Chuanxiong (1.5 qian) Danggui (3 qian) Chishao (stir-fried with wine, 1 qian) Fuling (1 qian) Muxiang (0.3 qian) Huanglian (stir-fried with ginger juice, 0.4 qian) Gancao (roasted, 0.4 qian) Zhike (0.5 qian) Chenpi (0.3 qian)
The above herbs are decocted with one zhan of water until reduced to half a zhan. Take on an empty stomach.
Fanmen refers to xu fan (deficiency-related vexation) and man men (fullness and oppression). Xu fan is caused by the depletion of blood and fluids, leading to the heart spirit failing to remain anchored. It is appropriate to urgently administer Dushen Tang (Ginseng Decoction). Man men is characterized by stagnation in the chest and diaphragm, where lochia attacks the heart. It is suitable to use Shenghua Tang (Invigorating Blood Decoction). Administer 0.2 qian of Muxiang ground in water as a suspension. If the deficiency is severe, add Renshen. For these two conditions, if one mistakenly uses harsh substances such as Zhike, Xiangfu, or Wuyao, it will damage the primordial qi and exacerbate the disease.
After delivery, one should close the eyes and sit for a while before getting into bed, using bedding to support the body. In summer months, roll up a bamboo mat and use several pillows for support. If one cannot maintain this posture themselves, have an experienced woman assist. One must not lie down immediately to sleep. Frequently massage from the heart region to the navel at will, to facilitate the downward flow of lochia. Place a basin of vinegar in the delivery room and throw red-hot charcoal into it to prevent xue yun (blood fainting due to postpartum hemorrhage).
Warm a small garment on the abdomen and replace it to keep warm. Even in summer, do not cover oneself with only a thin quilt; avoid abdominal coldness which causes pain from blood clots.
At the end of winter and beginning of spring, when the weather is severely cold, the delivery room should be closed tightly and gaps sealed. Fire sources should be placed around to keep the interior warm and harmonious, preventing other illnesses. However, incense burning should be avoided to prevent the leakage of true qi.
Immediately after birth, solid food should not be consumed; instead, take two or three doses of Shenghua Tang. If extremely hungry, first drink one zhan of white rice soup, then eat white porridge. For ten days, food should be bland; cold drinks are strictly forbidden. Eggs may be eaten after half a month, but must be boiled open to prevent difficulty in digestion due to spleen deficiency. After a full month, pork and mutton can be eaten, but in moderation. Although wine promotes blood circulation, its nature is fierce and volatile, so it should not be consumed in excess.
For seven days, combing and washing are inappropriate, especially foot bathing, lest wind and dampness invade and cause diseases to arise. Day and night, someone should accompany and attend to the patient to prevent fright, which could lead to various complications.
Speech should be cautious; do not talk excessively, as this depletes primordial qi. Do not generate anger or depression due to love or hate, because the middle qi is weak; both factors can cause illness.
