The primary etiology of leukorrhea (Dai Xia) is damp-heat. Red discharge relates to the Blood level, while white discharge relates to Qi or Phlegm. Leukorrhea with continuous dripping is caused by Phlegm-fluid accumulation in the Stomach flowing downward and seeping into the Bladder; treatment should employ lifting and raising methods, yet few are aware of this principle. Obese individuals are prone to Damp-Phlegm; formulas may include Hai Shi (Magnitum Laricis), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Nan Xing (Arisaematis Rhizoma), Cang Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Chao Bai (Scrophulariae Radix processed), Chuan Xiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Chun Gen Pi (Toosendan Fructus Cortex), and Qing Dai (Indicum). Lean individuals rarely suffer from leukorrhea; if they do, it is typically due to Heat, treated with Huang Bo (Phellodendri Cortex), Hua Shi (Talcum), Chun Pi (Toosendan Fructus Cortex), Chuan Xiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Hai Shi (Magnitum Laricis), and Qing Dai (Indicum) made into pills. Another prescription uses Jiao Mu (Zanthoxyli Semen) powdered and taken with rice water. In severe cases, emetics must be used at the upper jiao to lift the Qi, while at the lower jiao, Er Chen Tang (Two-Cured Decoction) is added with Cang Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), and Wa Leng Zi (Arcae Concha). Another view holds that red and white discharges both belong to the Blood level but originate from the regions of the Large Intestine and Small Intestine. One formula uses Huang Jing Zi (Viticipolygami Semen) charred and powdered, taken with rice water, treating white discharge and also heart pain. Master Luo’s methods may utilize Shi Zao Tang (Ten Jujube Decoction), Shen Wan (Divine Pill), or Yu Zhu San (Jade Candle Powder), all usable, but harsh purgatives must be avoided. For excess patterns, this method applies; for Blood deficiency, Si Wu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) is modified; for Qi deficiency, Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), and Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) are alternated; for severe Dampness, Gu Chang Wan (Intestine-Securing Pill) is used: Chu Gen Bai Pi (Toosendan Fructus Cortex) (2 liang) charred, Hua Shi (Talcum) (1 liang), powdered and mixed with rice porridge to form pills. If Ministerial Fire is hyperactive, add a small amount of Chao Huang Bo (Phellodendri Cortex processed); if slippery/loose, add Long Gu (Fossilia Ossis Mastodi) and Chi Shi Zhi (Halloysit Rubra); if stagnant, add Kui Hua (Hibisci Mutabilis Flos); if irritable, add Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma). In cold months, add small amounts of Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) and Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata), adapting to circumstances, and one must abstain from rich flavors. Another formula uses Liang Jiang (Alpiniae Katsumadai Rhizoma), Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma) (each 2.5 qian, charred to ash), plus Chun Pi (Toosendan Fructus Cortex) (1 liang), powdered and pillified with rice porridge, taken with rice water. For Phlegm-Qi leukorrhea, use Cang Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Xiang Fu (Cyperi Rhizoma), Hua Shi (Talcum), Ge Fen (Concha Meretricis), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), and Fu Ling (Poria). A woman with white discharge and gouty pain was treated with Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Fu Ling (Poria), Chuan Xiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Nan Xing (Arisaematis Rhizoma) soaked in rice wash water, Huang Bo (Phellodendri Cortex) washed with wine and dried, and Niu Xi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix) washed with wine. A woman with head wind and nasal discharge above used Nan Xing (Arisaematis Rhizoma), Cang Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Jiu Qin (Scutellariae Radix processed with wine), Xin Yi (Magnoliae Flos), and Chuan Xiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma); below with white discharge, she used Nan Xing (Arisaematis Rhizoma), Cang Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Huang Bo (Phellodendri Cortex), Chao Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma charred), Hua Shi (Talcum), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), and Mu Li (Ostrea Concha). Formula for red and white discharge: Jiu Zhi Gui Ban (Carapax et Plastrum Testudinis processed with wine) (2 liang), Chao Bai (Scrophulariae Radix processed) (1 liang), Chao Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma processed) (1 qian), Zhi Zi (Gardeniae Fructus) (2.5 qian), powdered and pillified with wine paste, taken twice daily, 70 pills per dose. Pregnancy leukorrhea formula: Cang Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) (3 qian), Bai Zhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix) (2 qian), Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma) (charred 1.5 qian), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix) (charred 3 qian), Huang Bo (Phellodendri Cortex) (charred 1 qian), Bai Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) (2.5 qian), Chun Gen Pi (Toosendan Fructus Cortex) (charred 1.5 qian), Shan Zhu Yu (Corni Fructus) (1.5 qian). To treat phlegm-binding leukorrhea, use Xiao Wei Dan (Small Stomach Pill), swallowing several pills with saliva between meals; after stagnation opens, tonics are appropriate: Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (1 liang), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix) (5 qian), Hong Bai Kui Hua (Hibisci Mutabilis Flos red and white) (0.5 qian 2 fen), Bai Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) (7.5 qian), powdered and pillified with steamed bread dough, taken on an empty stomach with Si Wu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) decoction, 20 pills. White discharge requires Hua Shi (Talcum), Nan Xing (Arisaematis Rhizoma), Huang Bo (Phellodendri Cortex), and Tiao Qin (Scutellariae Radix). Gu Chang Wan (Intestine-Securing Pill) treats dampness-induced diarrhea, bloody stool, and leukorrhea, removing chronic gastrointestinal accumulation; it dries and descends dampness but should not be used alone. Depending on the pattern, decoct Chu Bai Pi (Toosendan Fructus Cortex) charred and powdered, pillified with paste. Another formula, cool and drying: Chu Bai Pi (Toosendan Fructus Cortex) (4 liang), Hua Shi (Talcum) (2 liang), powdered and pillified with rice porridge. Leukorrhea fundamentally stems from damp-heat. Bai Kui Hua (White Hibiscus Flower) treats white discharge; Chi Kui Hua (Red Hibiscus Flower) treats red discharge. For frequent and chronic leukorrhea, lifting and raising methods should be combined with damp-heat clearing herbs; for irritable patients, add Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma).
