(Attached: Spinal Pain)
The thighs are located at the lower part of the body and are the convergence point of numerous Yin meridians. The cause of pain in this region is pathogenic invasion of three meridians. The Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian governs the flesh (muscles), the Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian governs the sinews (tendons/ligaments), and the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian governs the bones. When the Spleen Meridian is invaded by Dampness, the dampness flows downward to the thighs, causing soreness and pain in the muscles. When the Liver Meridian is invaded by Cold, the cold descends to the thighs, causing spasmodic and urgent pain in the sinews. When the Kidney Meridian is invaded by Cold, the cold pours downward into the thighs, causing cold pain in the bone marrow. These pains have their specific affiliations; how can they be treated uniformly?
If there is spasmodic and urgent pain in the sinews, mistaking it for Dampness and using drying agents would exhaust the blood, causing the sinews to lose nourishment, thereby exacerbating the pain. In such cases, blood-nourishing agents must be administered so that the sinews naturally relax without spasm. If there is cold pain in the bone marrow, mistaking it for Dampness and using drying agents would exhaust the marrow, leading to emptiness in the bones, which intensifies the pain due to this emptiness. Here, marrow-supplementing agents must be used to fill the Qi of the bones, alleviating the suffering. If there is soreness and pain in the flesh, using only hot herbs without drying agents may provide slight relief as the heat melts and activates the flesh, but the Dampness remains inside, delaying its removal. Therefore, hot herbs should serve as guides, drying agents as the sovereign drugs, and blood-nourishing herbs as assistants. This way, Dampness can be eliminated without depleting the blood. This is a comprehensive method.
In women postpartum, thigh pain arises from lochia flowing into the meridians. Treatment should use hot herbs as guides, blood-activating agents as sovereign drugs, and Qi-moving herbs as assistants for a cure. Mistaking this for Dampness and using drying agents would not only dry the blood in the thighs but also affect the blood throughout the body. Mistaking it for Cold and using hot herbs allows blood to move with heat, which is acceptable; however, strongly heating agents should never be used lightly. Exercise extreme caution.
The pulse in thigh pain is often deep and slow (Chen Chi). A floating and large pulse indicates Wind-Heat.
