A woman, aged thirty-four, had amenorrhea (absence of menstruation), alternating chills and fever (alternating cold and heat sensations), sallow complexion with lack of luster, dry cracked lips, red cheeks, and occasional coughing two or three times.
Previously, she had taken medications including Heishen San (Black Divine Powder), Wujin Wan (Black Gold Pill), Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction [a blood-nourishing formula]), Shaogan San, Biejia San, Jianzhong Tang (Middle-Jiao Building Decoction [a warming and tonifying formula]), and Ningfei San, and underwent hundreds of acupuncture and moxibustion sessions, yet her condition worsened. Her family grew weary and lost the desire to seek further treatment. Zhang Congzheng (courtesy name Dairen) pitied her and first induced vomiting to expel five to six sheng of phlegm. By noon, after the emesis was completed, she could eat by afternoon, and all other symptoms disappeared. Three days later, a mild emetic therapy was repeated, expelling another one to two sheng of phlegm, and her appetite improved further. Within a few days, she took Tongjing San (Menstruation-Promoting Powder), resulting in the purgation of one to two sheng of foul matter. After several days, several layers of dead skin peeled off; small pieces resembled skin flakes, while large ones resembled reed membranes. Within less than a month, her menstruation resumed, and her spirit and vital energy recovered significantly.
Another woman presented with a cold body and a faint pulse. She could only consume boiling hot porridge and rice, wore heavy clothing in June, and still felt cold even with a fox-skin hat covering her head. She suffered from incessant diarrhea. She had long taken drying and heating agents such as Shengjiang (Dried Ginger Rhizome), Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Root), and Liuhuang (Sulfur), achieving only a stable state; any slight use of cooling herbs exacerbated her illness, which persisted for three years without cure. Zhang Congzheng palpated both wrists and found the pulses firm like ropes, beating six or seven times per breath cycle. The *Maijue* states: "Six is rapid, seven is extreme, indicating excessive heat." He placed a cool cloth on her heart area, then splashed fresh well water onto the affected areas. The woman screamed in pain. Restraint was necessary as she was not in control; forty buckets of cold water were poured over her. She experienced profuse sweating accompanied by severe shivering, followed by drowsiness and fatigue for one or two days, after which all previously disliked symptoms vanished. This method had been used by Hua Tuo (courtesy name Yuanhua), but it was unknown to the world.
The wife of Chang Zhongming suffered from heat and pain in both hands whenever winter cold arrived. Zhang Congzheng said, "The four limbs are the root of all Yang meridians. In summer, when Yang Qi disperses outward, there is no pain; but in autumn and winter, when Yang Qi converges inward, pain occurs." He administered Sanhua Shenwan (Three-Flower Divine Pill) for strong purgation, and the heat syndrome subsequently resolved.
The wife of Wang Lunfu from Baiting originally suffered from loss of appetite due to grief and depression following the death of her son. Physicians failed to investigate properly, diagnosing stomach cold and blood dryness, and employed various blood-nourishing and moistening agents indiscriminately. Her condition deteriorated into vomiting, regurgitation, and emaciation, leading her to seek treatment from Zhang Congzheng. A single observation indicated that emesis and purgation would cure her. After recovery, forgetting dietary restrictions, her illness relapsed with constipation of both stool and urine, cramping abdominal pain, vomiting and refusal to eat for one day, and total obstruction of bowel and bladder movements for thirteen days. She consulted Zhang Congzheng again. Zhang Congzheng instructed: "First, consume okra soup, spinach, and pig blood to moisten dryness and resolve stagnation; next, take over two hundred pills of Dao Yin Wan (Guide Drink Pill) to vigorously purge accumulated feces; then, drink several sheng of ice water freely, followed by regulation using Sofeng Wan (Wind-Searching Pill) and Guiling Baizhu San (Cinnamon Twig, Poria, and Atractylodes Macrocephala Powder); finally, take more than thirty pills of Dao Yin Wan after meals. Within a few days, both anterior and posterior passages became unobstructed, vomiting ceased, appetite returned, and food intake resumed. Upon departure, he left behind Runchang Wan (Intestine-Moistening Pill) to prevent recurrence, and Dichang San (Intestine-Cleansing Powder) for severe constipation. It took more than forty days of consuming Dahuang (Rhubarb Rhizome and Stem) and Qianniu (Pharbitis Seed) for full convalescence. Wang Lunfu sighed, 'Had I continued taking those previous heating medicines, I would no longer be alive today.' A monk asked Zhang Congzheng, saying, 'The intestine (Chang) implies smooth flow (Chang). If it is not smooth, why?'"
