Nocturnal emission is primarily attributed to Heat. Spermatorrhea (slippery essence discharge) and leukorrhea (vaginal discharge) are treated with the same method as nocturnal emission, using Qingdai (Indigo Naturalis), Haishi (Aragonite), and Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex). If caused by internal injury to Qi and Blood, leading to an inability to secure and retain, Ba Wu Tang (Eight Substance Decoction) modified should be taken with Chun Gen Wan (Toona Seed Pill).
When caused by excessive thinking, the disease resides in the Heart; it is appropriate to calm the Spirit and tonify simultaneously. Cold causes firmness and coagulation, while Heat causes flow and circulation; therefore, spermatorrhea is primarily attributed to Heat, using Chao Bai (Fried Phellodendri Cortex), Gafen (Calx Concha Tridacnae), and Qingdai (Indigo Naturalis); for nocturnal emission, Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) is added.
Nocturnal emission accompanied by turbid urine, occurring intermittently, indicates Heart Deficiency. Zhenzhu Fen Wan (Pearl Powder Pill) combined with Dingzhi Wan (Calm Spirit Pill) from the *Jufang* (Prescriptions of the Imperial Medical Bureau) is indicated. Another formula is Bushen Wan (Kidney Tonifying Pill): Chenpi (Tangerine Peel, 0.5 liang), Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex, fried, 1.5 liang), Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix, 1 liang), Baiguiban (Testudo Carapax et Plastrum, wine-processed, 1.5 liang), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, 2 qian; not used in spring and summer). The above are ground into powder and formed into pills using ginger juice paste.
Those who overwork their mind, such as Zheng Shulu, in his early twenties, devoted himself to civil service examinations, studying at night until the fourth watch without stopping. Suddenly he fell ill in bed; whenever his yin organ touched an object, he dreamed of sexual intercourse and experienced spermatorrhea, but if suspended in air, no dream occurred. His diet decreased daily, and he suffered from fatigue and shortness of breath. This was because excessive mental effort caused both Ministerial Fire and Sovereign Fire to arise, preventing sleep at night, causing Blood to fail to return to the Kidney. Consequently, Kidney Water became insufficient, and Fire attacked due to Yin Deficiency, entering the Lower Jiao and stirring the Essence Chamber. Thus, essence could not gather and store, but tended to escape. Therefore, during sleep, due to contact of the yin organ, rebellious Qi invaded, leading to dreams of intercourse. Treatment involved tonifying the Heart and calming the Spirit superiorly, regulating the Spleen and Stomach to raise Yang middlemost, and using formulas to benefit essence, generate Yin, and secure Yang inferiorly. Within three months, the illness resolved.
In cases where one is affected by Yin Evil, such as the son of Vice-Marshal Jiang, who had dreams every night, I was invited to examine him. For two consecutive days, upon palpating the pulse and observing his movements and demeanor, he never raised his head, only looking down improperly at people. This was likely due to mutual attraction of Yin Evil. Upon questioning, he refused to speak of the ghostly forms he encountered. Asking the servants who accompanied him, they revealed that one day he went to a temple, saw a statue of a maid-servant, and rubbed his hand against its body. Three or five days later, he fell ill with this condition. Consequently, someone was sent into the temple to destroy the statue, and it was found that the mud in the lower abdomen area was wet; his illness then healed.
