Huo Ren (referring to the author of *Lei Zheng Huo Ren Shu*, Zhu Gong, Song Dynasty) stated: Taiyang wind-stroke gives rise to two types of Jing syndrome: Gang-Jing (Stiff Spasm) and Rou-Jing (Flaccid Spasm). Generally speaking, Jing syndrome is caused by the invasion of Wind-Dampness pathogens into the Taiyang meridians, with variations in severity. When Wind pathogen predominates, it is called Gang-Jing, because the nature of Wind is rigid and urgent; when Dampness pathogen predominates, it is called Rou-Jing, because the nature of Dampness is soft and gentle. Furthermore, there are manifestations of various deficiencies. Exterior deficiency unable to withstand Wind-Cold can also lead to Jing syndrome. Therefore, conditions such as postpartum states, metal wounds, falls and bruises, or after the suppuration of carbuncles and ulcers, and all syndromes involving excessive blood loss, can result in this disease. Here, deficiency is the root, while Wind is the branch. There are also cases where there is absolutely no Wind pathogen, yet muscle spasms and stiffness occur, leading to opisthotonos (arched back like a bow), due to blood depletion failing to nourish the sinews. Danxi (Zhu Zhenheng) said: This syndrome should not be treated as a Wind disorder using Wind-dispelling herbs, as this may further dry up the remaining Yin-blood, leading to incurable conditions. It is appropriate to use tonifying herbs combined with phlegm-heat-resolving agents, such as Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Chuanxiong Rhizoma, Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), and Zhuli (Bamboo Juice). However, Gang-Jing and Rou-Jing must be distinguished. For example, if Taiyang disease presents with fever, absence of sweat, aversion to cold, wiry and long pulse, tight head, chest fullness, locked jaw, convulsions of hands and feet, grinding of teeth, and even twitching, stiff tendons, and opisthotonos, this is Gang-Jing. If Taiyang disease presents with slight fever, profuse sweating, no aversion to cold, slow, choppy, wiry, and soft pulse, flaccid limbs, occasional twitching, open eyes, and slightly parted mouth, this is Rou-Jing.
In Taiyang disease, if the pulse is deep and thin, it indicates Jing syndrome.
