For cases where the tongue is severed, it must be reattached while still warm. Quickly strike an egg gently around its circumference to remove the hard shell, take the inner membrane, and cover it over the tongue. Apply Hongbao Dan (Red Treasure Pill) onto the membrane; the tongue will naturally reconnect. If a long time has passed and the tongue has cooled, reattachment is unnecessary. Simply apply Hongbao Dan, and the severed part will regenerate naturally. The severed lips and tongue should be covered with egg membrane for protection against wind and cold.
If external symptoms present as alternating chills and fever with pain, use Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) added with Chaihu (Bupleurum Root). If there is afternoon fever accompanied by pain, add Digupi (Cortex Lycii). If fatigue and poor appetite are present, use Sijunzi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction) added with Xiong (Ligusticum Rhizome), Gui (Angelica Sinensis), and Chaihu. If there is aversion to cold and poor appetite, use Tuoli San (Supporting Interior Powder) added with Renshen (Ginseng Root). If there is irritability, thirst, and fever, use Danggui Buxue Tang (Dongquang Blood-Nourishing Decoction). If there is no pain, simply using formulas like Sijunzi Tang to strengthen the Spleen will allow muscles to regenerate naturally, with recovery expected in about ten days. Avoid using acrid and hot medications, as they may exacerbate fire and increase pain.
A child had his tongue severed by approximately half a cun. After applying Hongbao Dan and taking Siwu Tang with Chaihu, the pain subsided and bleeding stopped. Subsequently, he took Sijunzi Tang with Chaihu and Zhizi (Gardenia Fruit), and after more than a month, the tongue healed completely on its own.
A fourteen-year-old child, after recovering from an epidemic disease, bit his tongue causing bleeding. My late father attributed this to Kidney deficiency and prescribed Dihuang Wan (Rehmannia Pill), which resulted in a cure. Later, when hemoptysis, coughing blood, fever, and profuse phlegm occurred, the same pill was used again, leading to recovery.
A child suffered a lip injury with continuous bleeding. Medication was applied to stop the bleeding, but the lips and face became swollen. Upon removing the medication, significant bleeding occurred, and the swelling suddenly subsided. Treatment with Tuoli San (Supporting Interior Powder) and Danggui Gao (Angelica Ointment) led to suppuration and subsequent healing of the affected area.
Another child suffered a lip injury with swelling, pain, and fever. After taking heat-clearing and pain-relieving medications, he experienced two episodes of diarrhea, followed by twitching of the eyebrows and eyes. Subsequent administration of wind-dispelling medicines caused cold fingers and convulsions of the hands and feet. I diagnosed this as Spleen Earth being invaded by Liver Wood, and prescribed Yigong San (Yi Gong Powder) added with Shengma (Cimicifuga Rhizome), Chaihu, and Banxia (Pinellia Tuber). The hands warmed, and convulsions ceased. Continued use of the previous formula combined with Tuoli San resulted in a cure.
A child fell and injured himself, presenting with twitching of the lips and mouth, grinding teeth, startled crying, and abdominal pain. This was caused by excessive blood loss leading to internal movement of Liver Fire. Administration of Siwu Tang with Chaihu and Zhizi stabilized the condition. However, if the pain spread to the face, it indicated impending suppuration. Four doses of Tuoli San were given. When head and eye swelling and pain appeared with a slippery and rapid pulse, it confirmed that pus had formed but could not drain due to Qi deficiency. Two additional doses of Tuoli San allowed the pus to drain and the swelling to subside. Had astringent wound-healing agents not been used hastily at the initial stage, this complication would have been avoided.
A child with a lip injury presented with bleeding, convulsions, and fixed gaze. One dose of Chaihu Zhizi San (Bupleurum and Gardenia Powder) slightly stabilized the convulsions, but pain remained at the wound site. External application of Hongbao Dan and internal administration of Xiaoyao San (Free and Easy Wanderer Powder) led to recovery.
A child suffered facial swelling from a fall, with bleeding from the lips and cheeks, wound pain, and fever. Huarui Shi San (Flower Porphyry Stone Powder) was applied externally, stopping the bleeding and pain. Subsequently, Danggui Buxue Tang was administered, instantly resolving the fever. Jiawei Xiaoyao San (Modified Free and Easy Wanderer Powder) and Bazhen Tang (Eight Treasures Decoction) were used to promote suppuration, followed by Tuoli San to promote wound contraction and healing.
Hongbao Dan (also known as Jiyin Dan): Treats traumatic injuries, pain, and reattachment of severed parts.
Tianhuafen (Trichosanthes Root, 2 liang), Jianghuang (Turmeric Rhizome), Baizhi (Angelica Dahurica Root), Chishiyao (Red Halloysite, each 1 liang).
Grind into powder, mix with water, and apply to the affected area.
Alternative method: Burn human hair to ash and apply to the tongue for reattachment. Also treats: abrasion of ears or nose. While still warm, dip the affected area into the ash for immediate healing. It is also necessary to hold the medicine in the mouth to prevent cooling.
Danggui Buxue Tang: Treats blood and Qi damage from cane wounds or metal wounds; or blood and Qi deficiency caused by improper use of harsh purgatives. Symptoms include skin fever, intense thirst with desire to drink, red eyes, red face, persisting day and night, with a large and empty pulse upon deep pressure. The Classics state: "Empty pulse indicates blood deficiency; solid pulse indicates blood excess." This is blood-deficiency fever. The presentation resembles Baihu Tang (White Tiger Decoction), distinguished only by the lack of a full, forceful pulse. Misuse of Baihu Tang will result in death. This condition often arises from irregular eating and overexertion. (Formula see "Unremitting Fever")
Siwu Tang: Treats all types of fever due to blood deficiency; or excessive blood loss; or excessive use of draining therapies; or fever and restlessness after ulceration. It is suitable for these conditions. (Formula see "Axillary Abscess")
Chaihu Zhizi San (Formula see "Hypochondriac Abscess")
Huarui Shi San (Formula see later)
Bazhen Tang
Jiawei Xiaoyao San (Both formulas see "Unremitting Fever")
Tuoli San (Formula see "Heat-Toxic Sores and Ulcers")
