A woman, whenever she became pregnant, would inevitably miscarry around the third month. Her pulse was large and powerless on the left hand, and rough (Se) when pressed heavily, indicating a deficiency of blood. Since she was in the prime of her youth, only the middle Qi (Middle Jiao energy) needed to be tonified, allowing the blood to naturally flourish and nourish. At that time, it was early summer, so she was instructed to take one qian of Huangqin powder with thickly decocted Baizhu Tang. After taking dozens of doses, the pregnancy was preserved and she gave birth successfully. Reflecting on this, miscarriages due to internal heat combined with deficiency are more common in principle. The daily accumulation of heat and deficiency should be distinguished by severity. Generally, upon reaching three months of pregnancy, the meridians correspond to Ministerial Fire (Shang Huo), which is why miscarriage is prone to occur; otherwise, why are Huangqin, Shu Ai, and E'jiao used as fetal-anchoring medicines? For women, pregnancy is verified at three months after menstruation ceases. The method involves taking raw Chuanxiong powder, mixed with thick rice soup on an empty stomach, one spoonful; slight movement in the abdomen indicates pregnancy. Before delivery, one should clear heat and nourish blood. For parturients in the eighth or ninth month of pregnancy who experience panting due to fetal qi reversing upward caused by fire, quickly administer powdered Tiaoqin (Coptis chinensis) and Xiangfu, mixed with liquid. Select the heavy pieces of Tiaoqin soaked in water. To secure the fetus: Dihuang (half qian), Danggui shenwei (Danggui root and tail), Renshen, Baishaoyao, Chenpi (each one qian), Baizhu (one and a half qian), Huangqin, Chuanxiong (each half qian), Huanglian, Chao Bai (Chao Baiziren/Fried Biota Seed, each a small amount), Gancao (three fen), Sangshang Yang'er Teng (Seven-leaf round type, i.e., Jin Yin Teng/Honeysuckle Stem), Nuomi (Fourteen grains). The above herbs are chopped and decocted for administration. For blood deficiency causing unrest, use E'jiao; for pain, use Suosha (Amomum villosum). Shuntai Wan (Fetal-Binding Pill) is taken in the eighth and ninth months: Huangqin (one liang in summer, seven liang in spring/autumn, half liang in winter, fried with wine), Chenpi (one liang), Baizhu (two liang, avoid fire), Fuling (seven and a half qian, avoid fire). The above are ground into powder and formed into pills using congee. Shuntai Yin (Fetal-Binding Decoction): Dafupi (Three qian), Renshen (half qian), Chenpi (half qian), Baizhu (one liang), Baishaoyao (one qian), Zisu jingye (Perilla stem and leaf, one qian), Zhigancao (Roasted Licorice Root, three fen), Danggui shenwei (one qian). Alternatively, add Zhike and Suosha. Prepare as one dose, adding five leaves of green onion and seven tips of Yangyang tree leaves. Decoct and take before meals. Take over ten doses in the eighth and ninth months for great efficacy. Add Huanglian in summer, not in winter; add Chuanxiong in spring. Adjust according to other syndromes. For the ninth month: Huangqin (one liang, reduce dosage for those with cold constitution or weakness), Zhike (Stir-fried seven and a half qian), Baizhu (one liang), Huashi (Talcum, seven and a half qian). Ten days before term, if urine output is low, add this herb. Grind the above into powder, form pills with congee, size of Sophora seeds. Take thirty pills per dose with hot soup on an empty stomach. Do not overdose to avoid damaging Yuan Qi. Add two fen of Zhigancao, decoct, and take before meals; also called Shuntai Yin. Dasheng San (Life-Reaching Powder) is taken starting from the ninth month; taking thirty to fifty doses is acceptable, resulting in no abdominal pain and easy delivery: Huangqin, Renshen, Baizhu, Huashi, Zhike, Huangyangtou, Xiangfumii, Chenpi, Gancao, Dafupi, Zisu, Baishaoyao. Add Chuanxiong in spring; double Renshen and Baizhu for Qi deficiency; double Xiangfu and Chenpi for Qi excess; double Danggui and Dihuang for Blood deficiency; double Zisu for robust physique; double Huanglian for irritability; double Huangqin for excessive heat; double Huashi and add Banxia for damp-phlegm; double Shanzha for food stagnation; double Huangyangtou for postprandial hunger; add Huangqin for heat (also in summer); add Banxia for phlegm; add Muxiang and Guigui for abdominal pain, monitored by Huangqin; do not use Huangqin in winter. Antatai Wan (Fetal-Anchoring Pill): Baizhu, Huangqin, Chao Qu (Fried Medicated Leaven), formed into pills with congee. Huangqin anchors the fetus; it acts on the