The *Siku Quanshu* (Complete Library of the Four Treasuries) abstract states: *Shangzi Zasuo*, one volume, written by Feng Shike of the Ming Dynasty. It is a miscellaneous treatise on medicine. Its main idea focuses on warming and tonifying, extolling Li Dongyuan while suppressing Zhu Danxi. This is also a view limited to a corner.

Yang Sizhi's preface says: In the regions of Fujian and Guangdong, there exists a poison known as Gu (蛊毒, Gu poison). It has been discussed by the world for a long time. In the Jiashen year of the Wanli era, I inspected the customs in Fujian and sighed, hoping to eliminate this harm. I clarified laws and orders, specialized treatment methods, and warned the stubborn. This helps to transform the violent. Furthermore, I worried that if only specialized institutions handled it without broad dissemination, it would eventually be forgotten. Therefore, I extensively collected various formulas for treating Gu poison, carved them onto woodblocks, and distributed them to benefit the people. After the carving was completed, someone asked me, "You wield the law to strike against evil; you cannot make the people entirely free from sin, yet you bother yourself with the trivialities of medical arts?" I said, "Not so. The warm yang of spring nourishes all things but does not reach into deep valleys; sudden thunder can shake off evil but may overlook minor matters. Even the creative force of nature acts this way, let alone those who enforce the law? It is like a great general defending against invaders, leading troops to sweep away demonic miasma, while villagers, old and young, carry sticks and bows, defending their homes. Is this not better than being unarmed? I dare not relax the laws prohibiting evil, but by widely collecting specific formulas, I indeed allow the people to defend themselves." Another person said, "Gu demons are unpredictable, invisible, and cannot be driven away. What should be done?" I smiled and said, "Not so. Han Yu once drove away crocodiles, Lu state once struck divine snakes, locusts did not enter the borders, and tigers crossed the river northward. Were the ancients different from us? They merely relied on sincere governance to move heaven and earth. This depends on capable officials to plan. I will examine this." On an auspicious day in mid-winter of the Jiashen year of the Wanli era, Yang Sizhi of Daliang, Jinshi degree holder, Wenlin Lang, Censor-in-Chief inspecting Fujian, authorized to concurrently manage salt laws and military affairs, Shaanxi Circuit, wrote this.
[Zhang Shi (Sanxi) *Yixue Liuyao*] Included in *Yicang Mulu* (Catalog of Medical Treasures), twenty volumes. Extant.
Zhang Sanxi said: Medicine, from the times of Yan and Huang, Qin and Han, down to Tang, Song, Liao, Jin, and Yuan, has books filling carts and oxen, not few in number. However, they vary in purity and impurity. If too complex, they seem vague and mixed; if too simple, they lack completeness. Moreover, their principles contradict each other, and chapters contain errors, making them hard to follow and difficult to study. My family has practiced medicine for generations. Devoting myself for over thirty years, I have only obtained eight major principles of ancient healing: Yin, Yang, Exterior, Interior, Cold, Heat, Deficiency, and Excess. Qi, Blood, Phlegm, and Fire are all included within these. The six main aspects of medicine are: Diagnostic Methods, Meridians, Pathogenesis, Drug Properties, Treatment Methods, and Six Qi (Luck). If diagnostic methods are unclear, how can one know the condition? Thus, I first carved *Four Diagnostic Methods*. If meridians are not distinguished, how can one know the root of disease? If pathogenesis is not observed, how can one know transmission? Thus, next comes *Meridian Examination*, then *Pathogenesis Section*. If drug properties are not familiar, how can one prescribe? Although outlines are complete, the essentials are tight. Thus, next comes *Selection of Materia Medica*. Without treatment methods, how can one achieve efficacy? And without knowing the source of Heaven and Earth's Yin-Yang and Five Elements' generation and transformation, how can one understand meridians? Thus, next comes *Collection of Treatment Methods*, then *Brief on Six Qi*. I dare not arrogantly attach my own views; I truly extensively collected from many books, extracting their essentials. Even occasional insights are proven good rules and unchangeable great laws. The words are detailed and exhaustive; the methods are simple and easy. If students truly devote themselves to studying, they will master diagnostics, distinguish meridians, and become refined and perceptive regarding pathogenesis and materia medica. With prescribed treatments and silent understanding of Six Qi, they will embody the principles of generation and transformation, responding immediately to prescriptions. Who could fail to hit the mark and enter the inner sanctum of Huangdi, Qibo, Lu Bian? Although called "Six Essentials," it is actually a complete book of medicine. Those who read the table of contents will gain understanding naturally.
