After childbirth, excessive blood loss leads to the sudden depletion of Ying Blood (nutritive blood), causing Wei Qi (defensive qi) to lose its master and gather exclusively in the Lungs, resulting in panting. This is named "Lone Yang and Absent Yin" and is difficult to treat. Chen Wuyue stated: Panting urgency after childbirth is indeed fearful; if it is due to failed blood steaming upward to the Lungs, Duoming Dan can be used. If Ying Blood is suddenly exhausted, a large dose of Xiong Tang may also save the patient. Xue Lizhai said: For the aforementioned conditions, if they are due to Spleen and Lung deficiency-cold, Buyi Zhongqi Tang with Pao Jiang (Roasted Ginger) and Rou Gui (Cinnamon Bark) should be used. If Yang Qi is deficient and collapsing, add Fuzi (Aconite). If stasis-blood enters the Lungs, Erwei Rensu Yin should be used urgently.
A postpartum woman presented with panting, spontaneous sweating, cold hands and feet, and frequently protected her umbilical and abdominal area with her hands. This indicated Yang Qi deficiency and collapse. She was treated with Shenfu Tang, recovering after four doses.
