(These are) formulas that Wang Shuo has personally verified and treated. I have copied their dosages, generally to prepare for emergency needs. I consider myself unlearned and insignificant, yet having received your kindness and recognition, I dare not decline. Soon after, scholars and officials also became quite aware of this book. Not regarding it as superficial, visitors seeking advice came in succession. Thus, based on what had already been compiled, I highlighted its outlines and further analyzed and distinguished within it. The general overview is now roughly complete. If it can be adopted, how could I dare not share it with those who value health preservation?
Wang Shuo, newly recovered from illness, holding the title of Chengjie Lang (Military Officer of Accompanying Steps), Supervisor of the Wine Tax Office in Fuyang County, Lin'an Prefecture, recorded this.
Chen Zhensun stated: *Yijian Fang* (Easy-to-Simple Formulas), one volume, was authored by Wang Shuo (courtesy name Defu) from Yongjia. It contains thirty modified formulas, thirty types of prepared herbs, and ten common pill medicines available in markets, intended as preparation for sudden applications. This book circulated widely in the world.
Liu Chenweng said: Since *Yijian Fang* became popular, the "Four Great Formulas" were abandoned. Down to various collected formulas such as *San Yin Bai Yi Fang*, they too were abandoned. Even the *Ju Fang* (Bureau Formulas) were abandoned. This is akin to how, once *Zhongyong* (The Doctrine of the Mean) and *Daxue* (The Great Learning) became prominent, the commentaries and interpretations of other classics were abandoned; even the *Shi* (Book of Songs), *Shu* (Book of Documents), *Yi* (Book of Changes), and *Chunqiu* (Spring and Autumn Annals) were abandoned. Therefore, *Yijian Fang* is the gathering place of famous physicians of recent times. The Four Books are the *Yijian Fang* of our Confucian scholars. (From Xuxi Jichao Ji'An Ji)
Yang Shiying said: Regarding *Yijian Fang Lun*, countless lives have been saved before and after. Scholars of recent times often judge it using the standards of the *Spring and Autumn Annals*, saying, "*Yijian Fang* also has faults." Consequently, works like *Zengguang Yijian Fang* (Expanded Easy-to-Simple Formulas) and *Xu Yijian Fang* (Continued Easy-to-Simple Formulas) appeared, borrowing the great names of the ancients to assert their own subjective theories. Alas! What did Mr. Wang owe to people? I believe *Yijian Fang Lun* serves as a guide for later learners, similar in discussion to *Sishi Zhiyao* (Essentials of Four Seasons Treatment); there exists an internal standard of judgment. Moreover, Mr. Wang revised his dosages multiple times in his later years. Just as solar and lunar eclipses do not diminish the brightness of the sun and moon, these revisions do not detract from the work's value. As for those who nitpick and criticize excessively, perhaps public opinion does not support them.
[Anonymous Corrected and Annotated *Yijian Fang Lun*], One Volume, Extant.
Inscription states: This book is a genuine transmitted original text, further corrected, differing greatly from copies bought in markets. Over twenty passages were supplemented to fill gaps, such as the discussion on Jiangqi Tang (Qi-Descending Decoction) addressing Qi disorders. The discussions frequently cite herbs from the *Ju Fang* but do not list the formulas; these are now annotated below, totaling over thirty formulas, such as Xiao Xuming Tang (Minor Continuation of Life Decoction). If a formula name is mentioned in the discussion but appears in another section, it is not re-annotated, such as Baizhu Jiu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Wine) or Shu Fu Tang (Atractylodes and Aconite Decoction). Market pills are not included. For treatment and preparation methods, those wishing to prepare them themselves must refer to the *Ju Fang*. These methods are now fully included without error or omission, truly comprehensive. With this book at home, upon encountering illness, one glance reveals everything clearly. The printing is small-sized with clean characters, convenient for carrying during land or water travel, making it exceptionally perfect. Collectors should exercise their own discernment.
[Sun's (Zhi) Revised *Yijian Fang Lun*] (Recorded as *Zengsun Yijian Fang* or *Zengpin Yijian Fang* in *Danliao Fang*), Lost.
