In cases where Yin deficiency leads to Spleen deficiency with diarrhea, persisting for years, characterized by either food stagnation without digestion or loose stools after digestion, the following prescription is used:
Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmannia Root) [5 qian], Shan Yu Rou (Cornus Fruit) [5 qian], Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome) [1 liang], Shan Yao (Dioscorea Opposita Rhizome) [3 qian], Fu Ling (Poria) [3 qian], Wu Wei Zi (Schisandra Fruit) [1 qian], Che Qian Zi (Plantago Seed) [1 qian],
Rou Gui (Cinnamon Bark) [1 qian], Sheng Ma (Cimicifuga Rhizome) [3 fen].
Decoct in water and take in the evening.
This prescription consists purely of Yin-nourishing herbs, and includes Sheng Ma to lift the Qi within the Yin. [When Yin Qi ascends, diarrhea naturally ceases.] It also contains warming and drying dampness agents to warm the Ming Men (Gate of Life/Kidney Yang) and strengthen the Spleen Earth,
so why would loose stools recur? [This is a decoction that tonifies and ascends Yin Qi.]
If there is Kidney Water deficiency combined with cold pathogen invasion, or exhaustion of Kidney Water, manifesting as night fever and daytime chills, if mistakenly treated as a Yang syndrome, thirst will increase and heat will become more intense, inevitably consuming all Yin fluids, leading to vomiting of phlegm like cotton wool,
unremitting cough, hoarseness, and eventually transforming into Lao Zhai (consumptive disease resembling tuberculosis). The method should be to vigorously tonify Yin; once Yin fluids are sufficient, fire will extinguish itself, and the Marrow will be at peace. Use the following prescription:
Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmannia Root) [1 liang], Di Gu Pi (Lycium Bark) [3 qian], Shan Yu Rou (Cornus Fruit) [5 qian], Xuan Shen (Scrophularia Root) [3 qian], Sha Shen (Glehnia or Adenophora Root) [5 qian], Mai Dong (Ophiopogon Tuber) [5 qian], Wu Wei Zi (Schisandra Fruit) [3 qian],
Bai Jie Zi (White Mustard Seed) [1 qian], Qian Shi (Euryale Seed) [5 qian], Sang Ye (Mulberry Leaf) [7 pieces], Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex) [1 qian], Che Qian Zi (Plantago Seed) [1 qian].
Decoct in water and take.
This prescription is miraculous for Yin deficiency with Fire agitation. [Its brilliance lies in the use of pure Yin herbs that directly enter the Kidney Palace to nourish deficiencies, so that anxious and emaciated symptoms do not flare up to the mouth, tongue, skin, and hair.
Furthermore, the addition of Xuan Shen, Di Gu Pi, Sha Shen, and Dan Pi slightly clears internal heat from the Marrow, naturally allowing Yin to grow and Yang to decline; Yang is pacified without direct treatment.]
If there is Yin-cold without Fire (True Cold/False Heat or Pure Yin-Cold pattern), use the following prescription:
Rou Gui (Cinnamon Bark) [1 qian], Fu Zi (Aconite Lateralis Radix Praeparata) [1 qian], Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmannia Root) [1 liang], Shan Yu Rou (Cornus Fruit) [4 qian], Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome) [3 qian], Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) [3 qian], Chai Hu (Bupleurum Root) [5 fen].
Decoct in water and take.
[The妙 (wonder) of this prescription lies in using warming and dispelling-cold herbs like Rou Gui and Fu Zi within the context of Shu Di Huang's Yin-tonifying nature, ensuring Yang is controlled by Yin and does not rush or boil uncontrollably. Adding a small amount of Chai Hu allows Yin pathogens to dissipate naturally. Moreover, the Fire within the Kidney must arise from Water; this Water is not Pathogenic Water but True Water. Pathogenic Water can invade the Heart causing immediate death, whereas True Water can save the Heart and prolong life. Since Yang is rooted in Yin, True Yin Kidney Water is actually the mother of Jun Huo (Ministerial Fire) and Xiang Huo (Heart Fire). The inclusion of Shu Di Huang and Shan Yu Rou in this prescription embodies this principle. Fearing people might not understand, it is explicitly stated here.]
[Regarding] the above two prescriptions, they demonstrate treating Yang within the context of treating Yin, and concealing the principle of tonifying Yin within the treatment of Yang.
