(Also known as Chi You Feng [Red Roaming Wind])
If red spots appear on the head, face, back, abdomen, hands, and feet of infants and children, this is a manifestation of Dan Du [Erysipelas]. When the red halo spreads most rapidly, it is called Huo Dan [Fire Erysipelas]. When the red halo presents with redness and swelling, resembling millet grains, or like urticaria (wind wheals), or like tinea and scabies, and spreads more slowly, it is called Feng Dan [Wind Erysipelas] (the treatment is the same). At the area of the red halo, prick randomly with a three-edged needle to release toxic blood, two to three times a day (the discharged blood resembles feces). Wu Fu Hua Du Wan (Five Blessings Detoxifying Pill) and Xi Jiao Xiao Du Yin (Rhinoceros Horn Detoxification Decoction) (both formulas are listed below) are indicated.
One prescription: Apply Bai Qing [White Egg White] onto Qiuye [Ficus tikoua Bur. leaves] (if the leaves are dry, soak them in water before use) and apply frequently; this effectively eliminates redness.
One prescription: Pound Mustard Seeds (Jiezi) into a paste to form a cake, and apply it to the edge of the red halo, so that toxic qi cannot spread outward recklessly.
One prescription: Take raw chestnuts retaining their inner skin, grind them, mix with the father's urine, and apply topically.
One prescription: Roast tofu over fire and apply topically while warm.
One prescription: After needling, apply slices of raw pork topically. Alternatively, apply raw dog skin while it is still warm.
After the pus from infantile eczema (Tai Chuang) ruptures, if the wound does not heal immediately and the edges become red, it often develops into Huo Dan [Fire Erysipelas]; the treatment method is the same as above.
If an infant's face suddenly swells, appearing white as usual, which gradually spreads to form sores resembling tinea or scabies, this also belongs to the category of Dan Du [Erysipelas], commonly known as Bai Dan Du [White Erysipelas]; the treatment method is the same as above.
(Among diseases of infants and children, abdominal pain is the most common.)
For one- or two-year-old children who have not yet learned to speak, if they experience abdominal pain, they will inevitably cry sadly, sweat, turn around and arch their bellies, be restless sitting or lying down, frequently look at the lower abdomen, and have intermittent pain. This is Re Xing Fu Tong [Heat-type Abdominal Pain]. Administer Dao Chi San (Formula listed below) with Ruan Huang Qin [Scutellariae Radix Softened] (5 fen) added, decocted and taken orally.
Before infants start wearing trousers, if they tend to remove their swaddling clothes, and their abdomen is exposed to wind or cold contact, causing external cold to invade the body, abdominal pain may occur. Administer Shen Cha [Ginseng Tea] (4-5 fen). If Ginseng (Renshen) is unavailable, then equal parts of Fennel (Huixiang, wine-fried), Frankincense (Ruxiang), and Cyperi Rhizome (Xiangfuzi) should be decocted and taken orally.
If infants are placed in cold environments or damp places, resulting in abdominal pain, vomiting of milk, or severe belching, the treatment method is the same as above.
There are four causes for nocturnal crying in infants: one is Cold, two is Heat, three is Kou Chuang [Mouth Ulcers] and Chong She [Double Tongue], and four is Ke Wu [External Evil Intrusion]. Crying while bending the waist in the latter half of the night, with cold breath from the mouth, indicates Han Xing Fu Tong [Cold-type Abdominal Pain], treated by Liu Shen San (Formula listed below). Crying while lying on the back in the first half of the night, with sweating and fever, indicates Re Xing Fu Tong [Heat-type Abdominal Pain], treated by Dao Chi San. Crying immediately upon touching the nipple without being able to suckle indicates Kou Chuang [Mouth Ulcers] (take 4-5 egg whites mixed with Bai Qing [White Egg White] orally for immediate effect) or Chong She [Double Tongue] (prick both sides randomly with a needle until bleeding occurs, avoiding the midline suture; alternatively, stir-fried Puhuang [Lygodii Spora] mixed with Bai Qing [White Egg White] applied frequently is best). Crying due to Ke Wu [External Evil Intrusion] or exposure to external evil qi, especially severe at dusk, indicates Rong Wu Zhong E [Invasion of Malevolent Qi], treated by Su He Wan (Styrax Pill).
If abdominal pain occurs immediately after an infant suckles milk, it is likely due to the mother having Stomach Heat. The nursing mother should take Shi Gao Ping Wei San (Gypsum Pingwei Powder) (Formula listed below). If the nursing mother consumes excessive greasy, cold, or raw foods, the infant may develop abdominal pain, vomiting of milk, and dysentery. The nursing mother should add Rou Gui [Cinnamon Bark], Gan Jiang [Zingiberis Rhizoma], Zhi Qiao [Aurantii Fructus], and Huang Bo [Phellodendri Cortex] (each 5 da fen) to Ping Wei San and take it orally; the abdominal pain will resolve immediately.
Severe pain around the umbilicus that is unbearable is named Pan Chang Nei Diao [Coiled Intestine Internal Torsion], treated by Ru Xiang San (Frankincense Powder) (Formula listed below).