Lu Zuchang said: I observe that Sun Zhining's revision of *Yijian Fang* builds upon Wang Shuo, sharpening an old sword; yet adding concise sections pushes past Li Zijian, digging a new pit. If one sees this but does not sheathe the sword and fill the pit, the harm to others will be endless.
[Lu's (Zuchang) Continued *Yijian Fang Lun*], Five Volumes, Extant.
Preface states: Ancient sages explained profound truths, illustrating the difficulty of medicine, saying: The louse is a louse, a type of insect, distinct in form, causing itching, with light harm. It dislikes light and prefers darkness, avoids cold and seeks warmth, sucks skin and bites blood, seeking mates to reproduce. Originally unknown in origin or species, it first annoys people; scratching yields only one. When it thrives, it clusters in clothing seams and hairlines, impossible to count or comb away. On the body, not exceeding shoulders; on shoulders, not dropping below the neck. Its form and nature seem unchanged, its habits fixed. Yet why does color variation cause such different reactions? Black lice decline when exposed to Veratrum nigrum; white lice perish near Mercury. Observing this, any skilled physician, when diagnosing, should treat pure syndromes with clarity and precision, like a child answering a teacher; for complex syndromes, prescriptions should be all-encompassing, like a scholar solving a combined essay topic. Also, a herbal merchant had a seventeen-year-old son, recently crowned, suffering from head lice. The father used Mercury to make a hair tie to repel them. After ten days, lice remained. His complexion withered, spirit declined. He complained of cold head. The father suspected dietary craving caused the ailment, changed doctors, treated it as Spleen deficiency due to overthinking, with no effect. The father fasted for Daoist rituals. One day, seeing his emaciated son, he asked the reason and confessed everything. The Daoist examined the cold head and realized it was Mercury poisoning. Smiling gently, he said: No medicine can cure this; only I have a method. I will make two silver rods, size of nasal passages, each 2.4 cun long, corresponding to the 24 Solar Terms. The tops must be flat. I will attend tomorrow morning. The family believed him. The Daoist arrived as promised, took the silver rods, chanted incantations several times, inserted them into the boy's nostrils, bowed, and said: Retreat for now, I will return at dusk. Slowly removing the rods, he laughed loudly, picking out over ten drops of Mercury with his fingernails, showing them to the family, taking nothing, leaving cheerfully despite挽留. The son recovered. The father then read the *Shennong Bencao Jing* and learned Mercury's nature: entering flesh causes joint contraction; entering brain erodes it completely. The Daoist used silver rods to extract Mercury, knowing Mercury corrodes silver. All actions were designed to mystify his technique and strengthen the patient's faith. From this, we see a good physician must be knowledgeable, broad-minded, value life, disdain wealth, and prevent hazards in medication. Otherwise, one cannot master medicine. How can one ignore this difficulty and take *Yijian Fang* as a teacher, borrowing methods for livelihood? Gentlemen who respect life, wishing to use *Yijian Fang*, are advised to consult corrective texts. Use if appropriate, take if suitable, avoiding the deep warning that "disease may not kill, but medicine kills many."
Note: Lu Zuchang was from Yongjia, pseudonym Dijng Laoren. In the book, he claims to have suffered a strange illness in youth, leading to his interest in medical theory. Mr. Chen Wuzhe, a good physician in our hometown, always discussed with him upon meeting. Thus, Lu Zuchang lived after the Shaoxing era. This book corrects Wang Shuo and Sun Zhining's works meticulously, criticizing them severely. It is not merely a continuation, making the title puzzling. Checking *Danliao Fang*, it cites this book as *Yijian Fang Jiumiu* (Correcting Errors in Yijian Fang). Thus, the preface's mention of "consulting corrections" refers to this work. Previously reading Anonymous's *Cohuai Ji*, Medical Section, found *Yijian Fang Jiumiu*. Likely later editors merged it with Shi Fa's book, changing the old title and adding "Later Collection."
[Shi's (Fa) Continued *Yijian Fang Lun*], Six Volumes, Extant.
