Women may experience a sensation of tightness and urgency in the lower abdomen, feeling constrained and uncomfortable, which leads to infertility. This is something most people do not understand; who would suspect that it is due to the contraction and tension of the Dai Mai (Girdle Vessel)? The Dai Mai is connected between the waist and the umbilicus; it should be relaxed rather than tense. The current tension of the Dai Mai is caused by the obstruction of Qi flow in the waist and umbilical region. The obstruction of Qi in the waist and umbilical region, in turn, is due to insufficiency of Spleen and Stomach Qi.
When Spleen and Stomach Qi are deficient, Qi closure occurs in the waist and umbilical region; when Qi is closed there, the Dai Mai becomes contracted and tense, thereby pulling on the Bao Luo (Uterus). Even if semen is directly deposited into the uterus, the uterus may temporarily accommodate it, but it lacks the strength to sustain it, inevitably leading to the risk of miscarriage. Moreover, since many people fail to regulate their sexual desires, how can they ensure the fetus does not fall? This is why the tension of the Dai Mai prevents conception. The treatment method should aim to relax the tension of the Dai Mai. However, this tension cannot be relieved immediately; one must first promote the free flow of Qi in the waist and umbilical region. Since Qi flow there cannot be immediately unblocked, it is necessary to greatly tonify the Qi and Blood of the Spleen and Stomach. Once the waist and umbilical region is unblocked and the Dai Mai is relaxed, conception will naturally become easy.
The formula used is Kuan Dai Tang (Broaden the Girdle Decoction).
Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 1 liang, stir-fried with soil)
Ba Ji Rou (Morindae Officinalis Radix, 5 qian, soaked in wine)
Bu Gu Zhi (Psoraleae Fructus, 1 qian, stir-fried with salt water)
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 3 qian)
Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix, 3 qian, heart removed)
Du Zhong (Eucommiae Cortex, 3 qian, stir-fried until black)
Shu Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata, 5 qian, steamed nine times)
Rou Cong Rong (Cistanches Herba, 3 qian, washed clean)
Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, 3 qian, stir-fried with wine)
Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 1 qian, washed with wine)
Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus, 3 fen, stir-fried)
Jian Lian Zi (Nelumbinis Semen, 20 grains, heart not removed)
Decoct with water and take orally. After four doses, the sensation of tightness in the lower abdomen disappears; after one month of taking the decoction, pregnancy is achieved. The brilliance of this formula lies in its dual tonification of the Spleen and Stomach, while simultaneously promoting Qi flow in the waist and umbilical region. Naturally, the Dai Mai becomes wide and comfortable, capable of bearing and sustaining the fetus. Some may doubt that the use of the sour and astringent properties of Wu Wei Zi and Bai Shao in the formula would not increase the tension of the Dai Mai, yet instead result in its relaxation, which seems incomprehensible. How could one know that the tension of the Dai Mai stems from Qi and Blood deficiency? When Blood is deficient, tendons contract and fail to extend; when Qi is deficient, tendons spasm and fail to reach. Using the sour flavor of Bai Shao to pacify Liver Wood ensures that Liver does not overact upon Spleen Earth. Using the sour flavor of Wu Wei Zi to generate Kidney Water ensures that Kidney nourishes the Dai Mai. Though seemingly obstructive, they actually assist each other; what is there to doubt?
