Wind-dampness injury causing body heat, restlessness, a dry and black tongue coating, coma with delirium, faint macules and rashes, a rapid and intermittent pulse; this indicates heat sinking into the Blood level. It is appropriate to use Xijiao Dihuang Tang (Rhino Horn and Rehmannia Decoction) added with Yuan Shen Xin (Heart of Scrophulariae Radix), Lian Qiao Xin (Heart of Forsythiae Fructus), Xian Shi Hu (Fresh Dendrobii Officinalis Herba), Xian Chang Pu (Fresh Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma), Ren Zhong Huang (Human Feces Powder), Qing Zhu Ye (Green Bamboo Leaf), and Zhibao Dan (Precious Treasure Pill) and other ingredients, to cool the blood and resolve macules.
The preceding clause discusses Qi and Blood simultaneous burning (Qi and Blood levels simultaneously affected by intense heat); this clause describes heat sinking into the Blood, causing a dry and black tongue. The Heart governs the Blood; Heart heat causes delirium, Blood heat causes macules to appear, and extreme heat causes an urgent pulse. Whenever a pulse appears rapid and intermittent, the heat is already at its peak. *Mai Jing* (Pulse Classic) states that if it gradually recedes, there is life; if it gradually advances, there is death. Without relying on Xijiao Dihuang Tang to cool the blood, combined with Lian Qiao and Yuan Shen to clear heat, Shi Hu and Ren Zhong Huang to resolve macules, Chang Pu and Zhu Ye to clear the Heart, and concurrently using Zhibao Dan for aromatic transformation of turbidity, it is feared that quick efficacy will be difficult to achieve, yet the condition is already perilous.
Wind-dampness injury causing aversion to cold and fever, heavy and painful limbs, fullness and oppression in the chest and diaphragm, or vomiting or diarrhea, a floating and moderate pulse; this indicates dampness injuring both the exterior and interior. It is appropriate to use Xing Ren (Apricot Seed), Hou Po (Magnolia Bark), Ju Hong (Tangerine Peel), Xiang Ru (Elsholtzia Herb), Bo He (Mint Herb), Huo Xiang (Patchouli Herb), Dou Juan (Soybean Sprout), Ze Xie (Alisma Rhizome), Tong Cao (Tetrapanacis Medulla) and other ingredients, to clear both the exterior and interior.
Whenever dampness injures the exterior, there is aversion to cold and fever, heaviness and pain in the body; when it injures the interior, there is nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, and epigastric fullness and oppression. When the pulse appears floating and moderate, it indicates disease in both the exterior and interior. Therefore, it is appropriate to use Xiang Ru and Bo He to vent the exterior, Ju Hong and Hou Po to warm the middle, Xing Ren and Huo Xiang to benefit the Upper Jiao, and Dou Juan and Ze Xie to drain the Lower Jiao, so that the pathogens of the three Jiaos and both exterior and interior are separated and cleared together, then the damp pathogen will retreat without being attacked.
Wind-dampness injury causing aversion to cold and slight fever, white tongue coating without thirst, soreness and discomfort in the limbs and joints, fullness and oppression in the chest and epigastrium, a slow and small pulse; this indicates Yin-dampness injuring the interior. It is appropriate to use Huoxiang Zhengqi San (Agaricus and Magnolia Powder) added with Dou Juan and Tong Cao, to warm the Spleen and promote dampness drainage.
This clause describes Yin-dampness damaging Yang, which must occur due to excessive fatigue, leading to weak Qi and declining Yang, allowing seasonal dampness to take advantage. At the onset, although there is aversion to cold, there is not much fever, and the tongue is white without thirst. Dampness obstructing the Middle Jiao spreads up and down, hence chest and epigastric discomfort and limb joint soreness appear together. Therefore, Huo Xiang, Hou Po, Chen Pi (Aged Tangerine Peel), and Fu Ling (Poria) from Zhengqi San are used to warm Spleen Yang, Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome), Shen Qu (Medicated Leaven), Zi Su Ye (Perilla Leaf), and Ban Xia (Pinellia Tuber) are used to promote Spleen Qi circulation, added with Dou Juan and Tong Cao to regulate dampness, so that Spleen Yang can transform, the three Jiaos can flow smoothly, and then the heavy and turbid pathogens can all be transformed thereby.