Inscription states: Wang Defu composed *Yijian Fang*, largely selecting from *San Yin Fang* and adding modifications from other formulas. Today, scholars cherish it, believing no book surpasses it for quick and essential treatment. However, some lack careful proofreading, resulting in minor flaws amidst major merits. Having known Defu since youth, not for personal gain, but because human life is at stake, I cannot remain silent. Thus, I highlight these points. Do I enjoy arguing? Shi Fa, courtesy name Zhengqing, from Yongjia, wrote this.
Postscript states: Physicians write books to leave words for the world, but pulse principles are subtle and hard to explain quickly. One must clearly indicate deficiency/excess and cold/heat syndromes so people can follow easily. Wang's formula, named *Yijian*, is favored by scholars for convenience. However, it fails to distinguish deficiency/excess and cold/heat. Calling it simple might be too simple. This is why I continued the discussion. My humble views may be criticized by later generations. Written respectfully in Gui Tang study, mid-May, Guimao year of Chunxi.
Monk Jihong said: Shi Fa's *Continued Yijian Fang Lun* mentions Sansheng Yin (Three Lives Decoction). Wang Shuo stated it treats stroke with unconsciousness, phlegm obstructing qi, throat sounds, regardless of external wind-cold or internal emotional injury, whether pulses are deep/fixed or floating/prosperous. This misleads many learners. One must know that for stroke, cold-strike, damp-strike, or Qi-strike with deep pulses, it can be used with modifications. But if pulses are floating/prosperous, they are likely floating, large, and rapid, indicating stroke with heat. How can one administer heating agents like Aconite and Typhonium? Doing so adds fire to fire. First use Xixian San (Saliva-Expelling Powder) to remove phlegm slightly. Once revived, use Modified Xiao Xuming Tang to disperse. This is correct. Modern physicians, learning mostly from *Yijian Fang*, see stroke, fail to distinguish cold/heat, and rashly give Sansheng Yin. If ineffective, switch to Sanjian Tang (Three Builders Decoction). If still ineffective, resort to Heixin Dan (Black Tin Pill), hoping for luck, sometimes harming people. This stems from Wang Shuo. Also, Summerheat stroke causes choking and unconsciousness, with weak/slow pulses. Unaware practitioners using Sansheng Yin bring disaster swiftly. Be cautious. This is Shi Fa's view. Jihong read *Yiyu*, which states stroke with non-large pulses is not heat, but wind. Also, Qi stagnation and Phlegm accumulation often show deep pulses, so floating without heat or deep without excess exist. This explains Wang's uncritical use of Sansheng Yin. It is not entirely wrong. But if pulses are floating/rapid with heat signs, isn't it harmful? Wang's claim "regardless of external/internal cause" is especially erroneous. Shi Fa's critique is valid, though his pulse differentiation is not detailed enough, and his attack on Wang sometimes lacks logic. Thus, I say masters criticizing *Yijian Fang* have biases, focusing only on herbs, ignoring Yin/Yang of organs and constitution thickness. Who can judge fairly? (From *Danliao Fang*)
[Xu's (Ruoxu) *Yijian Guiyi*], Lost.
Wu Cheng's Preface states: Among recent medical formulas, only Chen Wuzhe's discussions have solid foundations, though his herbs are often ineffective. Yan Zili borrowed his discussions and added his own effective herbs, achieving both beauty. Wang Defu studied under Chen Wuzhe. His *Yijian Fang* (30 formulas) was set for remote areas with poor medical access for emergency use, not for long-term application or expert physicians. Hence, it invites criticism for being too simple, leading to attacks by Shi and Lu. Adding Malaria and Dysentery, whose origins differ, require different treatments. Some insist "No Phlegm, No Malaria; No Accumulation, No Dysentery," using one drug for all. It works for A but not B. People blame the drug, not realizing the diagnosis was unclear. I've seen malaria patients cured by following Shi's formulas according to syndrome, and others cured by Yan's formulas. Syndromes differed, results succeeded. Clearly, accurate syndrome differentiation and proper prescription yield such effects. Defu limiting treatment to Sibao Yin and Xia Er Yao is laughable. Since Defu, three have expanded the book: Sun, Shi, Lu. Xu Ruoxu of Yuzhang, a Jinshi scholar skilled in medicine, took four *Yijian Fang* versions and made five, naming it *Yijian Guiyi* (Returning to Simplicity). Discussions are more precise, formulas more comprehensive. Shi and Lu should step aside, let alone Wang and Sun. Although precise is not easy, comprehensive is not simple. Yet calling it *Yijian* honors its origin. I value its merit in curing disease and benefiting people, not its complexity. (From Collected Works)
Note: The *Yijian Fang* in *Yifang Leiju* differs from Defu's book, author unknown. Its style resembles compiling four families, possibly Xu Ruoxu's work. Yamamoto Rai'en compiled it into one volume, not complete but easier to use.
