[Case Report]
Li XX, male, 48 years old, engineer at Chongqing Plastic Machinery Factory, first seen on April 23, 1983.
Chief Complaint: Pain in both shoulder joints for 4-5 months; despite various treatments, the arms cannot be raised.
Symptoms: Localized cold pain in the upper arms, relieved by heat; inability to raise the arms; pain upon anterior and posterior elevation, more severe on the right side.
Diagnosis: Bi Syndrome (Painful Bi) [Periarthritis of Shoulder].
Treatment Principle: Warm the meridians, unblock collaterals, relieve pain.
Treatment Method: (1) Moving cupping is applied to the right arm 10 times back and forth until the skin turns red. Ashi points (Ah-shih points) are tapped with a plum-blossom needle, followed by cupping to bleed; the blood is purple-red. Dazhui (GV14) and Jianyu (LI15) are pricked with a three-edged needle to bleed; the blood is purple-red. Then, Zushimai plaster mixed with external powder is applied to the painful area. (2) For the left arm, pushing and kneading techniques are used first, followed by application of Zushimai plaster mixed with external powder.
After clinical observation, right arm pain decreased significantly after 3 days, and the arm could be raised. Left arm pain decreased slightly, but the arm still could not be raised.
Second treatment: Bloodletting was performed on both arms. Tapping was done in a circular pattern along the scapula with a plum-blossom needle, then along the meridians to the fingers. Jianyu (LI15) and Ashi points (Ah-shih points) were pricked with a three-edged needle to bleed; the blood was purple-red. External Zushimai plaster with powder was applied. The patient was instructed to perform functional exercises. After 5 bloodletting sessions, follow-up two months later showed flexible arm raising and near-complete recovery.
[Case Report]
Sun XX, male, 32 years old; member of Yaowangmiao Brigade, Chengdong, Yao County, Shaanxi, first seen on June 18, 1982.
Chief Complaint: Pain in both knee joints for over 1 year; weakness when walking.
Symptoms: Invasion of wind-cold-dampness pathogens into the four limbs; pain, soreness, and weakness in hands and feet; preference for warmth and fear of cold.
Diagnosis: Bi Syndrome (Painful Bi).
Treatment Principle: Unblock collaterals and relieve pain.
Treatment Method: Lidui (ST45), Jiexi (ST41), and Yinlingquan (SP9) were pricked with a three-edged needle to bleed. Knees were tapped with a plum-blossom needle, followed by cupping to bleed. External Zushimai plaster was applied. Symptoms completely disappeared after two treatments.
IX. Wei Syndrome (Flaccidity Syndrome)
This syndrome is mostly caused by heat pathogens invading the lungs, consuming lung fluids, leading to malnourishment of sinews and vessels; or by damp-heat pathogens steaming in the Yangming meridians, causing flaccidity and immobility of sinews and vessels; or due to chronic illness and physical deficiency, excessive sexual activity, leading to depletion of essence and blood in the liver and kidneys, resulting in malnourishment of sinews and bones. Deficiency is tonified, excess is drained.

XVI. Xiao Chuan (Asthma)
This syndrome can be divided into deficiency and excess types. Deficiency mainly involves lungs and kidneys; due to lung qi deficiency, qi has no master, leading to loss of descending authority. Kidney qi deficiency leads to insecurity of the lower origin, causing loss of qi reception. Excess is mostly caused by external wind-cold or wind-heat pathogens attacking the lungs, leading to failure of diffusion and descent. Or due to irregular diet, spleen failing transportation, accumulating dampness and generating phlegm, which attacks the lungs. Deficiency requires tonifying qi; excess requires bloodletting.
