Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Qianchuanxiong, 1.2 qian) Danggui Radix (Danggui, 5 qian) Zingiberis Rhizoma Ustam (Zhiheijiang, prepared black ginger, 0.5 qian) Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Praeparata cum Melle (Zhigancao, honey-fried licorice, 0.3 qian) Persicae Semen (Taoren, peach kernel, peeled and pitted, ground, 11 grains)
Take the above herbs, add one cup of water and half a cup of aged wine, decoct until one cup of liquid remains. Take while slightly warm.
The name "Shenghua" is established based on the efficacy and function of the herbs. After childbirth, the residual blood should dissipate, and new blood should be generated. If one focuses solely on dissipating old blood, new blood will not be generated; if one focuses solely on generating new blood, residual blood will stagnate. Examining the properties of these herbs: Chuanxiong Rhizoma, Danggui Radix, and Persicae Semen are good at treating residual blood and specifically promote the generation of new blood. Assisted by Zingiberis Rhizoma Ustam and Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Praeparata cum Melle, they guide the first three herbs into the Liver and Spleen meridians to generate blood and regulate Qi. Nothing is better than this. This is what is meant by "tonification within blood-moving, and generation within blood-resolving." It is truly the sacred medicine for postpartum conditions.
When pregnancy reaches the eighth or ninth month, prepare two or three doses in advance. When the amniotic sac ruptures, quickly decoct and take one dose. Immediately after the fetus is delivered, take it. Whether it is a normal delivery or a miscarriage, even for strong and healthy parturients, taking two or three doses is advisable so that lochia naturally dissipates and new blood naturally generates. However, it must be decocted and taken continuously within one or two hours of the first birth, before any food intake. Since lochia resides in the Lower Jiao (Lower Burner), frequent and multiple doses are necessary to facilitate the resolution of lochia and the generation of new blood, thereby avoiding severe complications such as Blood Fainting (Xueyun). For those with inherently weak constitutions before pregnancy, or suffering from fatigue and exhaustion after childbirth, two additional doses should be taken to prevent fainting and lethargy. Taking only one dose daily as usual cannot rescue critical depletion of Qi and Blood. Even for extremely deficient patients presenting with critical symptoms, or those who suffered abortion due to heat diseases, or those experiencing fever and headache due to severe overwork, if abdominal masses and pain persist despite feeling slightly relieved after four or five doses, this formula should still be continued.
Some cases arise because the mother lacks strength to expel the placenta immediately after delivering the infant. Some cases occur because too much time has passed or exposure to cold air causes blood vessels to become congealed and obstructed, leading to retained placenta. Some cases result from inherent weakness before pregnancy leading to blood depletion and stagnant placenta. In all such cases, urgently administer one or two doses of Shenghua Tang (Birth-Transforming Decoction), concurrently服用 Yimu Gao (Motherwort Paste), followed by Cervus Cornu Carbonisatum (Deer Horn Ash). This will strengthen the blood and harmonize the abdomen, causing the placenta to pass naturally. The world often uses Jikun Dan (Ji Kun Pill), also known as Huisheng Dan (Life-Returning Pill), which specifically attacks blood stasis to expel the placenta. Although it shows rapid effects, it inevitably damages the Yuan Qi (Original Qi); caution is advised. (Method for preparing Yimu Gao: After the Dragon Boat Festival and before Minor Heat, take fresh Motherwort Herba, decoct into paste using a copper pot, store in a porcelain bottle without letting air escape. When needed, mix with Shenghua Tang for miraculous effects.)
In cases where the infant is delivered but the placenta is retained, the parturient must not lie down. First, cut the umbilical cord and weigh it down with a straw shoe (to prevent retraction or excessive bleeding). In cold months, help the parturient to bed, support her to sit upright, cover her with a quilt, place a fire basket inside the quilt, and replace with heated cotton garments to warm the abdomen. After the placenta is expelled, to prevent deficiency, continue taking two or three doses of Shenghua Tang. Do not dislike the frequency of medication; significant effects will naturally follow.
