Calamine (Lu Ganshi) one tael, Coptis Rhizome (Huanglian) one qian, Phellodendron Bark (Huangbai) and Scutellaria Root (Huangqin) two qian each.
Soak the Coptis Rhizome, Phellodendron Bark, and Scutellaria Root to extract their juices. Place the Calamine in a silver crucible, heat it until red-hot, then immerse it in the herbal juice. Repeat this process nine times until dry, stopping when the Calamine becomes brittle and酥 (su). Dry it in the sun, grind it into a fine powder, and add five fen of Borneol (Bingpian). This is excellent for treating oral ulcers and applying to the eyes. Adding a small amount of Pearl (Zhenzhu) also proves effective for treating chancres (Xiagan), promoting tissue regeneration and flesh growth. For cases involving heat-toxin, combine with Sanbai Shengyao, mix with human milk, and apply externally for immediate cure.
(Also known as Wuling Shengyao)
Mercury (Shuiyin) and Alum (Baifan) five qian each, Cinnabar (Zhusha) and Realgar (Xionghuang) two qian five fen each, Saltpeter (Huoxiao) eight qian.
Process these ingredients according to the method for preparing Shengyao (sublimation). For all kinds of nameless swellings and sores, especially those that have ulcerated for a long time with internal decay and purple or black edges, dilute the medicine with water, apply it using a chicken feather brush. The flesh will immediately turn red and vibrant, and necrotic tissue will shed. Subsequently apply Shengji San (Flesh-Regenerating Powder) to complete the healing. For conditions such as fistulas and hemorrhoids, roll this medicine into strips using paper, insert them into the tract for seven days, and the tract will naturally detach along with the medicinal strip.
Gengsheng notes: This method corresponds to the surgical technique known as "One Spear" (Yi Tiao Qiang) and must not be used indiscriminately. In recent times, surgeons often attribute non-healing wounds to the presence of a sinus tract ("guan") and repeatedly use caustic insertion therapies to liquefy the tissue. Repeated attempts to remove the tract often fail to heal the wound, leading to chronic conditions. Some resort to surgical incision or thread ligation. However, the pathway through which pus drains is termed a "sinus," but it is not a physical object per se. I have treated numerous external sores personally and have never encountered the need to extract or cut sinuses; yet, tissue regeneration and healing proceed normally. I record this here to dispel the misconceptions of contemporary practitioners. Although Shengdan (Sublimated Mercury Compound) is an essential medicine in surgery and cannot be entirely avoided, it should ideally be aged for five to seven years before use, and minimal amounts are preferable. Special caution is required for back sores and large ulcerations on the chest and abdomen. Often, if the sore has not healed, the heat-toxin from the Shengyao may penetrate into the abdomen, causing dry mouth and throat damage, a complication many people are unaware of.