Upper and Middle Jiao, descending fire. Suosha anchors the fetus and treats pain because it moves Qi. For prenatal fetal anchoring, Baizhu and Huangqin are excellent herbs. Chongweizi (Leonurus japonicus seed) invigorates blood and moves Qi, possessing the subtle effect of nourishing Yin, hence named Yimucao (Motherwort). It removes stagnation before birth and prevents deficiency after birth, as it contains tonification within its moving action. In the fourth or fifth month of pregnancy, if sudden severe abdominal cramping occurs, burn fourteen Jujubes to char, grind into powder, and take with children's urine. For restless fetus, or merely lower back pain, or fetus turning upwards pressing on the heart, or continuous bleeding, use Aiyè (Mugwort Leaf), size of a chicken egg, with four sheng of wine, boiled down to two sheng, divided into two doses; highly effective. For fetal movement with abdominal pain where the fetus has died without knowledge, taking this medicine will anchor the fetus if alive, or expel it if dead: Danggui (four liang), Chuanxiong (nine liang), wine (four sheng), boiled down to three sheng for administration. When fetal qi is disordered and rushes upward causing epigastric and abdominal fullness and pain, it is called Zixuan (Fetal Suspension). This formula also treats panic and qi knotting during labor leading to prolonged delivery. For pregnancy cough, fry Beimu (Fritillaria) into powder, mix with sugar paste to form pills, suck slowly at night for best results. For pregnancy food stagnation, medication is difficult; only Muxiang Wan and Baizhu San are safe; dietary restriction is necessary. When conception occurs after menstrual blood gathers, there may be unstable fetal qi, slight abdominal pain, waist pain, or loss of appetite. Postpartum month (Zuoru): Danggui whole (one qian), Chuanxiong (one qian), Baizhi (five fen), Tiaoqin (one qian), Chenpi (one qian), Xiangfu (one qian), Gancao (three fen). Upon first feeling pregnant, wear one liang of Xionghuang sewn in a red pouch to change female fetus to male; another method: bind a bow and arrow to the waist initially, remove after two months, changing female to male; secret method not transmitted. Taileu (Fetal Leakage) belongs to Qi deficiency, Blood deficiency, or Blood heat. For pregnancy fetal anchoring, boil two liang of Damai (Barley) in one and a half zhan of water, decoct to one zhan, take warm, divided into three doses; or mix with honey. Another formula: Siwu Tang plus Niuxi, Pengzhu, Paoguigui (Prepared Cinnamon Twig), Honghua (Safflower) in equal parts. Use seven parts water, decoct to half, take on empty stomach. Another formula: Xiangfu Zi (Cyperi Rhizome) two qian, Renchen, Fuling, Gancao (one qian each). Add Dingxiang (Clove) if preferring pungent taste, grind into powder and take dry. Pregnancy cravings are due to deficiency of one organ. For example, if Liver is deficient, it can only nourish the fetus and has no surplus function. Unable to nourish the Liver, Liver deficiency causes craving for sour foods. For fetal heat near term, use Sanbu Wan plus stir-fried Xiangfu and Baishaoyao, formed into pills with steamed bread. To suppress heat further, use Sanbu Wan made with Dihuang paste. In the eighth and ninth months of pregnancy, must regulate Qi using Zhike and Zisu stems. A woman near thirty years old, pregnant for two months, suffered from vomiting, dizziness, and vertigo, unbearable. Medicines containing Renshen, Baizhu, Xiong, Chenpi, Fuling made her condition worse over five to seven days. Pulse was wiry, stronger and weaker on the left. This is Ezu disease. Provoked by anger, Liver Qi reversed and carried fetal Qi. Tonifying with Renshen and Baizhu was highly inappropriate. Only administer twenty-four Yiqing Pills with Fuling Tang. After five doses, slightly relieved. Pulse showed slight rapidity, dry mouth and bitter taste, sour mouth after eating little porridge. Due to lingering stagnant Qi in the diaphragm not yet cleared, instruct to take fifty Yiqing Pills with decoction of Chuanxiong, Chenpi, Zhizi, Shengjiang, Fuling. After ten-plus doses, remaining symptoms subsided, food intake reached half of normal, felt hungry easily after eating due to uncalmed Liver heat. Then take twenty Yiqing Pills with plain water. Peaceful after twenty days. Palpating pulse, both hands were peaceful but left was very weak; this fetus must miscarry. Now that Liver Qi is calm, Renshen and Baizhu can be used. Thus, use initial Renshen, Baizhu etc. to tonify, preventing deficiency after miscarriage. After one day of taking, the fetus