Wang Minzhi, a physician of the Law Department, suffered from Shui Han (Water Hernia, a disease characterized by scrotal swelling and fluid accumulation). The pathogenesis lay in cold pathogens invading the interior of the body.
Guo Jingzhi suffered from Liu Yin (Retention of Fluids, retention of pathological fluids within the body) for four days. He presented with edema, inability to eat, and swelling of the feet extending to the scrotum with pain. Initially, he was treated with a bitter emetic to induce vomiting (Yong Fa), followed by treatment with Zhou Che Wan (Boat Cart Pill) and Jun Chuan San (River Clearing Powder) to purge water. The disease was eliminated as easily as picking up a lost item.
Additionally, an old farmer surnamed Yang from Zhang Fengcun, Tangxi, had been vomiting sour fluid for over ten years. This was originally a case of Liu Yin. Various physicians treated him with drying agents, applying moxibustion and acupuncture at Zhongwan (CV12) and the umbilicus, yet the sores never healed. Dai Ren (Zhang Congzheng's courtesy name) used a bitter emetic to induce vomiting. His phlegm came out like glue, totaling two to three sheng (a unit of volume). He recovered while chatting and laughing.
A fifteen-year-old boy from Chengjia Village, Caizhai, suffered from Dan Huang (Jaundice) for one year. His face was yellow like gold, his whole body was swollen and weak, and he only desired salty foods and charred items. Dai Ren administered Cha Tiao San (Tea Regulation Powder) to induce vomiting, expelling a bowlful of phlegm. In the evening, he administered seventy to eighty pills of Zhou Che Wan and three qian of Tong Jing San (Meridian Unblocking Powder), resulting in four or five bowel movements. After six or seven days, he again used Zhou Che Wan and Jun Chuan San, causing another four or five bowel movements. Upon seeing salty and charred foods, he felt disgust, and his complexion turned red. Subsequently, Dai Ren induced vomiting again with Cha Tiao San, expelling two sheng of phlegm, after which the patient recovered.
Another man, who had entered his wife's family as a live-in son-in-law, accidentally contracted Dan Huang. He had a good appetite but became emaciated, his limbs were unable to move, and his face was yellow and devoid of strength. His father-in-law wished to discard him, but his daughter refused, saying, "I have already borne two children; shall I remarry?" The father-in-law was originally a farmer and called his son-in-law to perform labor. Seeing the severity of the illness, he insulted him daily. Someone advised him to take Dan Fan Wan (Alum Pill) and San Leng Wan (Burreed Rhizome Pill), but these had no effect. Acupuncture, prayer, and exorcism also failed. Dai Ren saw him and treated him without taking the pulse. He prescribed an emetic, which expelled one dou (a unit of volume) of accumulated phlegm and retained water. He then used Xie Shui Wan (Water Purging Pill) and Tong Jing San, resulting in more than forty or fifty bowel movements. Dai Ren ordered him to drink a bowlful of ice water, which immediately stopped the diarrhea. Subsequently, he took Ping Wei San (Regulate the Stomach Powder) and intermittently took Bing Lang Wan (Areca Seed Pill) for five to seven days. The jaundice subsided, and strength returned. This is because the syndrome of Pi Dan (Spleen Jaundice) results from damp-heat clashing with undigested food. It is commonly known as Jin Lao Huang (Metal Exhaustion Jaundice).
Furthermore, the families of Zhu, Ge, Zhou, Huang, and Liu each had servants suffering from Dan Huang. Dai Ren said, "The duties of servants involve irregular diet temperature and frequent exposure to wind, summer heat, dampness, and cold. It is difficult to regulate their lifestyle, and it would be a waste of therapeutic effort." Two of the families kept their servants at Dai Ren's residence, following his dietary instructions. One servant remained with his master to perform duties. All three took Ku San (Bitter Powder) to induce vomiting and San Hua Shen Wan (Three Flowers Divine Pill) to purge. Within five days, indeed, two servants recovered while one did not, exactly as Dai Ren predicted.
