(The treatment methods are generally the same as for men, but differ when heat enters the Blood Chamber or during pregnancy and postpartum.)
When a woman contracts Cold Damage (Shanghan) while her menstrual flow is just beginning. She is lucid during the day. But speaks deliriously at night. This is called Heat Entering the Blood Chamber (a condition where pathogenic heat invades the uterus/blood chamber). (Use Xiaochaihu Tang [Minor Bupleurum Decoction] with added Shengdi Huang [Rehmanniae Radix], Mudan Pi [Moutan Cortex], Danggui Wei [Angelicae Sinensis Radix], and Zhike [Aurantii Fructus].) During pregnancy, if one contracts Cold Damage. The primary principle is to calm the fetus. One must not overuse diaphoresis (sweating) or purgation (downward draining). If there are exterior symptoms. (Use Qianghuo Chonghe Tang [Notopterygium Harmonizing Decoction] with added Danggui [Angelicae Sinensis Radix] and Shaoyao [Paeoniae Radix].) If there is dryness, thirst, and constipation. (Use Xiao Chengqi Tang [Minor Order the Qi Decoction]; the Dahuang [Rhei Radix et Rhizoma] must be stir-fried with wine.) If it is a direct transmission of cold pathogens (Zhizhong Hanzheng). (Use Lizhong Tang [Regulate the Middle Decoction] with added Guizhi [Cinnamomi Ramulus].) Methods to protect the fetus. (Mix Jingdini [Mud from the bottom of a well], Qingdai [Indigo Naturalis], and Fulonggan [Fired Long-stone Soil] in equal parts. Add a little flour. Mix with water. Apply to the area two cun below the umbilicus. Reapply when dry.) After childbirth, if one contracts Cold Damage. The blood and qi are deficient. Do not lightly use diaphoresis or purgation. If there are exterior symptoms. (Use Siwu Tang [Four Substances Decoction] with added Qianghuo [Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix], Ziyey [Perillae Folium], Cangzhu [Atractylodis Rhizoma], and Congtou [Allii Fistulosi Bulbus].) If there is dryness, thirst, and constipation. (Use Siwu Tang [Four Substances Decoction] with added Zhike [Aurantii Fructus], Jiuchao Dahuang [Rhei Radix et Rhizoma fried with wine], and Houpo [Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex].) If diaphoresis or purgation was excessive. It may transform into Yu Mao Hunmi (depression, dizziness, coma, and confusion). With muscle twitching and tremors. (Treat with Bazhen Tang [Eight Treasures Decoction] with added Ganjiang [Zingiberis Rhizoma].)
Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), Dazao (Jujubae Fructus)
In Taiyang Wind Strike (Taiyang Fengzhong). When the yang pulse floats. Fever arises spontaneously. When the yin pulse is weak. Sweat flows spontaneously. There is slight aversion to cold (Sese Ehan). Slight aversion to wind (Xixi Efeng). And mild fever like feathers covering (Xixi Fare). This formula is indicated. For spontaneous sweating. Caused by wind pathogens interfering with the Defensive Qi (Wei Qi). It is appropriate. Zhang Zhongjing considered resolving the muscle layer (Jieji) to be mild, while inducing sweating (Fahan) to be heavy. Therefore, after sweating, vomiting, or purging, body pain indicates consumption of body fluids. Even if exterior pathogens remain, only Guizhi Tang should be used to resolve the muscle layer. The *Neijing* states: "For wind invading internally, disperse with acrid flavors, astringe with sour flavors, and moderate with sweet flavors." Thus, Guizhi is the Sovereign (Jun) herb. Shaoyao is the Minister (Chen) herb. Gancao is the Assistant (Zuo) herb. Ginger and Jujube are the Envoy (Shi) herbs. Ginger and Jujube circulate the spleen's fluids and harmonize the Ying (Nutritive) and Wei (Defensive) levels. Mahuang Tang does not use ginger and jujube because its purpose is solely to induce sweating; it does not rely on transformation via these herbs, as fluids will naturally circulate. Guizhi Tang and Mahuang Tang were established for winter Cold Damage. They absolutely must not be used for spring warm diseases or summer heat diseases.
Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba), Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum)
It primarily treats Taiyang headache. Fever and body ache. Lower back pain. Joint pain. Aversion to cold. Anhidrosis (no sweat) and wheezing. Materia Medica states: "Light substances can remove excess/stagnation. Mahuang is such a substance." Guizhi branches can independently disperse pathogens. Therefore, it serves as the Minister herb. The *Neijing* states: "For cold invading internally, treat with sweet-hot substances, assist with acrid-bitter substances." Gancao is sweet and neutral. Xingren is sweet and bitter. They are used as Assistant herbs. As the classics say: "When the Liver suffers from urgency, eat sweet substances to moderate it." Furthermore, Guizhi Tang treats wind injuring the Wei level. In this case, the Wei is excess and the Ying is weak. Therefore, Shaoyao is added to harmonize the Ying blood. Mahuang Tang treats cold injuring the Ying level. In this case, the Ying is excess and the Wei is deficient. Therefore, Xingren is added to benefit/drain the Wei qi.
