It is stated: Human life exists by bearing Yin and embracing Yang. Humans are generated from a single Qi, and the Dao resides within this Qi. Externally, the Eight Evils (Eight Pathogenic Factors) agitate each other; internally, emotions of joy and anger invade one another. When the True Qi (Vital Energy) becomes weak inside, Wind Evil (Pathogenic Wind) attacks. Wind injuring the body may manifest as alternating chills and fever, pain, hemiplegia (partial paralysis), or muscle spasms and contractures; its manifestations vary. Wind is characterized by its ability to move swiftly and change frequently. Thus, Wind is regarded as the beginning of all diseases and the leader of myriad diseases. Generally, when internal flow is obstructed and external release is blocked, this is called disease arising from chaos. Some present with aphonia and mental confusion, or facial deviation of the mouth and eyes; these can be treated with San Sheng San (Three Holy Decoction) via emesis. For those unconscious or with locked jaws, unable to swallow porridge or fluids, decocted San Sheng San should be instilled into the nose; once phlegm and saliva are vomited out, the mouth will naturally open. Subsequently, Wu You San (Worry-Free Powder), Tong Jie Wan (Unblocking Pill), Fang Feng Tong Sheng San (Saposhnikovia-Perilla Decoction for Unblocking the Exterior and Interior), Liang Ge San (Cooling the Diaphragm Powder), Ren Shen Ban Xia Wan (Ginseng and Pinellia Pill), Gui Ling Gan Lu San (Cassia Seed and Polyporus Decoction), and Xiao Feng San (Wind-Expelling Powder) should be administered in sequence to clear heat, remove dampness, moisten dryness, and nourish fluids. One must strictly avoid foods that stir wind and induce phlegm, such as chicken, pork, fish, rabbit, greasy foods, wine, vinegar, and buckwheat.
Generally, vertigo due to Head Wind, numbness and paralysis of the hands and feet, epigastric pain, sourness and fullness in the heart region with audible sounds upon palpation, are all caused by Wind. The combination of Wind, Cold, and Dampness pathogens results in Bi Syndrome (Obstruction Syndrome). When pathogenic factors linger in the Upper Jiao (Upper Burner), it is called Fluid Retention (Stagnant Fluid); this can be treated with Du Sheng San (Single Holy Decoction) via emesis. After vomiting, administer acrid-cool herbs to clear the upper burner, such as Tong Sheng San added with the acridity of Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma). Zhang Zhongjing stated: This is caused by Phlegm knotting in the chest.
Generally, during an attack of Wind Epilepsy, symptoms include neck stiffness, fixed gaze, and loss of consciousness, indicating Heat in the Liver Channel. If teeth grinding occurs, first use Ting Li Ku Jiu Tang (Descurainia Vinegar Decoction) for emesis. After vomiting, administer Xie Qing Wan (Draining Green Pill) to purge downward, followed by Jia Jian Tong Sheng San (Modified Unblocking Decoction). For prominent teeth-grinding symptoms, Dao Chi San (Guide Out Red Powder) cures the condition. If the disease flares up, use Qian Fen (Calomel), Bai Fan (Alumen), Meng Shi (Limonite), and Dai Zhe Shi (Hematitum), taken with rice water after the episode subsides. The Classics state: Use heavy agents to anchor it.
The condition commonly known as "Lei Tou Lan Gan" (Thunder-Head Lethargy) is a vulgar misnomer. Headache and dizziness resulting from bathing hair constitute Shou Feng (Head Wind). This arises because pathogenic wind causes intense heat in the chest, transforming into Phlegm, driven by Wind. Cha Tiao San (Tea-Regulating Powder) can be used for emesis; after vomiting, Cang Yong Wan (Hidden Use Pill) purges downward, followed by Wu Jing Wan (Evodia and Saposhnikovia Pill). In cases of Thunder-Head Wind, there are often red swellings and nodules on the upper head, or facial heat without sweat. The Classics state: For Fire Stagnation, disperse it, guide it, and drain it. Acupuncture bleeding can cure it. The *Ling Shu* states: Those who have lost blood should not undergo sweating; those who have sweated profusely should not undergo bloodletting. Blood, is it not precious! For the elderly, treat with Liang Ge Jie Du (Cooling Diaphragm Detoxification) and Xiao Feng San Re (Wind-Expelling Heat-Clearing) methods. For the young and strong, use Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) and Qian Niu (Pharbitidis Semen) to purge accumulated heat, promoting Qi and Blood circulation to resolve stagnation and achieve recovery.
When eyes swell and fail to heal for years, vulgarly attributed to Head Wind pouring into the eyes, accompanied by headache, is this not Head Wind? This indicates excessive Heat in the Foot Jueyin Liver Channel and Hand Shaoyin Heart Channel, combined with excessive Heat in all five Zang organs. First use Tong Jie Wan to unblock urination and defecation, then administer Da Huang Yue Tao Yin Zi (Rhubarb and Peach Drink). For treating Liver Heat, Qiang Huo Jue Ming San (Notopterygium and Cassia Powder) is highly effective.
Eye tearing, vulgarly called "Cold Tears," is incorrect. The *Nei Jing* states: Inability to control Liver fluid indicates severe Heat steaming the Liver. Extreme Heat generates Wind; Wind rushes outward, Fire erupts inward; Wind and Heat struggle, causing profuse tearing. Treating both interior and exterior can cure it. For external treatment, grind one Be Mu (Fritillariae Bulbus, white and fine) with seven Hu Jiao (Piperis Longi Fructus) finely, avoiding copper and iron, and apply before sleep. For internal treatment, use Wind-expelling and Heat-clearing formulas like Dang Gui Yin Zi (Angelica Decoction). For extreme Yang Heat causing unbearable eye pain, use Si Wu Tang (Four Substance Decoction) added with Han Fang Ji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix) and Cao Long Dan (Gentianae Radix), taking 50-70 Shen Xiong Wan (Shenxiong Pill) with water; recovery follows after three to five bowel movements.
