Severe vomiting and diarrhea, or excessive sexual intercourse, can severely deplete the body's True Yuan Qi (Original Qi). Once Yang Qi is dissipated, Yin Blood cannot remain secure and will also escape with it. For instance, if a man suffers from Yang Qi collapse due to excessive intercourse, and this occurs while he is with a woman, she must hold him tightly and blow breath into his mouth. After a short while, if he regains consciousness spontaneously, he may survive; if they let go immediately, he will certainly die.
Huayang Decoction (Return Yang Soup)
Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, 3 qian) Renshen (Ginseng Radix, 2 qian) Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, each 1 qian) Guangmuxiang (Costi Root, 1.5 qian)
Decoct in water and take hot.
Steaming Navel Method
Take a large bunch of green onion leaves, tie them tightly with thread, cut both ends flat to a thickness of about half an inch. Mix 3 fen of Shexiang (Musk) inside the onions. Apply Aiye (Artemisiae Argyi Folium) moxibustion on the outside to steam the heat into the abdomen; this is miraculous.
Hot Compress Qihai Acupoint (located below the navel)
Stir-fry one jin of salt until hot. First apply the hot salt to compress the Qihai acupoint, then administer Huayang Decoction.
(Appendix on Summer Diseases)
Shu (Summerheat) refers to the scorching and steaming qi of summer. When Bing-Ding days prevail, Zhurong (the Fire God) takes charge. The heat is fierce and cruel, capable of melting stones and flowing gold. Fragile bodies cannot withstand such burning and roasting, thus diseases of Zhongshu (Summerheat Stroke) are inevitable. At the onset of the disease, there is only fever, spontaneous sweating, thirst, and a dirty complexion. All other miscellaneous symptoms are later developments. However, ancients distinguished between Zhongre (Heatstroke) and Zhongshu. Is there truly "Re" (Heat) distinct from "Shu" (Summerheat)? In essence, Shu and Re are not different; the difference lies in how the person contracts them.
People of wealth avoid summerheat in cool pavilions and water towers, where bamboo surrounds the railings providing shade, and clear springs flow like jade bringing coldness. They lie on bamboo mats for coolness, wave feather fans to dispel heat, float melons and plums in water to quench thirst, and eat fresh water caltrops and crisp lotus roots to relieve vexation. They believe they can avoid summerheat. Unknowingly, wealth breeds arrogance and extravagance, which leads to lust. True Yuan Qi is consumed daily, and the muscle layers become loose. During idle conversation, they are suddenly injured by Summerwind. Pathogenic qi enters directly, causing instant coma and unconsciousness. This is called "Zhongshu obtained in stillness."
Poor and laborious people exert themselves in the fields, their sweat turning like paste, galloping on roads with throats feeling as if roasted. The red sun acts like a drought demon, no cool breeze comes, the hot ground becomes a furnace, yet cold springs are hard to find. Spirit is exhausted and near death, muscles and strength are fatigued and unaware. Suddenly they collapse and lose consciousness. This is called "Zhongre obtained through movement."
However, when Summerheat first enters, it travels from the mouth, nose, teeth, and cheeks to the Pericardium Collateral (Xinbao Luo), following the principle that fire seeks fire. Therefore, ancient methods suggest irrigating with cold water without swallowing upon contracting summerheat. If it enters the Liver, dizziness and numbness occur. If it enters the Spleen, deep sleep and unconsciousness result. If it enters the Lung, wheezing, coughing, and flaccidity appear. If it enters the Kidney, wasting-thirst develops. Zhongshu returns to the Heart, causing divine confusion and sudden collapse. This is a severe condition; a slow progression indicates shallow pathogen, while rapid progression indicates deep penetration. How to distinguish Fushu (Latent Summerheat)? Shangshu (Injured Summerheat) affects the flesh layer, causing whole-body restlessness, needle-like pain, or red swelling, because heavenly qi floats on the earth's surface, so human qi also floats on the muscular surface. Maoshu (Covered Summerheat) may present with abdominal pain and watery diarrhea, affecting the Stomach and Large Intestine; nausea indicates phlegm-fluid in the stomach opening. Fushu is essentially Maoshu that has lain dormant for a long time within the Sanjiao (Triple Burner) and intestines. Heat injures Qi but not Form, remaining unnoticed for weeks or months, later manifesting as alternating chills and fever, cholera-like vomiting and diarrhea, abdominal distension and fullness, malaria and dysentery, vexation and thirst, abdominal pain, and bloody stool. Generally, summerheat diseases do not cause body pain; if pain occurs, it is often due to the interaction of heat bathing and water-dampness. There is also Shufeng Jue (Summerwind Jue Syndrome): hand and foot spasms are termed Feng (Wind), while cold hands and feet are termed Jue (Jue). To treat this disease, one must consider the patient's social status (rich or poor), activity level (labor or rest), constitutional deficiency or excess, and the severity of the contracted pathogen to carefully adjust the medication. Only then will the treatment be appropriate.
