The wife of Magistrate Zhang from Yangxia suffered from Feiqi (Liver Accumulation), initially presenting as a mass the size of a wine cup, accompanied by severe alternating chills and fever. After more than fifteen years, due to her irritable temperament and grief, the condition worsened. Only an area about three fingers wide below the heart was unaffected; the rest of the abdomen was hard as stone slabs, preventing sitting or lying down. Acupuncture and moxibustion had been applied repeatedly but were in vain. She respectfully invited Dairen (Zhang Congzheng) for consultation. Upon arrival, he diagnosed: "This is Feiqi. It originated on Wu-Ji days in late summer, located under the left hypochondrium, shaped like an inverted cup. If not cured for a long time, it causes malaria."
He employed the emetic method. At dawn (Wugeng), she passed yellow phlegm, pus, and fluid five or six times, experiencing pain in all areas where accumulation existed. Subsequently, Baizhu San (Atractylodes Macrocephala Powder) and Danggui San (Angelica Sinensis Powder), along with herbs to harmonize blood and meridians, were administered. Through such emetic and purgative treatments, repeated three or four times, she finally recovered.
The daughter of Envoy Cao from Bianliang, having reached adulthood, suffered from Xuejia (Blood Accumulation) for several years. Imperial Physician Yi Qixian treated her with blood-breaking medications without success. Yi Qixian stated, "Only the prescription from Zhang Dairen of Chenzhou can cure this." One day, Dai Cheng informed Dairen that he was traveling to Bianjing. Envoy Cao invited Dairen for treatment. Dairen said, "Residual heat from the Small Intestine has transferred to the Large Intestine, forming Fuji (Hidden Accumulation), resulting in hard nodules, sallow complexion, and amenorrhea." He then used the emetic-purgative method. A disease lasting several years showed efficacy within ten days, allowing the young woman to become betrothed. When Yi Qixian asked who treated her, Envoy Cao replied, "Zhang Dairen." Yi Qixian immediately sent someone to invite him.
A woman, since her youth, after crying bitterly and drinking ice water while drowsy, developed stagnation of fluids in the epigastrium, gradually leading to painful distension. Physicians all considered it cold accumulation and treated it with warming agents, forbidding cold food. Whenever she smelled tea, the illness would flare up internally, continuing for years. Moxibustion and burning needles created thousands of sores. Over ten years later, her urine became dark yellow, stool became constipated and obstructed, vision dimmed significantly, and fluid retention worsened, flowing into both hypochondria. This was known as Shuipi (Water Pleurisy) or Zhiyin (Branching Fluid Retention). Herba Kansui (Kansui Radix), Rhizoma Euphorbiae Lathyridis (Lathyrus Rhizome), Rhizoma Sparganii (Sparganium Rhizome), and Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome), among other attacking and grinding medicines, were all utilized. Her diet declined daily, while accumulation grew; extending upward to Jiutui (CV15), laterally to the hypochondria and below the navel. During attacks, palpation revealed fluid sounds; the epigastrium and abdomen were knotted and hard, intolerable to touch. Attacks occurred five to seven times monthly, sometimes nearly fatal. Disillusioned with various medicines, she suffered for over twenty years before seeking medication from Dairen. His pulse diagnosis revealed only the Cun (Inch) position sinking and slow, indicating phlegm in the chest. First, Gudi San (Melon Seed Powder) was used to induce vomiting of five to seven sheng of phlegm. Within a few days, another dou of phlegm and fluid was vomited. Several days later, several sheng were vomited again. In total, there were three rounds of emesis and three rounds of purgation, and sweating like water occurred three times. All accumulations were eliminated. She was then regulated with diuretic and damp-draining beverages, recovering significantly after more than a month.
