(Tian Gua Man Long Tou, Momordicae Cochinchinensis Caulis et Folium
When a child presents with fever, vomiting and diarrhea, abdominal distension, and refusal to nurse, Niuhuang Tongge Wan (Calculus Bovis Throat-Opening Pill) should be administered urgently. Recovery is expected after four or five bowel movements.
For children suffering from cough with excessive phlegm due to wind-heat, Fangfeng Tongsheng San (Siler and Gardenia Powder) with added Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) should be decocted with ample water and administered in small, frequent doses. Recovery typically occurs within three to five days.
In cases of persistent watery diarrhea in children, Wu Ling San (Five-Ling Powder) and Yi Yuan San (Benefit-Origin Powder) should be taken in equal proportions. The mixture should be taken with fresh water, one or two qian per dose, at any time without restriction.
For skin conditions such as sores, scabies, and wind-xuan (lichenification/eczema) in children, Xionghuang San (Realgar Powder) mixed with a small amount of Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas) can be applied topically with oil. If sores or xuan are present on the face, rubbing the medicine should be avoided to prevent it from entering the eyes and causing damage to vision.
Chronic sweet sores (a type of skin infection, commonly known as "fragrant sores") in children that do not heal for a long time are often called "xiang chuang" (fragrant sores). These typically appear on the face and in front of both ears. One method involves having the mother chew white rice in her mouth until it forms a paste, which is then applied to the affected area before bedtime. Healing usually occurs within three to five applications. Both the child and the nursing mother must avoid foods that stir wind and generate heat, such as chicken, pork, fish, rabbit, alcohol, and vinegar. This method can also be used to treat sweet sores on the fingers.
White alopecia capitis (tinea capitis, commonly known as "chicken manure baldness") in children can be treated using the head and vine of Momordica cochinchinensis (Tiangua Man Longtou). An unspecified amount should be soaked in river water overnight, then decocted in a clay pot to extract a very bitter juice. After filtering out the vines, the liquid should be slowly reduced over low heat until it resembles thin syrup, and stored in a porcelain container. First, shave the hair and remove all crusts until dead blood is expelled. Wash the area clean with river water. Then, mix one cup of the prepared gourd vine ointment with two qian of Banxia powder, one tablespoon of fresh ginger juice, and one dog gallbladder. Apply this mixture; healing is typically achieved within one or two applications. Strictly avoid foods that stir wind and generate heat, such as chicken, pork, fish, and rabbit.
For malaria that has persisted for years, the "Cursed Fruit Method" can be employed. "Fruits" refer to peaches, apricots, jujubes, pears, and chestnuts. The incantation is as follows:
"I come from the southeast,
Meeting a pool of water on the way.
In the water lies a dragon,
With nine heads and eighteen tails.
I ask what it eats,
It only eats the malaria ghost."
Recite the incantation once and blow onto the fruit. Repeat this seven times, blowing seven times in total. Have the patient stand facing east at dawn, before the roosters and dogs make noise. After eating the fruit, the patient should sleep in a clean room. Avoid fruits, vegetables, meat, and hot-natured foods. This method cures eight or nine out of ten cases and can save lives where no medicine is available.