Phlegm disorders manifest in various ways, generally categorized into five types: Wind Phlegm, Heat Phlegm, Damp Phlegm, Wine Phlegm, and Food Phlegm. When Phlegm accumulates above the diaphragm, it clouds the head and eyes, causing thick nasal discharge and saliva, coughing, wheezing, chest fullness, or tidal fevers. Du Sheng San can be used for emesis, followed by alternating administration of Jia Jian Yin Zi (Modified Drink) or Shu Feng Wan (Wind-Dispersing Pill). The *Nei Jing* explains this as the principle of draining dampness and moistening dryness.
In warm diseases contracted from Wind exposure, the pathogen remains in the Exterior for the first three days. Symptoms include stiff neck and headache, fever with aversion to wind and cold, with or without sweat, and lower back pain preventing bending or stretching. Yi Yuan San (Benefiting Origin Powder) and Tong Sheng San can be mixed and taken together, named "Shuang Jie San" (Double Release Decoction). Boil one large bowl of water with over ten slices of Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), five to seven stalks of Cong Bai (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus with roots), and a handful of Dou Chi (Sojae Preparata) for three to five boils. Strain, drink most of it; after a while, induce vomiting by probing the throat with a hairpin to expel phlegm and saliva; do not rinse the mouth. Then drink the remainder. If no sweat occurs, administer Cong Cu La Tang (Acidic Vinegar Soup) again. Cover with blankets until sweat appears, then recover. The *Su Wen: Qi Jiao Bian Da Lun* states: When Fire Qi is excessive, summer heat prevails, damaging Lung Metal, corresponding to the planet Mars. The disease involves Heat stagnation; acrid-cool agents are infallible. In turbulent times, acrid-cool herbs resolve Fire toxicity. In peaceful times, when people are calm, acrid-warm agents like Sheng Ma Ge Gen Tang (Ephedra and Kudzu Decoction) or Bai Du San (White Poria Powder) cause no harm. Adding Cong Bai, salt, and Dou Chi promotes upward expulsion and exterior release. The *Nei Jing* states: Disperse mild pathogens. Dispersion means uplifting. After emesis and sweating, careful nursing is required; avoid relapse triggers for ten days, otherwise the disease returns.
For typhoid epidemics, if medicines are unavailable, boil a large bowl of sour pickle juice for three to five boils, remove vegetables, and drink. After a short while, induce vomiting by probing the throat with a hairpin; repeat three times. Then administer Cong Cu Tang (Scallion Vinegar Soup) and cover with blankets until sweat appears and recovery ensues. The *Nei Jing* states: Sour and bitter agents induce vomiting and purging, belonging to Yin. On the third day of Shang Han (Cold Damage), with headache and fever indicating pathology in the upper body, emesis is appropriate, followed by nourishment with light congee.
Another method: Sniff Feng Huang Tai San (Phoenix Terrace Powder) into the nose to induce twenty to thirty sneezes. Perform this in a warm room. After sneezing, take Jiang Shui Zhou (Fermented Rice Water Porridge) and cover with blankets until sweat appears and recovery ensues. Sneezing therapy is applied similarly to emesis.
A manual therapy method (Daoyin): Sit cross-legged, interlace fingers, and grasp the Feng Chi (GB20) and Feng Fu (GV16) acupoints at the back of the head, the gates of Wind. Lean forward until touching the ground, repeating this motion one hundred and twenty times. Immediately drink acid vinegar white soup; sweat resolves the condition.
For men, women, and children suffering from numbness and paralysis of limbs and insensibility of muscles due to the mixture of Wind, Cold, and Dampness causing Bi Syndrome: First use Huang Qin Shao Yao Tang (Scutellaria and Peony Decoction) for emesis. After vomiting, use Tong Jie Wan to unblock meridians and purge downward. After purging, use acrid-sweet agents to induce sweating. Following sweating and purging, use Dang Gui Qing Liang Yin Zi (Angelica Cooling Drink), along with Wu Jing Wan and Chu Shi Dan (Dampness-Removing Pill), harmonizing blood and promoting meridian circulation to cure the disease.
Phlegm disorders present with more symptoms than previously discussed, primarily manifesting as five types: Wind Phlegm, Heat Phlegm, Damp Phlegm, Wine Phlegm, and Food Phlegm. When Phlegm accumulates in the mouth and Toxic Heat from the Upper Jiao steams the head (the meeting point of all Yang channels), patients experience heavy head, dry eyes, thick sputum, coughing, wheezing, and intermittent chills and fever. Chi Xiao Dou Tang (Red Bean Decoction) induces emesis; subsequently, treat according to specific patterns. Administer Xiao Feng Qu Re (Wind-Expelling Heat-Clearing) agents. To guide dampness and transform phlegm, use Tong Sheng San added with Ban Xia and Qi-guiding herbs. For new-onset Wind Phlegm due to cold exposure and cold drinks, Heat Phlegm due to Fire suppressing Metal, or Damp Phlegm due to stagnant fluids, administer Jia Jian Lian Qiao Yin Zi (Modified Forsythia Drink), Chu Shi Dan, or Wu You San. Wine Phlegm is treated with Jie Du San Sheng Wan (Detoxifying Three Holy Pill). Food Phlegm is treated with Han Fang Ji Wan (Stephania Pill) selected with Dan Sha (Cinnabar). Adhering to these methods yields miraculous effects.
