The purport. To administer medicines recklessly and luckily achieve success. If one encounters a situation where the pulse and symptoms are contradictory, or the era/context differs, one can only wait for death with hands tied. The resulting premature death due to "excess reinforcing excess and deficiency reinforcing deficiency" (treating excess patterns with tonifying methods and deficiency patterns with draining methods) is not necessarily without fault on the part of the physician. Therefore, I collected the diagnostic methods of past sages and my late father's empirical prescriptions, compiled them into rhymed verses, and arranged them in order afterwards. Prefaced by Huang Lian, the Mountain Dweller of Tongbi.
Gao Wu stated: *The Complete Book of Smallpox* mostly extracts discussions from Chen Zhongwen, yet omits the names of predecessors at the beginning of each chapter, likely intending to claim them as his own. I often saw him discuss pulse diagnosis in other books, stating that the left Chi position governs the Liver and the right Chi position governs the Kidney; he also claimed that Cold Damage diseases do not transmit through meridians. Upon visiting him, he said, "If the ancients in the underworld could rise again, I would execute Zhang Zhongjing, the Administrator of Changsha, scourge Wang Shuhe, and exterminate the Danxi family, before my heart would be satisfied." I asked, "Why?" He replied, "Because these medical texts harm future generations of the world." This person was evidently arrogant and self-opinionated, much like Xunzi's accusation that Zisi and Mencius confused the world.
According to Yi Guan (Imperial Physician) Ikeda Yūkō (Jin): I once read Wan Muzhai's *Heart Method of Hereditary Physicians for Smallpox* and observed the precision of its theoretical stance, knowing its therapeutic skill to be excellent. Later, I read Huang Lian's secret transmission *Empirical Prescriptions for Smallpox*, whose theories closely resembled those in *Heart Method*. I then obtained Wu Shigu's collated version of Wan's *Complete Book of Smallpox* for reading, which was entirely identical to the *Empirical Prescriptions*. Finally, I read Ding Feng's *Jade Treasury Collection for Smallpox Departments*, which was also identical to the *Empirical Prescriptions*. Yu Ruoluan wrote in his postscript: The遺 manuscripts of Lord Long from Bashu and Lord Huang from Huchu were incomplete. Subsequently, obtaining the manuscript compiled by hand from Ding Zhuweng of Moling, I realized it gathered the great achievements of Huang Long [Wan]. Furthermore, obtaining Chushanren's *Complete Book of Smallpox*, compared to the aforementioned several books, there were only differences in chapter titles. Lu Wen wrote a preface saying: (Wu's printed edition mistakenly took Lu's preface as the preface to Wan's complete book.) Obtaining Huang Lian, the Mountain Dweller of Tongbi, and his medical texts, I entrusted their printing. *Baochi Quanshu* quotes his words, also referring to them as secret transmitted smallpox treatments. However, the book collated by Zhao Yu contains the Mountain Dweller's own preface, while Lu's preface predates Xing Bang's *Empirical Preface* by five years. Thus, it is known that the complete book collated by Zhao is the true original of the Mountain Dweller, whereas the so-called secret transmitted empirical version is a renamed edition by Xing. Alas, given how the ancients referred to the Mountain Dweller thus, Wan's *Complete Book of Smallpox* seems to plagiarize the Mountain Dweller's complete book. Yet Wan's complete book aligns with *Heart Method of Hereditary Physicians*, undoubtedly originating from the same hand. Moreover, in the Wuchen year of Longqing, Wan himself wrote after completing his *Su Jin Fu*: In Bingwu year of Jiajing, I personally composed poems on pediatrics and smallpox, including *Xijiang Yue*, to teach my children. By winter of Jiyou year, I further wrote *Essentials of Heart Method for Smallpox*, keeping it hidden at home, unaware that others had copied and circulated it, even plagiarizing it as their own work for publication. These words predate Lu's preface by twenty-eight years, and his fu and *Xijiang Yue* are both recorded in Huang's book; thus, the Mountain Dweller's plagiarism is clear. Only Chen Feixia in *Youyou Ji* correctly identified Wan's book, showing keen insight. Additionally, the Mountain Dweller's own preface content also stole Wan's heart method, summarizing the text within the discussions, thereby falsely concluding it as Wan's true original. Essentially, this book's draft by Wan in Bingwu year of Jiajing had no title. He later stated that his views were unsettled at that time, written hastily, and he did not wish to show it. Hence, by winter of Jiyou year, he revised and corrected it, filling gaps, titling it *Essentials of Heart Method for Smallpox*. The Mountain Dweller stole this draft and passed it off as his own. Xing of Linqing renamed it *Secret Transmitted Empirical Prescriptions for Smallpox*. Wu of Xin'an included it in *Daquan of Smallpox*, attributing it to Wan, calling it *Complete Book of Smallpox*. Zhang of Hemei included it in *Mizhai Quanshu*, naming it *Piece of Jade for Smallpox*. None of these are names originally given by Wan. If Chuanshaozhang's collated and printed *Quick Methods Complete Book for Pediatric Medicine of Danxi - Smallpox Section* is also identical to *Complete Book of Smallpox*, then its adoption of Wan's theories under the guise of Danxi is evident.

Note: Among the three Ming dynasty handwritten copies of smallpox treatment manuals in my family's collection, which were originally unvolumed, there is a postscript by Cheng Rui of Xin'an dated the Full Moon of Spring in Jiyou Year (1539). It states that the theories of various schools are mixed up regarding right and wrong, leading to indecision in selection; the sequence is chaotic and the language verbose, making comprehensive application difficult. I found it inconvenient for clinical practice, so I compiled and printed it to promote the righteous cause of saving lives and to inspire the world to take elders as teachers. My late father said that upon pondering its purport now, it should be attributed to Chenfeng's work.
