixty, the period of Yang Qi flow corresponds to the growth and development phase of organs and meridians; the period of Yin Qi flow corresponds to the phase where organ and meridian development reaches its peak and begins to decline and weaken. Thus, from birth to sixty, the cycle of growth to senescence completes one Jiazi (sixty-year cycle), mirroring the cosmic changes every sixty years, causing meridians to restart their circulation. This cyclic change is called *Yi Jing* (Changes), and the repetitive cycle is called *Zhou Yi* (Circular Changes). It is often said that the personality of the elderly resembles that of children because meridians re-circulate after age sixty.
TCM physiology views pre-natal physiological changes from conception to birth as the Form of the Eight Trigrams—specifically, the Pre-Heaven Ba Gua. Post-natal physiological changes from birth to sixty, influenced by celestial bodies, terrestrial elements (water, fire, wind), and environmental, dietary, emotional, and psychological factors, utilize the Twelve Primary Meridians and Yin-Yang interactions as the foundation for dynamic changes represented by the sixty-four hexagrams of the *I Ching*. This is the Application of the Eight Trigrams—specifically, the Post-Heaven Ba Gua.
For example, over seventy percent of the earth's surface is water, and the human body also consists of approximately seventy percent water. Just as ocean tides are affected by the lunar phases, human body fluids are similarly influenced. The earth's magnetic field arises from its iron content; since human blood contains iron, the human body is also affected by the earth's magnetic field. Thus, the human body is constantly influenced by the Qi of heaven and earth.
As derived above, humans are microcosms. The *Huangdi Neijing* (Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon) encompasses the relationships between astronomy, calendrics, meteorology, and medicine. Therefore, despite modern scientific advancements in anatomy and disease treatment, understanding pathology and health remains rooted in the principles of the Five Elements' generation and restriction, and the Yin-Yang waxing and waning of the Twelve Primary Meridians. To resolve medical dilemmas, it is essential to re-understand TCM. Human life spans decades, not days. TCM treatment must account for sixty-year cycles; injuries to specific meridians or organs via surgery may have unforeseen impacts on Qi and Blood dynamics decades later.
Modern Western medicine often relies on surgery without understanding how Qi and Blood in the Twelve Primary Meridians and Five Zang/Six Fu organs wax and wane with age, leading to improper surgeries or medications that cause Six Meridian transmission (complications) and side effects, thereby harming patients. Acupuncture, using only a fine needle, induces significant changes, whereas surgery causes lifelong harm, let alone organ transplantation.
For example, procedures such as cesarean sections, tubal ligations, hysterectomies for fibroids/cancer, abortions, or thyroid surgeries can harm meridian circulation. Patients may not experience adverse effects until age forty, when Qi flows into the Hand Shaoyin Heart and Foot Shaoyin Kidney meridians, resulting in heart weakness, back pain, etc. Anesthesia affecting the Mingmen acupoint (GV4, Gate of Life) in the lumbar region can cause rapid cognitive decline. TCM physiology states the Kidney is the source of life, the waist is the residence of the Kidney, the Kidney governs bones, bones generate marrow, and the brain is the sea of marrow. Damaging the waist harms the Kidney, which harms the brain, damaging the source of life. This contributes to osteoporosis and dementia in women due to Kidney deficiency.
The *Huangdi Neijing* elucidates the secrets of Yin-Yang and the sources of disease. Chapter 1, *Shanggu Tianzhen Lun* (Discussion on Natural Vitality in Antiquity), states: People in antiquity who understood the Dao modeled themselves on Yin and Yang, harmonized with techniques, regulated diet and sleep, avoided excessive labor, and thus maintained body and spirit, living out their natural lifespan beyond a hundred years. Today's people do not act this way; they treat wine as water, live recklessly, engage in intercourse while drunk, exhaust essence through desire, dissipate true Qi, fail to maintain fullness, neglect spiritual regulation, seek fleeting pleasure against nature, and lack routine, thus aging prematurely by fifty. The sages taught avoiding evil winds and pathogens, maintaining tranquility and emptiness so True Qi follows, guarding spirit internally so disease cannot arise. With few desires and peace of mind, even with physical labor, Qi remains smooth. Everyone finds satisfaction in food, clothing, and customs, without envy, remaining simple. Desires do not blind, and immorality does not confuse. Whether wise or foolish, they are not disturbed by external things, aligning with the Dao, thus living past a hundred with vigorous movements due to complete virtue.
Thus, avoiding disease, gaining health, and extending life depend on preservation and prevention, not just vaccines or expensive technology. Promoting TCM theory is urgent.
◎ The origins of Pre-Heaven Ba Gua, Post-Heaven Ba Gua, and Hexagram Stacking are derived from my teacher, Mr. Liu Peizhong's secret of "San Cai He Yi" (Harmony of Heaven, Earth, and Humanity).
II. TCM Theory ---- Yin-Yang and Five Elements
TCM uses human life experience and universal changes as its laboratory. Diseases arise in daily life and can be healed naturally through daily life. Based on ancient wisdom and accumulated experience adapting to nature, TCM uses the immutable principles of Yin-Yang and Five Elements generation/restriction to address all variables, providing practical medicine for health. Hence, "A physician who does not understand the Twelve Primary Meridians will err upon speaking or treating." Experience is more reliable than empty theories or books.
TCM theory and herbal medicine were originally integrated. However, while reports on herb toxicity and warnings abound, studies explaining TCM theory and pharmacology to the public are lacking.
