Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, four liang) Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, two liang) Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, two liang) Ejiao (Colla Corii Asini, three liang) Jizihuang (Ovi Galli Albumen, two pieces) The above five herbs are boiled in six sheng of water. First, boil the first three herbs until two sheng remain. Strain out the dregs, add Ejiao and melt it completely. When the decoction has cooled slightly, add the Ovi Galli Albumen. If added when too hot, the albumen will coagulate and fail to mix well. Stir thoroughly to ensure uniformity. Take seven ge warm, three times a day.
Shaoyin disease (disease pattern involving the Shaoyin channel), presenting after two or more days with mental restlessness and inability to sleep, is primarily treated with Huanglian Ejiao Tang. This condition involves heat pathogen transmitted into the Shaoyin channel, disturbing the Qi of Shaoyin. Therefore, the treatment principle is to descend heart fire and nourish yin, using Ovi Galli Albumen to guide the medicinal action downward.
Chishizhi (Halloysitum Rubrum, one jin; half used whole, half sifted into powder) Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, one liang) Jingmi (Oryza Sativa var. glutinosa, one sheng) The above three herbs are boiled in seven sheng of water until the rice is cooked. Strain out the dregs, then add the Halloysitum Rubrum powder. Administer one fangcun bi per dose. Take seven ge warm, three times a day. If symptoms resolve after one dose, discontinue the remaining medication. Mixing the powder into the decoction utilizes its astringent and retaining properties.
In Shaoyin disease, if diarrhea occurs accompanied by pus and blood in the stool, it results from disharmony of cold and heat causing putrefaction in the large intestine, forming pus and blood. This is distinctly different from diarrhea with undigested food. It is primarily treated with Taohua Tang.
Bencao states: Halloysitum Rubrum treats dysentery with red and white discharge.
In Shaoyin disease, progressing from two to five days, if abdominal pain, difficulty in urination, persistent diarrhea, and pus and blood in the stool occur, it is primarily treated with Taohua Tang.
Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, washed) Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus, peeled) Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried) The above three herbs are taken in equal parts, each separately pounded and sifted, then mixed together. Mix with Baiyin (rice water) and administer one fangcun bi of the powder per dose, three times a day.
If the powder cannot be taken dry, boil one sheng of water for seven boils, add two fangcun bi of the powder, boil for another three boils, remove from heat, let cool slightly, and swallow slowly in small amounts. Medications treating the upper jiao should have reduced dosages.
For Shaoyin disease manifesting as throat pain, since the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney channel traverses the throat and surrounds the root of the tongue, Banxia San Ji Tang is primarily indicated. Bencao states: Pinelliae Rhizoma treats soreness and swelling of the throat and pharynx. Cinnamomi Ramulus treats throat obstruction (houbi). These two are primary herbs for throat diseases; why did later practitioners prohibit their use?
