Umbilical Convulsion: Caused by wind-toxin entering the umbilicus after the umbilical cord is cut during delivery. Symptoms include foaming at the mouth, convulsions of the four limbs, clenched fists, eyes deviating to the left or right. This condition typically manifests on the third or seventh day after birth, with yellow crusts (Huangdan) appearing in the corners of the eyes, night crying, and white blisters in the mouth and throat. Puncturing the blisters to release blood results in a cure (*Zhenjiu Dacheng · Methods for Treating Various Infantile Convulsions and Pushing/Rubbing*).
Sifeng (Four Seams): Consists of four acupoints located at the transverse creases of the middle phalanges of the four fingers (excluding the thumb). Pricking these points with a three-edged needle to induce bleeding treats infantile "Monkey Wasting Syndrome" (Husuntong Lao) (*Qixiao Liangfang*).
Monkey Wasting Syndrome (Husuntong Lao): A condition specific to infants characterized by insatiable appetite and sleeplessness throughout the night. Treatment involves pricking the flexor aspects of the middle phalanges of the index, middle, ring, and little fingers of both hands. For one-year-olds, use medium-sized needles; for six- to seven-year-olds, use large-sized needles. The depth should be approximately 0.5 cun. Withdraw the needle when it lightly touches the bone; do not accidentally puncture the tendons. In severe cases of malnutrition with fluid depletion, clear water may only appear after several days of treatment; in milder cases, white serous fluid appears immediately. After several days of treatment, blood begins to appear. Follow the principle: if one finger bleeds, prick the other non-bleeding finger; if two fingers bleed, stop pricking the remaining two. If all six fingers bleed, the disease is cured, and no further pricking is needed. Treatments should be administered every other day, preferably on sunny days, as rain renders the treatment ineffective. After pricking, the child sleeps soundly, and the craving for food diminishes. Avoid dates, chestnuts, dried fruits, and sweets, as consumption may cause relapse. If blood appears upon the first pricking, it indicates a different condition (*Chuan Ya Wai Bian · Introduction to Needling Methods*).
Clinical Observation of Acupuncture for Infantile Pertussis in 112 Cases
This group comprised 112 cases with a disease duration of 5 to 38 days. Method: After routine disinfection, prick the Sifeng points with a three-edged needle (size 5 fen/ml for infants), squeeze out mucus, and gently press the puncture site with an alcohol cotton ball. Prick once daily, treating one hand at a time, alternating hands. Generally, no other medications are used. Pay attention to the child's temperature regulation; diet should be light and easily digestible, avoiding raw, cold, sticky, greasy, and spicy foods. Results: Cured in 82 cases (73.2%), significantly effective in 21 cases (18.8%), ineffective in 9 cases (8.0%). Effective cases required an average of 5 treatments (*Chinese Journal of TCM*).
Preliminary Introduction to Acupuncture for Infantile Fever
Pricking Sifeng and the Ten Well Points (Shaoshang, Shangyang, Zhongchong, Guanchong, Shaoze, bilateral) is effective for treating infantile fever. All points are pricked repeatedly to induce bleeding. When pricking Sifeng, target the veins at the Sifeng location. Add Zhigou and Zhaohai for fever accompanied by constipation; add Neiguan and Zusanli for loss of appetite. Among 10 cases, 5 were cured after one session, 3 after two sessions, 1 after three sessions, and 1 after four sessions (*Guangdong Traditional Chinese Medicine*).
Sifeng: Located at the two ends of the transverse crease between the first and second phalanges on the palmar aspect of the four fingers excluding the thumb (two points per finger). Pricking releases yellowish-white transparent fluid. Mainly indicated for infantile malnutrition (*Chinese Acupuncture and Moxibustion*).