Preface by Zhang Weifan et al.: Alas! My late grandfather, named Sanxi, courtesy name Shucheng, pseudonym Siquan, wandered in the Apricot Grove (medical field), and was a respected figure in the capital's medical community for nearly thirty years. Now he has passed away for three generations. We could not personally receive his guidance. Fortunately, we secretly glimpsed the profound mysteries of Fuxi and Shennong, compiled them into a volume named *Yixue Liuyao*. All my comrades recite it morning and evening. Unfortunately, it suffered from a heavenly fire disaster, half of the blocks were burned, leaving regret to this day. Thanks to Mr. Zhu, courtesy name Jingqiao, who donated his collected books to the printers, completing the missing parts and correcting errors, allowing it to circulate again. This collection clarifies and continues our ancestor's legacy, serving as a guide for future learners.
*Siku Quanshu* abstract: *Yixue Liuyao*, nineteen volumes, written by Zhang Sanxi of the Ming Dynasty. Sanxi, courtesy name Shucheng, was from Ying Tian. This work was completed in the Yiyu year of the Wanli era. It discusses six major aspects of medicine separately. First is *Four Diagnostic Methods* (one volume), second is *Meridian Examination* (one volume), third is *Pathogenesis Section* (two volumes), fourth is *Selection of Materia Medica* (six volumes), fifth is *Collection of Treatment Methods* (eight volumes), sixth is *Brief on Six Qi* (one volume). He claimed to extensively collect from many books and gather their essentials. However, it merely records old texts without critical synthesis. Wang Kentang's preface calls it sacred and divine, which is excessive.
[Xu Shi (Zhaozhen) *Yijing*] Included in *Yicang Mulu*, two volumes. Extant.
Wu Xiu's preface summary: I have observed the Xu family practicing medicine. From Chao Fu and Xu You downwards, there was Xu Ding in Han, Xu Xun in Jin, Xu Zhicang in Sui, Xu Xiaochong and Xu Yizong in Tang, and Xu Shuwai and Xu Hong in Song. All deeply mastered the medical realm, wrote books, and became models for eternity. Mr. Xu Peiyuan's learning rivals Dong Zhongshu and Jia Yi; his writing matches Han Yu. His pursuit of improvement is unmatched, whether along the Yangtze or throughout the seas. I admired his talent and advised him to take the imperial examinations. He responded with feeling, saying, "Wealth and honor are destined; they cannot be forced. Rather than rising in officialdom and facing jealousy, why not inherit medical skills to bring people to benevolence and longevity?" Thus, he took family heritage texts and historical formularies, studied them deeply, adjusted his techniques like changing winter furs for summer clothes, and mastered his art. So, from kings and ministers to village folk, anyone suffering illness benefited from his herbs and treatments, appearing as bright as the sun melting ice or cool as washing heat in clear water. He focused solely on benevolence, never seeking thanks. Thus, his grace covered living beings, his name shocked the enlightened age, rare among physicians through history. He reflected further: "Medicine is vast, and ancient words are numerous. If not simplified and recorded, how will future practitioners find a standard?" So he extensively collected various schools, examined pulses, diagnosed conditions, identified names and meridians, and meticulously recorded subtle language and the principles of sovereign, minister, assistant, and courier drugs, as well as cold, hot, warm, flat, slow, urgent formulas. These include *Zhenyi*, *Yibian*, *Yojing*, *Suwen Pinglin*, *Yijia Sishu*, *Shanghan Jiehuo*, *Nuke Yaolun*, *Yansi Baoxun*, *Douzhen Biyi*, *Waike Jiyan*, which spread widely. Fearing they might be lost in memory, he released family secrets, compiling them into poetic summaries for ease of memorization. I read it for days, seeing its profound intent and clear logic, concise words and complete meaning. Even TCM practitioners using this can achieve success; if patients know it, they won't be misled by quacks. Truly the iron mirror of physicians, indispensable. Hence named *Yijing* (Medical Mirror) to spread it widely. Those dedicated to this, if they master it thoroughly, need not read the *Neijing* to know all herbs; need not read the *Nanjing* to revive Qibo and Bian Que; need not read *Shanghan Lun* to understand Zhang Zhongjing; need not read *Jufang* to illuminate heat syndromes; need not read *Neiwai Shangbianhuo Lun* to distinguish internal/external injuries; need not read *Dacheng* to gather greatness. Like climbing Cloud Terrace to learn astronomy, or entering the armory to find keys, mastering shortcuts allows one to travel a thousand miles without a steed. Indeed so.