[Xia's (Demao) *Weisheng Shiquan Fang*], Song Catalog 13 Volumes, Lost.
Siku Quanshu Summary states: *Weisheng Shiquan Fang* 3 volumes, *Qiji Fang* 1 volume, authored by Xia De of Song. Courtesy name Ziyi, biography unknown. The book has an original preface by Tang Zhongyou, stating: Friend Xia Ziyi collected his master's formulas, simple and effective, 10 volumes. Added best from family collection, 2 volumes. Attached his own *Qiji Fang*, 1 volume. Total 13 volumes. Thus, not authored by one person. Treating lower back/kidney pain uses Tang Zheng Xiangguo's formula, clear evidence. Now extracted from *Yongle Dadian*, compiled into upper/middle/lower 3 volumes. Though less than 30-40% of original, symptoms/herbs/discussions are present. E.g., Liver distension with soul loss seeing birds/insects, red eyes, body spots, hair turning copper/iron, nose hair 5 chi long, foul breath, iron-colored fluid, shrimp/fish syndromes—rare anomalies treated with mild methods, likely from secret traditions, not standard paths. Others like Zigong San treating postpartum stroke are orthodox and simple, not just novel. *Zhichai Shulu Jieti* only lists *Qiji Fang* 1 vol. *Song Shi Yiwenzhi* matches Tang's preface. The 38 rare disease formulas are attached to *Chuanshi Shi Yong Fang* and scattered in *Bencao Gangmu*. Cannot discard the original book due to citations. Thus, compiled into 1 volume appended at end. Cannot distinguish master's 10 vols from family's 2 vols, so combined.

Checking this book, each formula notes transmission from someone, citing *Heji Ju Fang*, proving it's not Yuxi's. *Zhichai Shulu Jieti* lists *Chuandao Shi Yong Fang* 2 volumes by Zhuo'an Wu Yankui, Gengzi Chunxi, matching this volume count. Thus, this is Yankui's book, with "Dao" mistaken for "Shi" in transcription. This copy is shadow-written from Song block print, lacking prefaces/postscripts. Records empirical formulas. Includes one question on Bawei Wan, deeply understanding formula creation. Other formulas selected by later generations are often imprecise. Does not include Xia Ziyi's 38 rare disease formulas. Self-Preface states: Medicine explores the source of heaven/earth turbidity, observes Yin/Yang changes, follows four seasons, uses hundred herbs to treat diseases. Since Shennong wrote on metals/stones/plants, Huangdi/Qibo wrote *Neijing Suwen*, studies flourished. Famous figures like Bian Que/Huan Cao achieved fame through skill, verifiable in history. They grasped subtleties, used acupuncture/moxa/hot compresses unpredictably, rarely leaving formulas for posterity. Only Yi Yin discussed decoctions; Han Chancellor Zhang Ji (Zhongjing) expanded them, creating transmittable formulas. Disease variations are infinite, formulas finite. Using finite formulas for infinite variations leads to errors unless flexible. Thus, distinctions in meridians/syndromes and modification methods are needed. Divine understanding depends on the person. Alas! Can later generations match Bian Que/Huan Cao? Illness brings death/life in breaths; thus, formulas are necessary. Hence, any physician leaving formulas with even slight efficacy should not be discarded. My family collection is vast, from Prince He Wu Gong and my own experience/tests. Arriving in Dangtu, with free time, I sorted them daily. Similar herbs with different effects listed together, obtaining 1,111 formulas. Modern physicians hide tested formulas, fearing exposure, hoping for sudden success to mystify skills. My collection includes these hidden gems. May every household have this book, gathering top physicians' strengths for emergencies, like a loving father/son's heart. Carved in county office to spread widely.