The *Huangdi Neijing* (theory) and *Shennong Bencao Jing* to *Bencao Gangmu* (pharmacology) detail the Yin-Yang and Five Elements interactions of diseases and drugs. Since Shennong tasted hundreds of herbs and encountered seventy poisons a day, records exist on drug properties, toxicity, detoxification, processing, compatibility, contraindications, Jun-Chen-Zuo-Shi (Monarch-Minister-Assistant-Courier) roles, meridian tropism, and efficacy. These accumulated experiences detail how to use Five Elements principles and drug combinations to achieve therapeutic goals while minimizing side effects.
Historically, TCM moved away from anatomy and surgery due to complications from drugs, diet, and climate, establishing the theory of Five Elements generation/restriction. Surgery was largely abandoned except for trauma. But what exactly are the generation and restriction of the Five Elements?
(1) What are the Generation and Restriction of the Five Elements?
The basic kinetic energy balancing the universe (up, down, left, right, center) involves rising, falling, expanding, contracting, and stabilizing. These correspond to Fire, Water, Wood, Metal, and Earth. Growth is Yang; consumption is Yin. Assistance is Generation; resistance is Restriction. Humans are microcosms; the Five Elements of heaven and earth are the Five Elements of the human body. The Five Zang organs correspond to Metal (Lung), Fire (Heart), Wood (Liver), Water (Kidney), and Earth (Spleen). These represent five energetic activities.
Taking Lung Metal as an example: The Lung governs Qi. Qi movement is Wind, which is Energy. Metal conducts, absorbs, and dissipates heat. Inhaling and exhaling moisture-laden air evaporates water vapor. In winter, visible warm breath is residual heat from Lung Metal absorbing heat from Heart Fire. The Lung governs skin and hair. Skin pores regulate respiration, sweating, heat dissipation, absorption, and conduction. Summer sweat reduces kidney urination; winter sweat reduction increases urination. This temperature regulation is the function of Metal.
Fire includes Sovereign Fire and Ministerial Fire. The sun is Sovereign Fire; earth's internal heat is Ministerial Fire. The Heart is Sovereign Fire; Kidney Yang is Ministerial Fire. Fire transmits via Metal. Nutrition generates heat via fire. The Heart governs blood and thermal energy. Exercise increases heart rate and lung respiration to dissipate Heart Fire heat. If wind stops, Qi ceases, and death occurs. Body heat loss leads to decay.
Wood is the source of Fire; the Liver is Wood. The Liver governs sinews and protects blood, ensuring it flows through vessels without flooding. *Neijing* states: "The Liver stores blood; when lying down, blood returns to the Liver," like charging a battery. Upon waking, Liver blood supplies the Heart, generating vitality. If Liver blood is exhausted, fatigue ensues; rest restores it. Hepatitis B blocks Liver blood return due to toxins/cold, causing constant fatigue and bitter taste. Rapid Lung Metal heat dissipation depletes Heart Fire heat, accelerating Liver blood depletion, leading to tendon issues and cramps. Hence, *Neijing*: "All wind, tremors, and dizziness belong to the Liver." This illustrates Wood generating Fire, and Metal restricting Wood.
The Kidney is the Water organ. Tonifying the Kidney strengthens Yang, the generative energy of life. The Kidney is the beginning of life; tonifying it benefits the whole body. Strengthening Yang enhances generative energy for both men and women, not merely sexual function.
*Ling Shu, Channel Meridian Chapter 10*: "When man is born, Essence forms first, generating Marrow and Brain. Bone is the framework, Vessels supply nutrients, Sinews provide strength, Flesh is the wall, Skin/Hair grow strong. Grain enters the Stomach, channels open, Qi and Blood flow." Also: "Kidney governs bone, bone governs marrow." Kidney Water generates bone, supporting Wood (sinews/vessels). Strong Kidney Yang promotes Liver Wood growth, supplying Heart Fire. Strong Kidney Yin reduces Heart Fire consumption, aiding Liver blood storage. "Nourishing Yin lowers Fire."
Spleen is Earth, nurturing all things. The Spleen governs muscle. Strong Earth means good digestion and strong muscles, distributing sweet fluids to moisten the body. Strong muscles give skin elasticity, aiding Lung Metal's heat functions. Poor appetite weakens muscle and Lung Qi, illustrating Earth generating Metal.
Weather descends as rain/water; water vapor rises as clouds/fog. Visible descending rain is common; rising vapor is less visible except during solar terms. Strong Lung Metal ensures smooth urination/bowel movements. Weak Lung Metal fails to transform water vapor, leading to edema/uremia due to failed Metal-Water generation.
The Five Zang govern rising, falling, expanding, contracting, and stabilizing, meaning all organs participate in respiration, not just the Lungs.
Lung Metal inhaling is contraction; Liver Wood exhaling is expansion. Heart Fire heating condensed Qi aids expansion. Kidney Water condensing Qi aids Lung contraction. Balanced speed of rise/fall/contraction/expansion is stability, governed by Spleen Earth. Figure 4 shows Five Elements generation/restriction as equilibrium of Qi movement, representing electrical/energy transmission, not literal elemental interaction, but the cycle of energy rising, falling, diffusing, converging, and stabilizing endlessly. This balance is the Golden Mean, the highest principle of TCM. The Qi transformation of the Five Elements and the *Zhou Yi* of the Twelve Primary Meridians represent the highest state of health.
Despite scientific progress and potent drugs, like pesticides failing to eliminate pests, medical technology cannot fully solve human health issues and may cause greater harm. The solution lies in re-understanding TCM theory—the pathology of the Twelve Primary Meridians and the balanced Zang-Xiang theory of Yin-Yang and Five Elements.
