Coptidis Rhizoma (4 liang), Scutellariae Radix (1 liang), Paeoniae Radix Alba (2 liang), Ovum Gallinae (2 pieces), Euphorbiae Semen Preparatum (3 liang) [Note: 'Ephedrae Herba' is incorrect for Ejiao; Ejiao is Donkey-hide Gelatin. Correcting to Asini Corii Colla].
Asini Corii Colla (Donkey-hide Gelatin).
The above five herbs. Use five sheng of water. First decoct the first three herbs. Obtain two sheng of liquid. Remove the dregs. Add the gelatin and melt it completely. When slightly cool, add the Ovum Gallinae (Chicken Egg Yolk). Stir until well mixed. Take seven he of warm medicine orally. Three times a day.
Cheng Wuji's commentary states: When Yang is in excess, eliminate it with bitter flavors. The bitterness of Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) and Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) eliminates heat. When Yin is deficient, tonify it with sweet flavors. The sweetness of Ji Zi Huang (Ovum Gallinae) and Ejiao (Asini Corii Colla) nourishes blood. Sour flavor has a consolidating effect.
It also has a draining effect. The sourness of Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix) consolidates Yin Qi and drains pathogenic heat.
Wang Hu notes: The above formula treats insufficiency of Water of Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian (Zu Shao Yin Shen Jing) and excess of Fire of Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian (Shou Shao Yin Xin Jing). Excess Heart Fire indicates internal flourishing of Yang-Heat. Flourishing Yang-Heat must be drained with bitter flavors and overcome with cold properties. Therefore, Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) is used as the Sovereign herb, and Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) as the Minister herb. Insufficiency of Kidney Water indicates deficiency of Yin-Blood below. Deficient Yin-Blood must be tonified with sweet-warm properties and consolidated with sour-flat properties. Therefore, Ejiao (Asini Corii Colla) and Ji Zi Huang (Ovum Gallinae) are used as Sovereign herbs, and Baishao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) as the Envoy herb. Moreover, Baishao Yao can consolidate Yin and benefit blood. Cheng Wuji's comment that it drains pathogenic heat is certainly not a good interpretation.
Wang Hu further notes: This formula is suitable for those who indulge in sexual activities, suffering from internal deficiency of Essence-Blood and pathogenic heat diseases. If such individuals also contract Wind-Cold, this constitutes a Yin Syndrome Cold Damage (Yin Zheng Shang Han). One must urgently administer formulas like Fuzi Sini Tang (Aconite Decoction for Reversal of Cold), lest it be too late. Using the aforementioned cooling herbs to treat a Yin Syndrome with cold-natured drugs would merely accelerate death. I reply: The human body consists only of Yin and Yang. The root of Yin and Yang lies in the Kidney. Those who indulge in sex often suffer from Kidney Yin deficiency rather than Yang deficiency. Yang deficiency implies decline of Mingmen Fire (Gate of Life Fire). Yin deficiency implies exhaustion of Water in the Kidney. Excessive sexual activity leads to excessive loss of Essence. The lost Essence is Water and belongs to Yin. Furthermore, during sexual exertion, Heart Fire flares up first. Flaring Fire causes Water flow; more Water flow causes more Flaring Fire. Internal organs become dry and hot. External contraction of Cold Damage combined with pathogenic heat creates a dual heat condition. Kidney Water must wither. The patient becomes irritable, the tongue turns black with prickles, and death ensues. As the saying goes, "Cold Damage tends to harm those with weak constitutions," which refers precisely to this. There are also those today who indulge in lust, leak Essence endlessly, and die. Secular people do not call this "leaking Yin" but rather "leaking Yang," how extremely absurd! Someone asks again: "If what you say is true, then there is no such thing as Yin Syndrome in Cold Damage?" I reply: There is. Yin Syndrome refers to Zhong Han (Strike by Cold). This disease is due to Yang deficiency. Individuals with Yang deficiency have declining Mingmen Fire. They typically speak softly, fail to digest food properly, have weak limbs, feel cold below the waist, have impotence, and pass clear, white urine. This is deficiency of True Qi, compounded by external Cold invasion. Exterior, interior, and extremities are all cold. This is True Yin Syndrome. However, it is not solely caused by sexual activity. Even children can suffer from Yin Syndrome because of deficiency of Stomach Yang Qi, which fails to generate stagnant heat. Thus, the symptoms are detailed in the Treatise on Cold Strike.
In Shaoyin Disease, within one or two days, if the mouth feels normal and there is aversion to cold on the back, moxibustion should be applied. The primary formula is Fuzi Tang (Aconite Decoction).
Fuzi Tang Formula
In Shaoyin Disease, if there is body pain, cold hands and feet, bone and joint pain, and a deep pulse, the primary formula is Fuzi Tang (Aconite Decoction).
The above two syndromes and formulas (both found in the Treatise on Cold Strike)
In Shaoyin Disease, if there is diarrhea with pus and blood in the stool, the primary formula is Taohua Tang (Peach Kernel Decoction).
Taohua Tang Formula
In Shaoyin Disease, from two to three days up to four to five days, if there is abdominal pain, difficulty in urination, incessant diarrhea, and pus and blood in the stool, the primary formula is Taohua Tang (Peach Kernel Decoction).
The above two syndromes and formulas (both found in the Treatise on Cold Strike)
In Shaoyin diarrhea with pus and blood in the stool, acupuncture may be used. (This clause corresponds to the previous Taohua Tang syndrome. I believe "acupuncture may be used" is likely an error for "moxibustion may be used." The main text, commentary, and moxibustion methods are all found in the Treatise on Cold Strike.)
In Shaoyin Disease, if there is vomiting and diarrhea, cold extremities, and severe irritability bordering on despair, the primary formula is Wuzhuyu Tang (Evodia Decoction). (This syndrome is also a True Yin Syndrome. The main text, commentary, and formula are all found in the Treatise on Cold Strike.)
In Shaoyin Disease, if there is diarrhea, sore throat, chest fullness, and vexation, the primary formula is Zhufu Tang (Swine Skin Decoction). (This Shaoyin Syndrome is transmitted from the Three Yang meridians. Pathogenic Heat transmits into Shaoyin. The Qi of the Shaoyin meridian is deficient, hence diarrhea. The sore throat, chest fullness, and vexation occur because its meridian circulates along the throat, and its branch emerges from the Lung, connects with the Heart, and enters the Chest. Shanglun Pian states: "Shaoyin pathogenic heat fills the upper, lower, middle, and intermediate, reaching everywhere." Cheng Wuji comments: "Administer Zhufu Tang to harmonize Yin and dissipate heat.")