Zhu Guozhen's preface summary: Mr. Xu Peiyuan initially studied for civil service exams, excelling greatly. He abandoned it, closed his door to read, specializing in medicine. Minister Dong, originally noble and brief, desired to help but couldn't fully succeed, so people in Xunzhou revered him. Peiyuan subtly felt the times, speaking generously. Some articles were prefaced by Prime Minister Shen, others by famous lords, but *Fangji* was specifically entrusted to Pinghan for preface. *Fangji* starts with pathogenesis, then examples, then treating deficiency/excess, then citing classics for various syndromes, all summarized in rhyme. Sentences vary in length, mixing ancient and modern styles.

*Qiantang County Gazetteer* records: Jin Ke, courtesy name Runhuan, descendant of Mr. Renshan. Jin Ke had a reputation as a child prodigy. Growing up, he followed his mother's order to practice medicine. Though reading ten thousand volumes, he avoided dross. Even with extreme dangerous syndromes, he handled them calmly. He once said, "Ancient famous doctors were called He, Huan, Cang. Why so fast? Regardless of wealth or poverty, he treated everyone equally. For widows, orphans, lonely, and solitary, not only did he not charge fees, he often gave gifts. In and around Hangzhou, he saved more than hundreds of millions. Chen Renxi's preface summary: Mr. Shenzhi Jin of the city possessed lofty and vulgar-free ambitions and a heart for saving the world. Initially skilled in essay writing, upon failing to succeed, he abandoned literary studies and attacked medicine. After long research, he compiled *Shengya Bian*, elucidating annual luck and meridian marrow, Yin-Yang, exterior-interior, to raise the source of hundred diseases. Mostly broad but not redundant, detailed but essential, comprehensive and thorough, changing and interweaving. How diligent was Shenzhi's heart in bestowing kindness! He said, "If not a good prime minister, then a good doctor." This is where Confucians apply themselves. Through this book, we glimpse a part. But is this enough to exhaust Shenzhi? Shenzhi's request from the world was modest, his hope from heaven greedy. Heaven's lifespan has fixed numbers. Greeding for heaven's numbers to save a generation is impossible, but having a heart that can achieve it is possible. Did Nong Huangsheng (Shennong?) add to his moral conduct for ten thousand generations? (From *Wumeng Yuan Yiji*)

Cao Yubian's preface: Lord Dongbi, already famous for medicine in his time, saved countless lives. His sincerity was pure, and he continued the lineage. Those with hopes of rescue saw clearly as if looking through a wall. My family and I, when out of balance, invited him to treat, achieving results within set periods. Showing me his *Jishi Ling Shu*, all were key points of medical Dao, intending to share it with the world, raising all parties to the realm of longevity. Never forgetting the world, the world expects salvation. This is gaining from learning Dao, not just attacking medical skills. His learning probes the great root, viewing the universe equally. Those whose learning stays on the skin, though careful and latent, do not realize it themselves. Learning penetrating the spirit marrow breaks barriers, feeling pain as one's own. He also compiled effective past formulas into a volume named *Zhouhou Mifang*. Since shared with the world, why call it secret? Past people's serious secrecy, what is secret? Meet and transmit, don't meet and don't transmit. Meet and speak, it's a treasure for saving the world; don't meet and transmit, lightly it's wind in ears, heavily it's pearl thrown in darkness. Alas, this is why meeting is hard, and rarely seen saving in the world. (From *Yangjie Tang Ji*)

