(Huo Ren Shu) Jiegeng Banxia Tang Formula: Treats disharmony of cold and heat in the body caused by contracting cold pathogens. Fullness and obstruction in the heart and abdomen. Pain that occurs intermittently. Follows the principles of Yin and Yang to resolve fullness and obstruction.
Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix, slightly stir-fried and finely cut) Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, processed with fresh ginger juice) Chenjupi (Aged Tangerine Peel, each 1 liang) Zhishi (Immature Bitter Orange Fruit, half a liang, stir-fried with bran until reddish)
The above herbs are cut into pieces the size of hemp seeds. Each dose is 5 qian bi (a small measuring spoon). Add 1.5 zhan of water and 3 slices of fresh ginger. Decoct together until the volume reduces to 0.7 zhan. Strain the dregs. Take warm.
Wang Hu's commentary: The aforementioned indications mention "fullness and obstruction in the heart and abdomen, with intermittent pain." This is a Taiyin disease. Therefore, the aforementioned herbs enter the Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian, and also affect the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian and Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian. It is a formula for dispersing pathogenic factors and draining excess.
(Xuan Ming Fang) Binglang San Formula: Treats Shaoyin/Yin-type Cold Damage syndrome. Premature use of purgatives leads to Pi syndrome (obstruction/fullness). Fullness and obstruction in the epigastrium without pain. Palpation reveals softness and emptiness.
Binglang (Arecae Semen) Zhike (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus, equal parts)
The above herbs are powdered. Each dose is 3 qian. Mix with Huanglian Tang decoction. Take at any time. Take warm.
Wang Hu's commentary: The aforementioned indications mention "fullness and obstruction in the epigastrium," which refers to abdominal fullness. Abdominal fullness is a disease of the Taiyin meridian. Zhang Zhongjing stated: "In Taiyin disease, if the pulse is weak, and Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) or Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix) should be used, their dosage should be reduced."
Current Yin-type Cold Damage should be considered Taiyin disease. Misuse of purgatives results in Pi syndrome. There is no pain upon palpation. It is slightly less deficient than true Excess syndromes, but it is not true deficiency. The above formula acts on the Hand and Foot Taiyin meridians, and also enters the Yangming meridians.
(Tao Shi Fang) Guizhi Dahuang Tang Formula: Treats manifestations of the Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian receiving pathogenic influence. Abdominal fullness and pain. Dry throat and thirst. Warm hands and feet. Pulse is deep and forceful. This is due to pathogenic heat transmitting from Yang meridians to Yin meridians.
Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) Chishaoyao (Red Paeonia Root) Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) Zhishi (Immature Bitter Orange Fruit) Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix [this herb may be deleted])
Add 2 zhong of water, 1 slice of ginger, and 2 jujubes. Decoct. Before taking, crush Binglang (Arecae Semen) to extract 3 spoons of juice and add it. Take hot. Regarding abdominal fullness in this classic text, if there is no aversion to cold but there is wheezing, add Dafupi (Arecae Pericarpium) and remove Gancao.
Wang Hu's commentary: The above formula is essentially Zhang Zhongjing's Guizhi Jiadahuang Tang. The use of Chishaoyao follows Xu's Neitai Fangyi opinion. Adding Zhishi and Binglang combines elements from Liu Wan Su's Xuanming Lunfang. According to the aforementioned indications, these symptoms have nothing to do with Shaoyang syndrome; using Chaihu contradicts medical logic. Furthermore, the modification rule states that for abdominal fullness, Gancao is removed. I believe, following Zhang Yuansu's Haicang method, if there is fullness, one does not add Da Zao (Ziziphi Jujubae Fructus).
(Wang Hu) Commenting on Zhang Zhongjing: "In Taiyin disease, if the pulse is weak, and the patient has continuous spontaneous bowel movements, if Dahuang or Shaoyao should be used, their dosage should be reduced." A question was raised: "Since these two herbs should be reduced, are there other herbs to replace them?" My answer is: In Taiyin disease, if Dahuang and Shaoyao are indicated, it is due to abdominal fullness, excess heat, and pain, where Yang pathogenic factors have sunk into the Yin level. If there is heat pain, Shaoyao should not be reduced. If there is spontaneous diarrhea, Dahuang should be removed according to the law, and Huangqin Shaoyao Tang (Scutellaria and Paeonia Decoction) should be used instead.
