In the county of Luyi, a young man from a prominent family, aged twenty-three, had suffered from *gaolin* (Gao Lin, creamy urine) for three years. Local physicians were unable to cure him. He traveled to the capital and sought treatment everywhere, but most doctors diagnosed it as *xusun* (Xu Sun, deficiency consumption) and treated him with warming and drying tonics, as well as acupuncture and moxibustion, without any reduction in symptoms. Hearing that Dairen (Zhang Congzheng's pseudonym) was residing in Bianliang, he went to see him. Dairen said, "This is a disease caused by bewitchment or confusion, also known as *baiyin* (Bai Yin, white turbidity). It is actually due to 'yuanre' (Yuan Re, unjustified heat) in the lower abdomen, not a deficiency. It can be treated by inducing vomiting to drain the pathogen." At that time, it was summer, and the patient feared the harshness of this method, hesitating for three days before making a decision. A Buddhist monk said, "I suffer from a summerheat disease and recently felt headache." Dairen said, "Vomiting can also be used for you. I wish for you to undergo it with me; do not be afraid." Consequently, three sheng (a traditional unit of volume) of phlegm were vomited out, dark like iron sulfate juice, containing dead blood and yellow-green fluid. Subsequently, several bowel movements of accumulated filth were discharged, and soon after, he felt cured. When he first arrived, his face lacked color; after treatment, the next day his face looked flushed as if drunk. Dairen, fearing the long journey during the hot season, prescribed several formulas for him to take home for self-preparation.
Chang Zhongming suffered from alternating chills and fever, occasional coughing (one or two times), sallow complexion, weakness, aversion to food and drink, night sweats, and progressive emaciation. Various physicians treated him as a deficiency consumption case, using Ershisiwei Shaogan San (Twenty-Four-Ingredient Roasted Liver Powder), Lu Rong (Cervus Nippon Antler), and Niu Xi (Achyranthes Bidentata Root), tonifying him for two years. This resulted in excessive phlegm in the mouth and further deficiency in the lower body. Dairen diagnosed it as: "Excess in the upper jiao." First, he used an emetic agent to expel two to three sheng of phlegm. Then, he administered Chaihu Yinzi (Bupleurum Decoction) to descend fire and benefit water. Within a little over a month, he recovered. What is this syndrome named? In the *Neijing* (Classic of Internal Medicine), it is called "Eryang Bing" (Disease of the Two Yangs). Diseases of the Eryang originate from the heart and spleen, often associated with unspoken distress. If the heart is affected, blood flow stagnates, leading to amenorrhea in women; if the spleen is affected, food transformation fails, leading to scanty essence in men. These two syndromes have different names but share the same essence. Zhongming's illness belongs to the category of failed food transformation.
The child of the Huang family had a red and swollen face with eyes unable to open. Dairen used light needle pricking and bloodletting. Except for the corners of the eyes, dozens of needles were inserted randomly, and after bleeding three times, he was cured. Many people are unwilling to follow this method; if one insists on curing the disease, one cannot be overly cautious or protective.
A monk from Danxia Mountain suffered from headache and usually stayed in a dark room, afraid to see light. His head was hot and painful; he wrapped cloth around his head and placed ice inside, changing it several times a day, yet the heat could not be alleviated. Physicians did not recognize the syndrome. He sought an audience with Dairen. Dairen said, "This is due to accumulated heat in the Three Yang meridians." Therefore, charcoal fires were placed in a warm room, and sweating, vomiting, and purging methods were applied simultaneously. After seven days, he was cured. The monk said to his attendant, "This is the work of immortals."
