Take half the dose of Dachengqi Tang (Major Order the Qi Decoction) and administer to purge. In cases where there is unceasing diarrhea due to heat binding with the interior (Xiere Li), or chest binding (Jie Xiong) accompanied by jaundice, use Yinchen (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba) 5 fen, combined with Xiantang Decoction (Decoction for Depressing the Chest) 3 fen and Dachengqi Tang 2 fen to purge. For jaundice caused by simultaneous contraction of exterior and interior pathogens (Lianggan), add Huanglian Jiedu Tang (Coptis Decoction for Resolving Toxicity) one dose and urgently purge. If there is only slight sweating on the head, free urination, and mild yellowing of the skin, this indicates slight damp-heat; this formula is suitable.
Zhizi Bopi Tang (Gardenia and Phellodendron Bark Decoction)
Dashanzhizi (Fructus Gardeniae, 15 pieces) Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, 1 qian) Huangbai (Cortex Phellodendri, 0.5 liang)
Cut the herbs into sizes resembling hemp seeds. This dosage is divided into two doses. For each dose, use three zhan of water, boil down to one zhan, extract the juice by squeezing, and divide into three portions to be taken throughout the day.
Da Xiexiong Tang (Major Decoction for Depressing the Chest)
Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei) Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas) (each 3 qian) Gansui Mo (Radix Kansui Powder, 3 zi bi)
Cut the herbs into sizes resembling hemp seeds. One dose is divided into two administrations. For each administration, use one zhan of water, boil Dahuang until reduced to six-tenths, add Mangxiao, boil for one or two boils, then squeeze out the juice. Add 1.5 zi bi of Gansui powder and take warm. If bowel movement is not smooth, take again. If there is heat but difficulty in defecation, adjust the dosage according to judgment.
Da Xiexiong Wan (Major Pill for Depressing the Chest)
Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei, 0.5 liang) Tingli (Semen Lepidii seu Descurainiae, 3 qian, slightly stir-fried) Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas, 1 fen) Xingren (Semen Armeniacae Amarum, 12 pieces, stir-fried in ash until color changes.)
First grind Dahuang into fine powder, pound Tingli separately, sieve it, then grind Xingren and Mangxiao into a paste. Mix and form pills the size of quail eggs. Take one pill per dose, adding 3 zi bi of Gansui powder, half a spoonful of white honey, and one zhan of water. Boil until reduced to half a zhan and take warm. Bowel movement should occur after about one night. If no bowel movement occurs, take again.
Xiao Xiexiong Tang (Minor Decoction for Depressing the Chest)
Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae Preparatum, 4 qian, washed with decoction, used whole, not cut) Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens, 2 qian, sliced) Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis, 2 qian, cut) Gualou Shi (Fructus Trichosanthis, half of a large fruit, only cut the shell, do not cut the seed. Using only the seed is incorrect.)
Use three zhan of water to boil Gualou Shi to obtain one and a half zhan of juice. Add the remaining herbs and boil until reduced to one zhan. Squeeze out the juice and take warm in two doses. Continue until efficacy is achieved.
Dahuang Huanglian Xiexin Tang (Rhubarb, Coptis, and Scutellaria Decoction for Draining the Heart)
Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei) Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis) Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae) (each 1 fen). Another method adds 1 fen of Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens), which is very effective.
Zhizi Tang (Gardenia Decoction)
Dazhizi (Fructus Gardeniae, 7 pieces, crushed) Douchi (Semen Sojae Preparatum, 0.5 he)
Use two zhan of water to boil Zhizi until reduced to one and a half zhan. Add Douchi and boil until reduced to half a zhan. Squeeze out the juice and take warm.
For all formulas containing additions, Zhizi must be boiled first.
If vomiting occurs, stop subsequent doses. None of the various Zhizi Tang formulas are intended to induce vomiting. Because dryness and heat are severely constrained, sudden attack by the medicine cannot open the constraint, leading to the eruption of constraint and vomiting. Since vomiting disperses the constraint, qi flow becomes smooth and body fluids circulate freely; therefore, further administration is unnecessary.
Zhizi Houpo Tang (Gardenia and Magnolia Bark Decoction)
Dazhizi (Fructus Gardeniae, 7 pieces) Houpo (Cortex Magnoliae Officinalis, 0.5 liang, processed by heating to remove rough bark) Zhishi (Fructus Aurantii Immaturus, 2 qian)
Cut the herbs into sizes resembling hemp seeds. Use one and a half zhan of water to boil, squeeze out half a zhan of juice, and take warm.
