The manifestations of Shanghan (Cold Damage) include headache and pain in the nape, stiffness of the waist and spine, bodily rigidity and urgency, surface heat with aversion to cold, absence of irritability, and no spontaneous sweating; or alternatively, pain in the head, face, and eyes, heat in the muscles, and dryness of the nose; or chest fullness with wheezing, slight coldness at the tips of the fingers and toes, and a pulse that is floating, rapid, and tight. These indicate pathogenic heat remaining at the exterior and are all indications for Ma Huang Tang (Ephedra Decoction) to induce sweating, or the use of Tianshui San (Sky Water Powder) and similar formulas is also excellent. One must avoid using ineffective medicines that only add to the harm.
Yiyuan San (also known as Tianshui San, or Taibai San) treats body heat, vomiting, diarrhea, borborygmus, and dysentery with red and white discharge; it treats strangury with obstruction, pain from long-strangury, and difficult urination, specifically focusing on stone strangury (Shi Lin). It clears accumulated cold and heat in the chest, greatly benefits essence and qi, unblocks the nine orifices and the fluids of the six fu organs, removes stagnation and accumulation, resolves water retention, stops thirst and benefits the middle jiao, eliminates irritability and heat, calms the mind, treats abdominal distension, pain, and oppression, tonifies the five zang organs, and strongly nourishes the qi of the spleen and kidney (referring here to the Kidney as an organ of Water, not the Stomach as an organ of Earth). It regulates internal injury and impotence, stabilizes the soul and spirit, tonifies the five labors and seven injuries, and addresses all forms of deficiency damage. It governs epilepsy with convulsions, palpitations, and forgetfulness, stops irritability and fullness, shortness of breath, and cough due to visceral injury, treats inability to ingest food, and muscle pain. It treats mouth ulcers and dental caries, clarifies the ears and eyes, strengthens sinews and bones, unblocks meridians, harmonizes qi and blood, aids digestion of food and drink, preserves true yuan, resolves toxic heat from various medicines, alcohol, and food, enables endurance of labor, hunger, thirst, and extreme temperatures, wards off injuries from various external and internal pathogens, and with long-term use, strengthens willpower, lightens the body, maintains youthfulness, and prolongs life. It also resolves summerheat, Shanghan, epidemics, damage from overeating or fasting, labor injury, sorrow, worry, anger, fright, infectious diseases, residual heat after sweating, relapse due to overexertion, and other ailments. It concurrently treats Lianggan Shanghan (simultaneous involvement of two meridians in Cold Damage), promoting the free flow of stagnation throughout the body, harmonizing qi for recovery. For women, it promotes lactation and facilitates childbirth, and treats postpartum fluid depletion, blood deficiency, severe yin-deficiency heat, and all related syndromes, making it suitable for such cases. It also cures mastitis, breast inflammation, or impending breast swelling; frequent administration leads to cure. It is indeed a miraculous and immortal medicine.