Introduction: I privately hear that a thousand formulas are easy to get, one effective one is hard to seek. I paid attention to this path, experiencing much frost. Seeing recent carvings of ancient formulas, mostly hiding luck, medicines incomplete, proportions unequal, processing not refined, losing the original intent of ancient formulas, how can one expect reviving the dead? I truly worried. Often fearing my son didn't know the mystery of benevolent art, spreading errors, harming people unknowingly. I didn't believe this wouldn't harm people. So I recounted my grandfather Apricot Grove Old Man's secret formulas, my father Yunquan Old Man's experienced medicines, and my own effective techniques, and mysterious agents heard in Jianghu, not sparing gold and money, seeking them to help my son achieve the way of saving the world. Among soups, pills, powders, and ends, medicines match suitable formulas, formulas contain true sections, worldly untransmitted formulas, truly treasures of the family. Recently, honored by Southern Mountain Mr. Wu Dashan, *Yixue Gouxuan* has been carved and circulated. Also honored by Taikun Zheng Shijun requesting my *Suijin Fang*, re-carved attached after *Gouxuan*, to share with the world, isn't this perfect? Bowing and thinking, this formula truly cost a thousand gold to obtain. Only hoping fellow cultivators and gentlemen cherish it, don't treat it lightly. Together practice benevolent grace, each fulfill filial piety and kindness, this is my intent. Additionally attaching various immortal wonderful skills and clever strange formulas, appended at the end, to help heroes inside and outside sea glance. Making them not confused when facing events, isn't this expressing my humble assistance? In the month of late autumn of the Guisi year of Wanli, Wang Wenmo of Xuzhou, Jiangxi, respectfully wrote the preface.

Self-preface: A guest peeking through a broken window mocked me, saying, "You are in a state of separation and loss, yet examining the mysterious words of *Suwen*, are you one who knows the root?" I said, "Root is the body. Branches and leaves are descendants. To want branches lush and dense, without first cultivating the root, is it wise? Body diseases are many, trying hundred medicines without full recovery, must be because having taken decoctions but not reaching their principle. Suddenly closing doors for four years, observing ancient and modern formula theories, sorting their essentials, summarizing their words, revealing their hidden meanings, then classifying and editing, annotating separately, making people readable and understanding in heart, handling clinical cases readily, not suffering from breaking bones repeatedly. Immersing below, thereby洞察 subtle details, preserving life amidst frost and snow, precisely praying for spring blooming. Otherwise, even Sima Qian's *Tongjian* still claims wasting spirit, what kind of person am I, daring to claim skill self-made?" Guest said, "Yes. But people's blood vessels are same, yet diseases differ. Some due to constitution, some due to infection. Knowing Rhubarb can guide stagnation, but not knowing it harms middle jiao; knowing Aconite can tonify deficiency, but not knowing it leaves toxicity. Can you save all one by one?" I said, "It is ambition. Unable to do so, how dare I not use numbing/drugging medicine on heart and body, to establish foundation for ten thousand generations, then plan with benevolent people?" Guest said, "Encourage him." On the upper Ding day of mid-spring in the Yihai year, Nanfeng Li Gao narrated.

Self-preface summary: My family ancestors were scholarly doctors. There was Mr. Li Lanxi Rong, the Woodcutter Yangzi, who was also my maternal grandfather. Deeply understanding medical principles, saving people by tens of thousands. Once expounded *Ganzhu Jing*, also authored *Erian Baojian*, to benefit ten thousand generations. Broad learning and wide reading, though seeing various families' books, vainly set up without order, useless for application. One day sighing, said, "Medical books are mostly useless. Want to collect essences, gather hundred tests hundred effective formulas, compile into one volume, as family treasure." Finally did not finish. I inheriting ancestral art, also studying under Master Lanxi, how can I not continue his will? So taking leisure days, recording oral transmission and heart teaching sources, and my own spiritual comprehension truth, recording them. Again earnestly requesting Mr. Huating to correct, Mr. Yangzhi to add discussions. The book became clear. Regarding Cold Damage syndromes, original collections listed Wind first. I alone list Cold as chief. Is it liking difference? Actually Wind syndrome although source of hundred diseases, people know it is beginning of hundred diseases, those who can treat exist. As for Cold Damage syndromes, many don't recognize,轻视 them, not knowing Cold Damage is worse than Wind. If this syndrome not understood, at beginning of getting sick, cannot detail source of sickness, meridians transmitted, blindly prescribing, causing various transformations, shortening life. Those curing this disease, one or two. My family deeply knows this, so earnestly listing as first chapter, as medical guide. Jointly planning to carve. Guest reading this book, said to me, "Your book, is it most essential? Pulse theory detailed and clear, lifting what others cannot comprehend, seeing your book, all know diagnosing pulse. Formula theory distinct, lifting what other books茫然 no help, seeing your book all know disease source, throwing medicine. And that Varicella chapter, extremely smooth reverse danger three diagrams, and people can explore thoroughly. Thus Varicella not lose treatment, nor be mistaken by quack. Moreover, doctor takes saving world as heart."
