Sudden collapse with loss of speech. However, wind-stroke (Zhong Feng) must present with facial deviation, whereas convulsions and spasms are distinct symptoms. There are cases caused by emotional shock, characterized by a deep pulse and cold body, due to the absence of phlegm turbidity.
Administer Suhe Xiang Wan (Styrax Pills) mixed in ginger decoction via gavage. Once conscious, regulate treatment according to patterns of cold, heat, deficiency, or excess. For mild cases, use Wuyao Shunqi San (Aucklandia and Cyperus Powder to Smooth Qi). Some argue that this results from sudden qi rebellion; once qi returns to normalcy, recovery occurs spontaneously, even without medication. However, if the mouth is tightly closed and the pulse is imperceptible (closed syndrome), it is incurable.
There are cases of jue (syncope/cold extremities) caused by food stagnation, invariably accompanied by chest fullness and oppression.
Cases of sudden collapse in summer are termed shu feng (summerwind); these resemble wind-stroke but are actually heatstroke.
There are cases caused by fire pathogens, where internal and external fire combine to scorch the body. Liu Shouzhen attributed this to improper lifestyle management, resulting in Kidney Water failing to control Heart and Liver Fire.
There are cases caused by phlegm, where fire qi agitates and struggles, causing phlegm to obstruct the heart orifices. The above four categories (food stagnation, summerwind, fire, phlegm) should first be treated with salt water emesis, followed by Fangfeng Zhibao Tang (Saposhnikovia and Precious Treasure Decoction).
Ingredients: Tianxing (Arisaema Cum Bile), Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root), Tianma (Gastrodia Rhizome), Chenpi (Citrus Reticulata Peel), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Radix), Banxia (Pinelliae Tuber) (each 1 qian); Jiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus) (1.2 qian); Baishao (White Peony Root), Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Gancao (Licorice Root), Qingpi (Green Citrus Peel), Zhiren (Gardenia Seed), Wuyao (Lindera Root), Qianghuo (Notopterygium Rhizoma), Huangqin (Scutellaria Root), Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome), Mahuang (Ephedra Herb), Baizhi (Angelica Dahurica Radix), Niuxi (Achyranthes Root) (each 0.8 qian).
Add five slices of fresh ginger to two zhong of water, decoct, and take orally. Avoid garlic.
Xian Zheng (Epilepsy) presents with immediate falling, eyes staring straight up, foaming at the mouth, sounds resembling animals, and unconsciousness. Recovery occurs after a short while. This condition arises from wind-phlegm and food accumulation.
The symptoms manifest in five types, corresponding to five animals and five zang organs. Etiology includes depression of the seven emotions, invasion of the six climatic factors, or severe fright causing the spirit to lose its residence. It may also result from fright received in early childhood, leading to phlegm confusing the heart orifices.
A deficient and wiry pulse indicates fright; floating and surging pulse indicates Yang Epilepsy; deep pulse indicates Yin Epilepsy; floating and scattered pulse indicates Wind Epilepsy.
Yushen Zhenxin Wan (Spirit-Nourishing Heart-Calming Pill, Secret Formula) treats the five types of epilepsy, as well as mania, fright, and phlegm confusing the heart orifices.
Ingredients: Lingyangjiao (Saiga Antelope Horn), Xijiao (Rhinoceros Horn - *Note: Use substitute in practice*) (each 4 qian); Danning (Arisaema Cum Bile, processed nine times), Yuanzhi (Polygala Root, dehearted), Fushen (Poria with Hostwood, de-woodyled), Baiziren (Biota Seed, defatted), Shichangpu (Acorus Rhizoma), Juhong (Citrus Reticulata Pericarpium Rubrum) (each 8 qian); Mengshi (Calamine, calcined) (6 qian), Dahuang (Rhubarb Root), Tianma (Gastrodia Rhizoma, roasted) (7 qian), Niuhuang (Calculus Bovis) (2 qian), Gualou Qu (Trichosanthes Fruit Fermented Paste) (5 qian), Shexiang (Musk) (1.2 qian), Zhusha (Cinnabar) (2 qian), Zhen Jinbo (True Gold Leaf) (30 sheets).
