Dingxiang (Clove), Shidi (Persimmon Calyx), Huixiang (Fennel), Ganjiang (Dried Ginger), Liangjiang (Galangal Root), Chenpi (Tangerine Peel).
Mainly treats deficiency-cold in the chest. For those with persistent hiccups: According to analysis, when fire flares upward, it is due to rebellious Qi rushing up; when cold coagulates, it is because Qi stagnation fails to move, also rebelling upward to cause hiccups. Taking the two aromatic herbs (Huixiang, Dingxiang) opens the knot in the Upper Jiao; taking the two ginger varieties (Ganjiang, Liangjiang) warms the meridians of the Middle Earth. Chenpi has the function of penetrating from top to bottom; Shidi has the power of guiding the meridian and treating according to the principle. Thus, the Yang returns in the cold valley, and rebellion turns into smoothness.
Ruxiang (Frankincense), Liuhuang (Sulfur), Aye (Mugwort Leaf).
Mainly treats Yin-cold hiccups. Use this to attack and劫 (seize/overcome) the pathogen. According to analysis, Liuhuang is the essence of benefiting Fire, which Yin-cold favors; Ruxiang is the master of promoting Qi circulation, suitable for stagnation. Furthermore, relying on the fragrant nature of Aye, the meridians and pathways are penetrated without exception. Since the nose connects with Heaven, smelling it allows Dry Metal to perform its duty, and the Yin-shade pathogen suddenly retreats three camps.
Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Root), Yichen (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba), Ganjiang (Dried Ginger).
Mainly treats Yin-Jaundice with cold extremities. Pulse is deep and slow. Spontaneous sweating below the waist.
Yichen (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Ganjiang (Dried Ginger), Renshen (Ginseng Radix).
Mainly treats Yin-Jaundice with abdominal pain. Spontaneous diarrhea. Or jaundice caused by internal cold injury. According to analysis, the above two formulas are generally designed for Yin-Jaundice. However, Sini Tang (Four Reversal Decoction) targets Shaoyin Cold, thus addressing spontaneous sweating below the waist; Lizhong Tang (Regulate the Middle Decoction) targets Taiyin Cold, thus removing spontaneous diarrhea and abdominal pain. A difference of a hair's breadth leads to a thousand miles' deviation; only those with clear insight can distinguish them.
Fuzi (One piece, prepared), Xicha (Fine Tea) (Three qian).
Mainly treats Yin-excess blocking Yang. Body heat, red face. Restlessness, inability to drink water. Pulse is deep and fine or hidden/faint. The Lesser Fire generates Qi, residing peacefully below. The Greater Fire consumes Qi. A single thread of Qi is in imminent danger. The power of Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig) and Ganjiang is still shallow. Only Fuzi acting alone has the greatest efficacy. It truly deserves to revive the dead. Named "Pili" (Thunderbolt) because the use of thunder lies in spring and summer. One metaphor illustrates the spreading of Yang warmth; another illustrates the vastness of its power. According to analysis, cases of death due to Yin-excess blocking Yang are everywhere.
Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Bai Fuling (Poria), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Baishao Yao (White Peony Root).
Mainly treats disease that has not resolved after passing through the stages. The person is weak, pulse is deficient. According to analysis, the illness has lasted long with residual pathogens unresolved, because Zhengqi (Upright Qi) is deficient and cannot subdue the pathogens. Using Renshen and the Three Whites (Baizhu, Baifuling, Baishaoyao) tonifies Zhengqi. Using Chaihu alone eliminates residual pathogens. This nourishes righteousness so that pathogens are naturally expelled, following the treatment method of the end stage.