Sifeng: An extra point. Located in the middle of the transverse crease between the first and second joints on the palmar aspect of the index, middle, ring, and little fingers; alternatively described as at the two ends of the transverse creases between the first and second phalanges, two points per finger, totaling 16 points bilaterally. Some sources locate it at the middle phalanx of the ring finger. Use a round-bladed needle to prick and squeeze out blood. Indicated for infantile wasting diseases. Mild cases yield blood upon pricking; severe cases yield yellowish-white transparent mucus. Significant effects are reportedly seen within two to three days post-treatment (*Concise Guide to Acupoints and Their Therapies*).
Efficacy Observation of Chinese Herbal Medicine and Acupuncture for Infantile Malnutrition in 120 Cases
Treatment involved Qinggan Jianpi Decoction (Su Tiaoshen, Baizhu, Huangqi, Danggui Tou, Fuling, Suanzaoren, Longyanrou, Chao Jineijin each 10g, Guangmuxiang, Danzhuye, Bohe, Zhigancao each 3g, Zhi Yuanzhi 6g, Chantui 5g, Shengjiang 1 slice, Dazao 3 pieces) modified according to symptoms, combined with acupuncture (Main points: Sifeng, pricked to a depth of about 1 fen until yellowish-white mucus appears; Supplementary points: Neiguan, Neiting, Xingjian. Once daily or every other day, taking unilateral Sifeng and contralateral supplementary points). Results: The Chinese medicine plus acupuncture group (80 cases) had 73 cures, 5 improvements, and 2 inefficacies; the Chinese medicine-only group (40 cases) had 28 cures, 8 improvements, and 4 inefficacies; the control group (20 cases, symptomatic Western medicine) had 4 cures, 5 improvements, and 11 inefficacies (*Yunnan Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine*).
Acupuncture at Sifeng for Infantile Asthma
During operation, hold the child's hand with the palm facing up and fingers extended. Disinfect the local area with iodine tincture and alcohol. Quickly prick with a sterilized three-edged needle or sewing needle to a depth of 2–3 mm. Squeeze out yellowish-white viscous fluid from the puncture site. Treat bilateral points, once every 3 days, with 3 sessions constituting one course. A total of 37 cases were treated: 3 significantly effective, 21 improved, and 3 ineffective (*Liaoning Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine*).
Infantile Violent Epilepsy: If the eyes roll upward and the pupils move, moxa should be applied to Xianzhong... Another method involves moxing the blue vessels above Wanggu behind both ears, or pricking to induce bleeding (*Beiji Qianjin Yaofang*).
At the bifurcation of the purple-red veins on the back of the auricle, pricking to induce bleeding treats infantile impetigo of the head (*Compilation of Extraordinary Acupoints*).
Method for treating infantile violent epilepsy: Measure three finger-widths horizontally above the ear for adults, and proportionally for children. Then moxa the blue vessels above Wanggu behind both ears, or prick to induce bleeding (*Puji Fang · Acupuncture*).
Three-Edged Needle Pricking Sifeng for Infantile Stomatitis
Pricking Sifeng with a three-edged needle was tested on nearly 20 cases of infantile stomatitis, achieving satisfactory results. Generally, cure is achieved after 1–2 treatments. Specific operation: Rapidly prick with a three-edged needle (or round-bladed needle), enter the subcutaneous tissue, twist rapidly once, and release a small amount of lymph or blood. Prick once every 3–4 days (*Liaoning Medical Journal*).
Efficacy Observation of Acupoint Cutting Therapy for Pediatric Bronchial Asthma
Acupoint cutting therapy was used to treat 256 pediatric asthma cases aged 3–14 years, with disease durations of 1–12 years. Patients were divided into two groups. The pure cutting group (116 cases) took points as follows: Session 1: Danzhong; Session 2: Bilateral Feishu; Session 3: Bilateral Chuanxi. Once weekly, generally 3 sessions, with an efficacy rate of 79%. The cutting plus anti-asthma medication group (140 cases) had an efficacy rate of 80%, showing no significant difference between groups. However, adding medication during attacks controlled symptoms or significantly reduced them within 1–2 days, whereas without medication, most cases required 2–3 days for gradual control or reduction. In the group without anti-asthma medication, 4 cases experienced worsened wheezing after cutting.
