Postpartum wind-stroke arises from the injury to blood and qi during childbirth, damaging the zang-fu organs. If the body has not yet recovered and one rises early to labor, qi deficiency occurs, allowing wind-pathogen to invade through the deficiency. The pathogen lodges in the skin and meridians, causing pain, bi-syndrome (painful obstruction), emaciation, weakness, inability to bear weight, and shortness of breath. Generally, if tendons and vessels are combined with cold, they become spasmodic and deviated; if combined with dampness, they become flaccid, weak, and deficient. If the pathogen enters the various zang-fu organs, it causes mental confusion, fright, and palpitations, manifesting as diseases corresponding to the injured zang-fu and meridians.
Guo Jizhong discussed: "What is postpartum wind-stroke?" He answered: "Within five to seven days after childbirth, forcing oneself out of bed, or within a month engaging in sexual intercourse, or harboring worry and anger which disturbs the harmonious middle, or eating raw and hard foods that damage the zang-fu organs. At the onset of illness, there is dryness in the eyes, trismus (lockjaw), muscle twitching, gradually progressing to stiffness and rigidity of the waist and spine. This is incurable; it is man-made, not accidental wind-stroke."
Xue Lizhai stated: "If the aforementioned syndrome is caused by external pathogens, with insufficient form and qi but excess pathogenic qi, the primary treatment should be tonifying primordial qi, assisted slightly by herbs treating the disease. If one labors without rest or engages in intercourse within a month, both form and qi are insufficient; pure tonification of primordial qi is required, and many will recover. Misusing wind-dispelling herbs will hasten danger."
Mr. Danxi said: "For postpartum wind-stroke presenting with deviation of the mouth and eye, one must first vigorously tonify blood and qi, then treat phlegm. Treatment should differentiate the abundance or scarcity of blood and qi based on the pulse at the left and right hands. One must not treat it as ordinary wind-stroke using diaphoretic wind-dispelling herbs."
Danggui San (Angelica Decoction)

Treats wind-stroke with stiff back and trismus, or irritability, heaviness of head/face/extremities, itching, and fixed gaze. These are all wind-stroke due to deficiency-cold.
Use 3 sheng of black beans, stir-fry until cooked. While hot, soak in 3 sheng of clear wine. Seal tightly for a long time, remove beans, divide into 3 doses. Cover with clothes to induce sweating; recovery occurs when the body becomes moist. This defends against wind-pathogen and dissipates blood stasis.
Hua Tuo Yu Feng San (Master Hua's Wind-Healing Powder)

Jing Jie Sui (Herba Schizonepetae, lightly roasted and powdered)
Take 3 qian per dose, mixed with Dou Lin Jiu (Soybean-Dripping Wine) or Tong Zi Xiao Bian (Child's Urine). For trismus, pry teeth and administer; for gum-lock, instill into nose. Effect is divine. Ancient texts praise this formula highly; also known as Ru Sheng San (Like-Sage Powder), Yi Nian Jin (One-Touch Gold), or Zai Sheng Dan (Rebirth Pill). A woman slept long after childbirth; upon waking, she was dizzy as if drunk and unconscious. Physicians used this medicine plus Jiao Jia San, advising sleep after ingestion and scratching the head with the left hand. It worked exactly as predicted.
Jiao Jia San (Interlaced Decoction)

First, stir-fry Sheng Jiang residue with Sheng Di Huang juice; then stir-fry Sheng Di Huang residue with Sheng Jiang juice. Dry slightly, roast, and grind into fine powder. Take 3 qian per dose, taken down with warm wine. Suitable for ordinary abdominal pain; indispensable postpartum.
Ji Wei Shang Dan (Supreme Rescue Pill)

Grind the first four ingredients evenly in silver or ceramic vessel, stir-fry lightly without burning, grind extremely fine again. Add remaining herbs, mix well. Form pills with Sheng Di Huang juice, size of Sophora seeds. Take 20 pills per dose, washed down with Dang Gui Tang (Angelica Decoction).
Wind generated from extreme postpartum deficiency: Women rely primarily on Ying-blood. Excessive bleeding leaves Qi unsupported, causing cyanotic lips, cold flesh, sweating, dizziness, coma, and imminent death. This is wind from extreme deficiency. Emergency administration of Ji Wei Shang Dan is required; using wind-dispelling herbs is an error.
Xue Lizhai stated: "For the aforementioned syndrome belonging to dual deficiency of blood and qi, use Shi Quan Da Bu Tang (Ten Significant Tonifying Decoction); if ineffective, add Fu Zi (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata) and Gou Teng (Uncariae Ramulus cum Uncis). If Liver channel blood deficiency, use Xiao Yao San (Free and Easy Wanderer Powder) plus Gou Teng. The Classics state: The splendor of the Spleen manifests in the lips; the fluid of the Heart is sweat. If Heart and Spleen are extremely deficient, urgently use Shen Fu Tang (Ginseng and Aconite Decoction) to rescue. A woman suffered the aforementioned syndrome; others used tonics, resulting in cold extremities, spontaneous sweating, diarrhea, borborygmus, and abdominal pain. I diagnosed Yang-Qi deficiency-cold, used Liu Jun Zi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction) with Jiang (Ginger) and Fu Zi (Prepared Aconite Root) increased to 5 qian each; ineffective. Then used Shen (Ginseng) and Fu Zi (Aconite) at 1 liang each, which was effective. After a while without medication, borborygmus and pain returned. I moxa Guan Yuan (CV4) 100 moxa-cones and administered Shi Quan Da Bu Tang, only then did it work."
