During pregnancy, if there is abdominal pain for several days and delivery cannot occur, people generally say it is due to Qi deficiency and weakness, unable to push the fetus out of the birth canal. However, who would know that this is actually due to Blood deficiency causing stagnation, where the uterus lacks Blood, making it difficult for the fetus to turn?
The formation of the fetus originates from the Essence (Jing) of the Kidney; while the nourishment of the fetus relies on the Blood of the Zang-Fu organs. Therefore, abundant Blood facilitates easy delivery, whereas deficient Blood leads to difficult labor. Thus, prior to delivery, one should use herbs that tonify Blood. Since Blood cannot be generated instantly even with tonification, Qi must also be tonified to generate Blood. However, one should not solely tonify Qi, lest Yang become excessively vigorous while Blood remains insufficient. The harm of such imbalance is that Qi may rise without descending, which is a precursor to difficult labor. To prevent trouble before it arises, only by tonifying both Qi and Blood can this be achieved. If both Qi and Blood are robust, Qi can push the fetus forward, and Blood is sufficient to moisten it. Like in a vast ocean, turning around is naturally easy, so how could there be any concern about stagnation?
The formula used is Sendzi Decoction (Songzi Dan).
Raw Radix Astragali (Sheng Huangqi) 30g, Radix Angelicae Sinensis (Danggui) 30g (washed with wine), Radix Ophiopogonis (Maidong) 30g (core removed), Prepared Radix Rehmanniae (Shu Di) 15g (steamed nine times), Rhizoma Chuanxiong (Chuanxiong) 9g.
Decoct in water and take orally. After two doses, delivery will occur. There will be no risk of transverse or breech presentation. This is a formula for tonifying both Blood and Qi. Comparing the two aspects, the ingredients for tonifying Blood outweigh those for tonifying Qi. For tonifying Qi, only Raw Radix Astragali is used; the rest are all Blood-tonifying herbs. When Blood is abundant, Qi receives nourishment; when Qi is generated, Blood has a foundation. The uterus becomes moistened, making delivery natural and easy. It is like a boat encountering shallow water: despite great human effort, it is ultimately difficult to push forward. Suddenly, spring floods arrive, and the boat naturally feels ready to move; aided by a following wind, would it not sail swiftly?
Marginal Note: The formula is excellent. If the fetal head has emerged but the pubic symphysis (Jiaogu) fails to open, add three qian (approx. 9-10g) of Calcined Carapax et Plastrum Testudinis (Zhi Guiban) tail, and three qian (approx. 9-10g) of hair from the vertex of a woman who has previously given birth. Wash clean, place a new tile on fire until the hair turns to ash, decoct together with the medicine, and take orally for immediate effect.
Verse:
When a pregnant woman faces labor days in advance,
Abdominal pain persists, yet birth does not come. Why?
Lacking Blood in the uterus, the body finds it hard to turn,
The principle of difficult labor due to Blood deficiency is clear.
In Sendzi Decoction, Raw Radix Astragali comes first,
With Radix Ophiopogonis, Radix Angelicae Sinensis, Prepared Radix Rehmanniae, and Rhizoma Chuanxiong decocted.
Take two consecutive doses, and delivery becomes easy,
Like a boat gaining water and sailing with the wind.
