Women may suffer from leukorrhea that is yellow in color, resembling strong tea liquor, with a fishy and foul odor; this is referred to as "Yellow Leukorrhea" (Huang Dai). Yellow Leukorrhea is caused by damp-heat in the Ren Mai (Conception Vessel). The Ren Mai normally cannot accommodate water-dampness; how can dampness enter and transform into yellow leukorrhea? It is unknown that the Dai Mai (Girdle Vessel) grows horizontally and connects with the Ren Mai. The Ren Mai ascends vertically to the lips and teeth. Between the lips and teeth, there is a continuous flow of saliva descending through the Ren Mai to transform into essence. If the Ren Mai were not surrounded by heat qi, the saliva in the mouth would entirely transform into essence and enter the Kidneys. However, when pathogenic heat remains between the Lower Jiao (Lower Burner), the body fluids cannot transform into essence but instead transform into dampness. Dampness is the qi of Earth, actually representing the invasion of Water; Heat is the qi of Fire, actually arising from Wood. The natural color of Water is black, and the natural color of Fire is red. Now, when dampness combines with heat, it desires to transform into red but cannot, and desires to return to black but fails. After being boiled down into juice, it consequently turns yellow. This transformation follows dampness rather than the normal transformations of Water and Fire. Therefore, some people mistakenly attribute yellow leukorrhea to damp-heat in the Spleen. Treating only the Spleen without success occurs because they do not realize that True Water and True Fire combine to form Dan Xie (Dan Pathogen) and Yuan Xie (Yuan Pathogen), which surround the Ren Mai and Bao Tuo (Uterus/Ovaries), thereby transforming into this dark-yellow hue. How can treating only the Spleen lead to a cure? The treatment method should tonify the deficiency of the Ren Mai and clear the flaming fire of the Kidneys, which will likely result in recovery.
The formula used is Yi Huang Tang (Change Yellow Decoction).
Shan Yao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma, 1 liang, stir-fried) Qian Shi (Euryales Semen, 1 liang, stir-fried) Huang Bo (Phellodendri Cortex, 2 qian, stir-fried with salt water) Che Qian Zi (Plantaginis Semen, 1 qian, stir-fried with wine) Bai Guo (Ginkgonis Semen, 10 pieces, crushed)
Decoct in water and take orally. Continuous administration for four doses ensures recovery in all cases. This is not merely a formula for treating yellow leukorrhea; it can treat any leukorrhea disorder, but its efficacy is particularly remarkable for yellow leukorrhea. This is because Shan Yao and Qian Shi specifically tonify the deficiency of the Ren Mai and promote diuresis. Adding Bai Guo facilitates entry into the Ren Mai, making the action more efficient and thus leading to rapid results. Regarding the use of Huang Bo to clear the fire in the Kidneys: since the Kidneys communicate with and assist the Ren Mai, resolving the fire in the Kidneys resolves the heat in the Ren Mai.
Marginal Note: Most leukorrhea syndromes are due to Spleen dampness. In early stages without heat, tonifying the Spleen Earth and regulating the Qi of the Chong Mai (Penetrating Vessel) and Ren Mai will allow the disease to heal spontaneously. If dampness persists and generates heat, clearing Kidney fire is necessary to provide an exit route for the dampness. The use of Huang Bo and Che Qian Zi in the formula is ingenious!
Shan Yao and Qian Shi are especially effective in clearing heat and generating fluids.
The terms "Dan Xie" and "Yuan Xie" are unclear. It is proposed to replace them with "True Water and True Fire invaded by damp-heat qi, surrounding the Ren Mai," which eliminates grammatical errors. However, the original text should not be lightly altered, so we retain it tentatively.