Report on Acupuncture for Infantile Diarrhea in 100 Cases
For heat-type diarrhea, the treatment principle is to clear heat and resolve dampness. Take Weiqiaogu (located 1 cun above the tip of the coccyx), supplemented by Qizhong Sibian (located 1 cun above, below, left, and right of the umbilicus), Hegu, Shaoshang, and Shangyang. Prick to induce bleeding. For severe cases, acupuncture/moxibustion once daily; for mild cases, every other day (*Shaanxi New Medicine*).
Efficacy Observation of Xiaojian Xinneedle for Fever Reduction in 911 Cases
Pricking Shaoshang, Hegu, and Quchi effectively treated 911 pediatric fever cases, with an efficacy rate of 72.9%. In some cases, body temperature gradually returned to normal after one session. In cases where temperature rose again after cooling, re-pricking was effective, but the interval should be at least 1.5–2 hours. Specific method: Bleed Shaoshang by pricking; insert Hegu and Quchi 0.5–1.5 cun, using strong stimulation with rapid twisting (*Nursing Journal*).
Bleeding at Zhongchong for Infantile Night Crying
Infantile night crying is common in infants under 3 years old, often caused by fright. Based on traditional Chinese medical theory, bleeding at Zhongchong (Hand-Jueyin Pericardium Meridian) was used to treat 33 cases. Of these, 32 cases caused by fright showed immediate effect and no recurrence within a week; one case associated with diarrhea and night crying was ineffective (*Barefoot Doctor Magazine*).
Sequelae of Infantile Paralysis
Three-Edged Needle Therapy: Take Zues, Quchi, Weizhong, Zhongfeng, Shenshu, Mingmen, Xiaochangshu. Once weekly, 10 sessions per course.
Enuresis
Skin Needle Therapy: Take points along the Ren Mai pathway in the lower abdomen, the Foot-Shaoyin pathway, Baliao, Jiaji 11–21, Sanyinjiao, and Taixi. Tap once before bed daily.
Water-Qi Cupping Therapy: Apply cups every two finger-widths below Shenque down to Zhongji; apply 3–4 cups downward from points 2 finger-widths lateral to Shenque; apply 3–4 cups on each side of the sacroiliac joint.
Infantile Diarrhea
Cutting Therapy: Take points 3–4 cm lateral to the spinous process of the 11th thoracic vertebra, or Yuji. Starting from the spinous process of the 11th thoracic vertebra, cut 3–4 cm to the left or right until skin breaks and blood appears. Cover with sterile gauze. For Yuji, make a longitudinal incision parallel to muscle fibers (*Practical Acupuncture*).
Yuji Point Cutting Combined with Chinese and Western Medicine for Infantile Accumulation in 350 Cases
Make a superficial incision at Yuji, squeeze out yellowish-white fat-like substance the size of a soybean, sprinkle hemostatic powder, and cover with sterile gauze. Use various Chinese herbal formulas and Western symptomatic treatments based on individual conditions. Follow-up of 350 cases over two months: Significantly effective in 215 cases, improved in 120, ineffective in 15, with a total efficacy rate of 95.7% (*Shanghai Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine*).
Infantile Convulsion: Use a 3-fen filiform needle. Fengguan is located in the transverse crease at the root of the index finger, slightly outward and downward. Prick until blood appears. It is crucial for the patient to sweat after needling; without sweating, there is no effect. When sweating occurs, avoid wind. Wait until the sweat subsides completely before allowing the child to roam freely. Otherwise, the convulsion will not heal, may worsen, and subsequent needling will be ineffective, requiring medicinal administration. Families should pay close attention. For males, start with the left hand; for females, the right hand. During infantile rash/smallpox or conditions like sores and diarrhea, needling is strictly prohibited. This is strongly emphasized (*Record of Needling Methods and Acupoints*).
