A son of a man surnamed Wang in Qingzhou, aged over ten, suffered from red eyes and excessive tearing, to which many physicians had no effective remedy. Dai Ren (Zhang Congzheng) observed him and said, "This child's eye disease stems from fright sustained in the womb." The father replied, "During pregnancy, while in Linqing, they were besieged." Dai Ren prescribed Guiti San (Melon Peduncle Powder) with Yujin (Curcuma Aromatica Rhizome). Through inducing vomiting and purging, several sheng of phlegm-saliva were expelled upwards and downwards. People laughed at this approach. The mother also said, "There is no illness in the child's abdomen; why induce such severe vomiting and diarrhea?" By the next day, his eyes were bright and clear. Li Zhong'an was amazed upon seeing this, saying, "What a miraculous method!" On that same day, Dai Ren induced bleeding from the head, above the eyebrows, and from the nose. After vomiting, Tongjing San (Meridian-Penetrating Powder) 2 qian was administered, followed by 70 pills of Zhouche Wan (Boat-Chariot Pill), resulting in only partial vomiting. Another 1 qian of Tongjing San was given. The next day, 30 pills of Zhouche Wan were administered. After eighteen bowel movements, the disease did not recur.
The son of Liu Guangji from Hejian, only two years old, suffered from post-illness vomiting and lethargy. Treatments with Dingxiang (Caryophylli Flos) and Doukou (Amomi Fructus Rotundus) proved ineffective. Mr. Ma, who was staying at their home, told Guangji, "I have a small prescription that is non-toxic and well-known. Would you be willing to follow it?" Guangji replied, "Your words must be reasonable; how dare I not obey?" Mr. Ma said, "He Jian often stated: Liangge San (Cooling the Diaphragm Powder) can treat sores. Dai Ren used it with divine efficacy. Moreover, *Neijing* states: 'When Shaoyang arrives, it manifests as vomiting and surging.' Shaoyang corresponds to Ministerial Fire, not Cold." Guangji happily complied. That day, the child had two bowel movements. Wang Dexiu happened to enter from outside, heard of the purgation, and said, "Sores should never be treated with purgatives from beginning to end." Mr. Ma regretted speaking too much, but the action was already taken, so he waited. By mealtime, one he of yellow phlegm was discharged. At noon, upon inquiry, the child was already playing on the street.
An elder surnamed Zhang from Pengwu, over sixty years old, suffered from heat-jue headache. Having used emetic medicines for about a month, and additionally subjected to fire therapy, his bowels and viscera were first cleared. Due to his advanced age and physical exhaustion, he collapsed upon stepping out into the sunlight, losing consciousness. His family panicked and wanted to rub and beat him. Dai Ren said, "Absolutely do not disturb him." Subsequently, watermelon, cold water, and honey-snow were given, after which he revived shortly. This occurred because the patient was elderly and had undergone emesis and purging, causing the eye vessels to become disordered; internal inflammatory fire combined with external solar exposure led to his fall. If disturbed then, he could not be saved. Only by calming the spirit, administering cold water, and waiting quietly could he recover. Quietness belongs to Water, naturally resolving the issue. Other physicians would surely be confused; this demonstrates Dai Ren's expertise.