miscarried naturally, yet smoothly without incident. A woman, thin and irritable, originally without heat, pregnant for three months in midsummer, thirsty for water. Given Siwu Tang plus Huangqin, Chenpi, Sheng Gancao, Mutong. After several doses, she was stable. Later gave birth, at two years old suddenly developed malaria. Likely due to insufficient medicine during pregnancy, fetal toxin not eliminated. If sores or scabies appeared, the illness would heal itself, verifying this. Huangqin is the sacred medicine for fetal anchoring. Laypeople do not know this, considering it cold, and dare not use it, claiming warm medicines can nourish the fetus. They do not realize that before delivery, one must clear heat. Clearing heat allows blood to follow meridians without reckless flow, thus nourishing the fetus. Using Siwu Tang before delivery: for those with Blood deficiency and emaciation, do not use Baishaoyao as it damages the Liver. For robust individuals, it can be used. Difficult labor is due to Qi and Blood deficiency. "Gezhi Yulun" details this extensively. "Daquan Liangfang" has medicines to choose from. Causes of difficult labor include lack of caution in the eighth and ninth months, or Qi stagnation preventing transport. After delivery, the mother must have strength. Let a woman sit on a bed, have the parturient lean against her, sit for two or three hours. Wait for lochia to finish before lying down; otherwise, evil blood entering the heart leads to death. Also, moxibustion treats difficult labor. On the tip of the woman's right little toe, use moxa cone size of wheat grain, moxa five zhuans, then delivery. Cuisheng Fang (Labor-Inducing Formula): Baizhi, Baicaoshuang (Burnt Grass Ash), Huashi ground into powder, taken with Xiong Gui Tang. Also treats retained placenta, mixed with Ginger Juice or Wine. "Funu Daquan Liangfang" has other medicines. Yichan Fang (Easy Delivery Formula): Use Yimucacao, harvested with roots in June, dried and ground into powder, honey pills size of bullet. Dissolve in warm water at onset of labor, or take as paste; also excellent. Cuisheng Fang: Baizhi, Baicaoshuang equal parts, ground into powder. At time of delivery, take with white soup. Mixing with YiYuan San is especially good. Also treats transverse or breech presentation. Mix with child's urine and vinegar, soak in boiling water. One dose suffices. Instantly saves two lives. Another formula: Cheqianzi ground into powder, take two qian with wine. Breech presentation with fetal death in utero: Danggui powder with wine. Cuisheng Fang: Decoct Foshou San, mix with YiYuan San, take temporarily. Cunjinsan treats difficult labor: Burn one worn pen tip to ash, grind fine, mix with one zhan of Lotus Root Juice for immediate delivery. If parturient is weak, fearing Lotus Root Juice induces wind, hold in silver cup, heat over fire and drink. Another formula: Mix Oil, Honey, Urine evenly to treat difficult labor. Or mix with Yimucacao powder, especially good. Difficult labor formula: Suosha, Vinegar-boiled Xiangfu, Zhike, Gancao, Huashi, taken with soup. Fine and even pulse indicates easy delivery; floating, large, and slow pulse indicates Qi scattering and difficult labor. Childbirth is like dragging a boat over a weir. Niuxi Gao and Dihuang Gao also treat difficult labor. Diarrhea at onset of labor: Zhizi (Gardenia) any amount, burnt to ash, fine powder, mix one bi with hot water on empty stomach. Severe cases, no more than five doses. In cold month of delivery, fullness below navel, hands cannot touch cold, enters birth canal. Take Zhang Zhongjing's Lamb Soup, two doses cure. Cuisheng Fang: Swallow Ma Binglang (Areca Nut) just before delivery, baby born shortly after, held out in palms. Difficult labor often seen in depressed, comfortable, wealthy people fed luxuriously; rare among poor. Ancient formula Shoutai Yin may not be the ultimate theory. My clan sister suffered from difficult labor, inducing abortion every time. I pitied her greatly. Seeing her fat body but doing needlework, knowing Qi deficiency from long sitting, Qi not moving becoming weaker. The fetus in sac, due to mother's Qi deficiency, cannot move itself. Must tonify mother's Qi, then fetus strong and easy to deliver. Instructed her to come when pregnant five to six months. Added Qi-tonifying medicines to Zisu Yin from "Daquan Liangfang", gave dozens of doses. Successfully had a son quickly. Based on this formula, adjusted according to mother's constitution and season. All who took it responded well. No pain at delivery, mother also healthy. Named this formula Dasheng San.
